If you've known me for a while on here, you know that I gripe about certain artists that I don't like, don't understand, or wonder how they became so gosh-darn popular. Well as a writing project to myself, and to maybe see if I've matured in the last ~6 years on here, I'm being self-righteous and making a thread for me to do so. And I invite you to join and present hot takes, either on my takes or about artists yourself that fall into that criteria. I'm gonna try to complete a discography every two weeks, which is ambitious but should also be educational. Feel free to jump in with your own discographies, or suggest stuff I should be listening to as a reminder of stuff I've said I've hated in the past. Will it be fun? Maybe! Will it be entertaining? Maybe! Will we get Scoots to listen to The National? Probably not! Xam, feel free to move this to board projects if you think that's better served there. Anyway, discographies on the docket starting, uh, today! BjorkMuse Fiona Apple Judas Priest T Rex Ween Arctic Monkeys Primus (regretfully encouraged by claypoolfan) And probably some more! Challenge yourself! Or don't!

I guess I could do this for The National, but I really don't want to ruin my entire day.

BjorkWhy does Tweet not like Bjork?
When I first joined up on here someone, I don't remember who, was hyping Bjork nonstop and I, of course, thought this person was cool and should emulate them. So I took their advice and tried Homogenic and, due to a combination of being 16 and thinking I know everything as well as wanting to be edgy, absolutely panned it. Because my takes always matter. I thought she sounded...whiny, for lack of a better word. And a few various singles here and there didn't do anything either. On top of that, she found a way to take up space on my precious Pitchfork 2013 lineup, which didn't even matter ultimately because A. Her set got washed out and B. I went and saw Pearl Jam that night anyway. And from there, it's been more a period of active avoidance rather than actual hate and not wanting to say mean things on the Internet (which 16 year old me would also be shocked by) as the board has moved toward a more civil, inclusive discussion. Additionally, her spotify albums page is an absolute mess of B sides and live performances that I have to use wikipedia to figure out which albums are actually albums. How Spotify hasn't developed a better algorithm to mark these differences is absolutely beyond me. Also also, in a mixup that I couldn't even begin to explain if I tried, I thought Bjork and Yoko Ono were the same person for a few years in high school. I didn't like Yoko either (she broke up the Beatles amirite??), but I've sense come around a bit on that since this amazing work of art came out. Maybe I'll add her music to my list for later on. Why try now?For one, it is pretty fuckin dumb to ignore her influence at this point. Did you know that she is one of 3 women to headline Coachella? And that it took 10 years after she headlined for another one to do it? That's both insane and a testament to her presence. Also, I was a big fan of how she called out the crowd and media coverage at Day for Night for ripping into her set. I didn't see it for obvious reasons, but I also don't see why she got panned for performing behind a bush while Aphex Twin performed behind a giant set of speakers. Also, look at this: I've come across this a couple of times at record stores and would've bought it for the art alone if I just collected records for the sake of collecting them. Here are the albums:Debut (93)Post (95)Homogenic (97) Vespertine (01) Medulla (04) Volta (07) Biophilla (11) Vulnicura (15) Utopia (17) Apparently she had an album out in 1977 as well, but it's not on spotify which means I'm going to skip it. I am assuming some of these albums are titled in Icelandic, which make them fun to look at but hard for me to pronounce. Anyway, on a journey I will go over these next two weeks

If you've never listened to The Sugarcubes' "Life's Too Good" you should dip your feet in there as a primer, whether or not you take it as seriously as your listen through her solo catalog.
but that's just my opinion

I'm not the biggest Bjork fan, but have tried (recently) a few of her albums for the 2000s list compilation. I really enjoyed Vespertine and Medulla, but have had a hard time getting into much else.

Debut notes:
Human Behavior is a good song. Crying is a great song: I actually played this twice in a row before moving on. I was not expecting this sort of sound right off the bat but I'm pretty into it already. Why didn't whoever that cool person was on here have me start with this album?
I can tell "Venus as a Boy" is a very pretty song but unfortunately because of how my brain works it also means it's making me yawn a bit. And then it switches to "More to Life than This" which makes me wanna go hit the club. All the dips and fades and cuts are also exciting, but also still making me yawn. I should sleep more, it's only 3 in the afternoon.
From "Like Someone in Love" onward, this hits like a Portishead album. It's a weird contrast between the front half which, again, feels like a club type stretch, and then going to this which is a more jazzy, "I just hit a [redacted] in my friend's basement apartment" feel. And honestly, my mood is just in the right place in this in particular moment for me to be digging it a lot more than I probably would otherwise.
I added "Crying" and "Come to Me" onto my big playlist.
3.5 tweets out of 5.

seeing the sugarcubes open for u2 in '92 (along with public enemy) was fantastic. seeing bjork at acl in '07 was underwhelming.

Her music videos and visuals per album are really an integral part of her creative career and take her music to another level. There's few artists I'd say that about. #fangirlalert Enjoy! hope your life is changed forever

In fairness this is going to be all over the place in terms of when I'm listening, moments, etc. It also doesn't help when you're plugging away at a desktop for 5 hours before you start.

I'm not much of a Bjork fan, but I was damn impressed with her voice at Pitchfork Fest in 2013.
