Why do they keep getting Red Hot Chili Peppers? I think if you book them 5x the sixth show is free.

every year the booking guy does an interview or an AMA over the winter and says they made out of "left field bookings" or some other term indicating that they went in a different direction. and for the people who go to this every year, is there any truth to that?
i usually go to an aftershow or two, but haven't been to the fest in ten years now. it seems like every year is pretty similar, even stealing a couple acts that might seem more suited at p4k or riot fest.

"left field bookings" lends itself to some poetic license, but elevating TXT and Karol G to headliner spots could be considered left field. The New Jeans booking, while not my cup of tea, could also be considered something out of the ordinary

I'm always amazed at the massive block of names I've never heard of in the bottom half of this poster. And I still feel relatively plugged into things, ya know? I guess there's always more nieces and nephews of BMI and C3 executives to start up bands every year.

Everyone on the lineup is a relative, industry plant, or algorithm creation.

I did not have Band-Maid on my bingo card; that should be a lot of fun.
Not a terrible lineup, I think. The headliners are solid. Plus, I get to see Pusha T, Rina Sawayama, Men I Trust, Alex G, Knocked Loose, Magdalena Bay and Sudan Archives for the first times.
Maggie Rogers, Carly Rae Jepsen, Joey Bada$$ and Sincere Engineer are always fun.
But, yeah, there's a lot in the bottom half I don't know.

Also, if this lineup feels familiar, it's because 3/8 headliners were also sub/headliners in 2016.

This newjeans show is apparently a big deal in K-Pop world. I haven't Odezea and 1975 on many festival lineups this year so I guess that's a pull in and of itself. I guess the EDM crowd is very excited for this too based on reddit comments. Obviously your milage may vary but at least it has a personality.

But yea - this lineup blows. Like, it’s the same folks at the top of every other US lineup this year? Not entirely sure what the unique draw of this group of acts would be. And look, I know that much of this isn’t for me anymore, but it just seems very tired. While she's already toured this album extensively, this is technically Billie's only US date this year (as of right now). RHCP are playing Bottlerock and Hangout, but none of the other marquee US fests. The 1975 are coming off an instant sell out tour last year, and this will be their first US festival of the cycle (though OSL is also on the docket). Lana hasn't announced a larger US tour (yet) and I don't think Karol G has any other shows booked. Kendrick is doing a ton of festivals this year, but was way overdue for Lolla date (hasn't been back since Good Kid, Maad City). Odesza is a lazy booking, but will do well for them and is at least more interesting than the typical DJ set. I don't get rebooking TXT again at all, but maybe they had another target headliner that fell through and they felt bad about sticking them at Perry's last year. The unfortunate truth is that there just aren't enough marquee acts left that are actively touring right now and willing to take festival bookings in a major market like Chicago. The big misses here seem to be Paramore and Skrillex but I could see Skrillex having a large scale tour planned for himself and Riot Fest upping the ante enough to pry Paramore away (since they seemed destined to be a North headliner) -- but neither of those would fundamentally shift the general structure of this line-up. Compared to other festivals this year, I think the topline is pretty stellar. The line-up beyond that is much more open to debate.

Compared to other festivals this year, I think the topline is pretty stellar. The line-up beyond that is much more open to debate. Honestly the two names that stick out to me as super boring are RHCP and Tomorrow x Together. The latter solely because they literally played last year, but RHCP has toured extensively last year and is touring extensively this year, and are pretty regularly booked at the majors even if most of them managed to avoid it this year. I mean they did a stadium date in Chicago last year too, so it's not like there wasn't a chance to see them. I think you kind of undersell how absolutely boring that booking is, I feel like the initial reaction here would be more positive with nearly any other equivalent name on there in that spot that doesn't play these fests every 2-3 years. Was there someone better even available to book? Honestly not sure, maybe not, but even if the lameness of that is out of Lolla's control that doesn't make it any less lame. or maybe I'm just a hater with rhcp
