On first glance, the only acts making me go "oooh" are Unwound, and the JG Thirwell + Ensemble. But I'd like to see Herbie Hancock, Adrienne Lecker, Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog, Horse Lords, etc. Laurie Anderson was disappointing the one time I saw her - more talk than music - but her with a band here sounds better. Armand Hammer and claire rousay I've seen before, and both were good.
Lots more to check out the next six months...

If so, that instantly jumps up from "A set I def wanna see" to "#2 priority for the entire weekend"

Also if anyone wants to rec me an Unwound album to start with, I'd be grateful. Never actually given them a shake, but always hear people talking good things about them.

I'm very interested in this fest, specially after all the write-ups this past year, but admittedly there's not a ton of names I know, which is kind of par for the course. Any names that have you really excited? I'll probably pick a few random names to check out in deciding on attending or not You should do it! I'll go thru my list and post some names that popped out to me later this morning Forgot about this yesterday - here's the top acts that I'm excited for: -- Herbie Hancock (duh) -- Rhiannon Giddens (never seen her before, somehow) -- Laurie Anderson (esp. if Big Science material included) -- Shabaka Hutchings (excited for whatever he does next) -- Molly Tuttle (I assume ur familiar, as a BMFS-head) -- Beth Orton (terrific 2022 record, had to cancel last year) -- Dave Holland Quartet (70s free/fusion legend - played w/ Miles on A Silent Way - check out Conference of the Birds) -- Kassa Overall (killer 2023 jazz / hip-hop fusion record) -- Bitchin Bajas (always amazing) Also excited to check out these acts based on hype: -- Unwound -- Horse Lords -- Claire Rousay -- Jlin -- Fred Frith (of 60s UK psych-folk weirdo-outfit Henry Cow) And there's a lot of folks here that I've seen before but are incredible performers: -- Adrianne Lenker (duh) -- Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog -- Christian McBride (one of the best Big Ears 2023 sets) -- Julian Lage (his live guitar playing feels otherworldly good) -- James Brandon Lewis (pound-for-pound best sax player in the game rn) -- Yasmin Williams (see write-up for Lage, Julian) -- Cyro Baptista (Brazilian percussionist / inventor of various zany instruments - saw him at a benefit last year and LOVED it) Etc. etc. - this covers like half of my list. They booked a solid amount of alt-hip-hop this year, which I'm excited to check out (Mavi, Armand Hammer, Billy Woods, FlySiifu, Aja Monet, Roc Marciano, and - of course - Digable Planets). And, of course, some indie-adjacent folk/rock stuff (Kurt Vile, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Joanna Sternberg, Joan Shelley, Sam Amidon). There should be some adds later on too. Usually they save a big name or two for that. In 2022, IIRC, Patti Smith was one of those adds. Last year I think the Sun Ra Arkestra was too, amongst about 10-20 others. Edit: Oh, and John Paul Jones, of course! Idk what the hell he's gonna do. His artist photo is him at a piano and it seems he's been doing improvisational piano / contemp. classical stuff lately. Idk if that's gonna be the Set of the Weekend, but it'll be cool to check into.

The ones I would recommend not on monastary's list: Colin Stetson of course (I think most here have seen him, always fascinating) Colleen - Good moog based soundscape type artist Armand Hammer, billy woods and Mavi are all good rap options Hurray for the Riff Raff were pretty enjoyable at Primavera last year, hopefully they will have something new to play by this fest

monastery, I've resisted til this moment doing this, but whatever.
in the tk: hancock 2x, giddens as part of carolina chocolate drops at fitzgeralds in berwyn, lenker as part of big thief, anderson 2x, jones w/ d galas, threadgill, at least once, maybe 3x, planets 2x, mehldau, ribot, mcbride, halvorson, tuttle, frith, moran, vile, orton, dj heather, braxton, medeski, burnside, stetson, baptista with beat the donkey band, holland quintet, faun fables, riff raff, thirlwell when he was wiseblood, melford (I think, not sure), reid quartet, horvitz. I may or may not have seen charles lloyd at one of the chicago jazz festivals.
my number one would be elliot sharp, who I'm not sure ever toured the US outside of new york.

