I think I will kick the project off going into Memorial Day weekend. Ballots open in late July. Rollout going into Labor Day weekend. Easy peasy right? I'll let you know when I update this first post with more info Starting after the Memorial Day holiday I will post (broken down by year) a list of albums per year that might be of note. We will talk about them, possibly some other albums, we will possibly discuss Joe Biden's senate record at the time (unlikely!). Somewhat Comprehensive lists of albums by year (note- these links do not work on mobile for some reason) 1970197119721973 197419751976197719781979

I tried to end that post with a pick for #1 but I cannot do that. Instead, here's a list of artists in my vinyl record collection (which I am extremely proud of) with releases in the era of time considered the 1970s.
Grateful Dead Black Sabbath Neil Young Credence Clearwater REvival The Kinks Frank Sinatra Joni Mitchell Dolly Parton The Rolling Stones Pink Floyd Can Sly & The Family Stone Van Morrisson Led Zeppelin Marvin Gaye Steely Dan Curtis Mayfield David Bowie Wings Lou Reed Tom Waits The Who John Prine Bob Dylan The Band Tina Turner Gil! Scott! Heron! Patti Smith Thin Lizzy Brian Eno Lynyrd Skynyrd (The) Ramones Gerry Rafferty Dire Straits Warren Zevon Townes Van Zandt Talking Heads Willie Nelson The Police

We will talk about them, possibly some other albums, we will possibly discuss Joe Biden's senate record at the time (unlikely!). We will jog memories and talk about albums and possibly talk about Jimmy Carter's death in real time. I am drunk. What can we do
Should I include live albums in this list y/n

This is one of my favorite live albums of the 70's. Also, this might qualify as a "Frampton Comes Alive" level album. I think this would qualify.

Damn, I thought I hallucinated this thread a few weeks ago but forgot to come back to it. Will spend some time this week coming up with my Big List.
I vote yes to live albums provided they were actually recorded & released in the 70s. I.e. Europe '72 counts, but the Veneta Sunshine Daydream release does not.

why would we include live albums

I personally don’t like including live records on my lists but Budokan and Comes Alive! are huge for the ‘70s. I guess through a certain lens Jackson Browne’s Running on Empty is a live album (and that one will undoubtedly be high on my list).

I am one of the few boarders alive through all of the 70’s and I don’t want to do this. 🤷🏻♂️

Ten15 has a valid point.
Contrarily, I would like to add that Joe Ely's self titled album came out in 1977, Goats Head Soup is 1973. Concert for Bangladesh is 1971, Guess Who Live at the Paramount is 1972, and that these four are all just amazing albums I couldn't live without...
But how can anyone not acknowledge that the greatest album of the 1970's, and maybe of all time, is...
Deep Purple's Machinehead. And not just because Smoke on the Water is on it. what's better than lazy, space truckin', and most importantly, Highway Star.

Love March by the butterfield band is just terrible. Two is better because of theme from an imaginary western.
in reply to chvrch.
edit: am way too young to have gone to woodstock.
acts that played woodstock that are in the tk for their shows since the late 1980's: havens, melanie, arlo, baez, country joe, santana, john sebastian, canned heat, mountain, grateful dead, john fogarty, the who, everyone in the airplane except spencer dryden, joe cocker, alvin lee,the band, johnny winter, blood sweat and tears, csny, billy cox.

Not to stir up this debate again, but London Calling? I left it off my 80s list as a personal choice even tho it was eligible. May I include it in my 70s list?

I grew up on At Fillmore East, but in retrospect, I like Eat a Peach better, and, I like Brothers and Sisters as the best of all Allman works.

fwiw I have precedent since I included live albums in 80s lists
I'm willing to hear arguments on film soundtracks as well but that shit seems dicey

Soundtracks like The Big Chill with collections of previously released songs should be a no, imo, but soundtracks of previously unreleased material like Batman ought to be eligible.
Not sure how to handle Saturday Night Fever which features (mostly) new Bee Gees material, but also many previously released tracks from other artists (and the Bees Gees themselves). I’ll probably include it on my list - if nothing else, it’s an era-defining record. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm spending this morning trying to compile the list of albums I'm just considering for my list and this is daunting af. Leaving certified classics off of my nominations list b/c I know they won't crack my top 100-150, despite being all-timers.
Also thinking I may self-impose a 2-albums per artist rule, just for the sake of my sanity.