Aoife O’Donovan is alright. Folky. I liked the collab she did with Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz (I’m with Her). She used to live in my neighborhood (maybe still does). Worth checking out if y’all don’t have conflicts when she is performing.

This probably isn’t the year I go, but that is a good lineup. Anyone who doesn’t see Unwound is silly

They added some more today: I've been curious about Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, I'd like to see him. The Evan Lurie Quintet also sounds interesting, I read his brother's autobiography earlier this year.

Yea I'm satisfied with these. Batiste is kind of a dud headliner, IMO, but whatever. BPB should be great, and Leyla McCalla / Kristin Hersh (!) / Laraaji / Jana Horn are awesome adds. Slauson Malone put on one of the most unhinged sets I've ever seen, opening for Helado Negro last year. And the Medeski / Russo / Ribot combo is so Big Ears coded it almost seems like satire.

Herbie posted some tour dates which indicate he's playing Saturday night. Which is great for me, because I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to do Sunday this year.

Big Ears has been rolling out their daily lineups on their corresponding days this week (idk why, it's kinda dumb). But their Thurs/Fri splits are out now. Friday is absurd - I'm at 25 artists I'd like to see that day alone.

Some new adds this morning, including Bar Italia, Amythyst Kiah, and my college buddy / guitar wunderkind Eli Winter. Psyched to see him get booked, even tho it's on Sunday, when I'll prolly have to leave early.

There hasn't been any announcement about shows at the Pilot Light, I wonder if they will be hosting any this year? Usually they're out before the schedule drops.

Andre 3000 and his new group announced a residency during Big Ears, he's going to do several separately-ticketed shows throughout the weekend. bigearsfestival.org/andre-3000/ Also, the day-by-day schedule dropped. Saturday night is conflictapalooza for me.

Gonna dig thru the schedule later this morning - will report back with my findings lmao

Yeah I'm listening to new blue sun now and it's really not bad but I feel like Big Ears is the one festival where I'd assume you can basically see the same thing but better already at the festival.

Fuck. I was prepared a bit thanks to that spreadsheet leak, but still. What a bloodbath. Really frustrating as always how they have lots of overlap between sets. Herbie is my #1 priority, but I may leave a bit early to go see Bonnie Prince Billy? Shit like that. Most obvious big conflict is that Dave Holland / Horse Lords / Colin Stetson / Beth Orton / Digable Planets mess on Saturday. Happily, I already got a ticket to see Horse Lords in NYC on the 19th, and Beth is coming to a tiny 50-70 capacity bar in my neighborhood on the 16th for some reason. Got a ticket for that last night cuz it'll obvs sell out.
Still up in the air about 3k. Like, yeah the album was solid, but it's not the most exciting music. But there's so many chances to see him, it almost seems silly not to make it happen as long as the surcharge isn't insane.
Set that I'm most bummed to probably be missing is actually Myriam Gendron. She's such a fantastic folksinger, it's a shame they put her in the smallest venue right during Laurie Anderson's headlining set.

Biggest miss of the festival: Booking Jlin at the fuckin' church venue? Full of pews? Lame.
Biggest hit of the festival: That back-to-back electronic night at Mill & Mine. Carl Craig until 2am is gonna rule.

Tightest jam of the fest: Having to pick my wife up at the Knoxville airport on Sunday for our hiking trip. She's scheduled to arrive at 6:30, but I think I can make like the first 30-40 mins of that 5:45pm Thurston Moore / John Paul Jones set if I haul ass over the airport?

I really disliked that civic auditorium room feel like they booked more stuff in there this year that I would be interested in which is a bummer.

I really disliked that civic auditorium room feel like they booked more stuff in there this year that I would be interested in which is a bummer. Agreed. That place sucks. Waaay too far removed from the rest of the fest venues. I have a block where I’d go Civic > Mill&Mine > Civic and that’s nearly 45-50 minutes of walking.
