Battles/Protomartyr were good last night, but man does (Brooklyn's) House of Vans have shit sound. That's especially problematic for a band like Battles that requires such precise sound. Regardless, fun time (esp. with Thissy and company) and you can't go wrong with a great double bill and free beer.
Man, "Atlas" still kills live.

At the Drive In were predictably ok last night. It was a little depressing, they played a 2,000-capacity venue and there were maybe 400 people total. Twenty One Pilots had a line for the adjacent venue that wrapped around At the Drive In's; the best part was when Cedric led into 'Cosmonaut' by saying, "I heard Twenty One Pilots are next door... Well, we don't need TWENTY ONE people we only need five! And we don't call ourselves pilots, we call ourselves COSMONAUTS"

yeesh. i can see why the chicago show got dumped and riot fest added them for a pretty low billing (relatively)
i guess that's what happens when you milk the reunion for 5 years and play the same cities.

They did sell out two nights at The Riv just last year. I'm a little surprised this tour (supporting new music) wasn't more successful.

Probably because the new music isn't good. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I got my ATDI fill at Lolla and never need to see them again.

kinda my point tho. anyone who wanted to see them back together who wasn't around for lolla saw them last year.
even ignoring that metallica was that night, i probably still wouldn't have gone cause that new album did nothing to make me want to pay to see them again.
also something something Jim Ward purists something something

Ward not being there definitely impacts my interest having already seen them with him.

Turtlenecked put on a fun show last night. For such young dudes they definitely have their shit together and their set is really tight. I'd only listened to the album once and I wasn't sure how I felt about it, but they pull off the quirkiness well live and it ends up being fairly endearing. The exact opposite could be said for Cool American. Not particularly tight, not much focus or urgency, and nothing memorable in the tunes themselves. Worth noting that it was my first show at the downstairs part of Subterranean and it's so much better than the upstairs. They had a Destihl sour on! Highly recommended for any shows there, although it is tiny. Reminded me of the old Crown Tap space. Glad they were solid live, and I feel ya on Cool American. I found the album they put out recently to be fairly tepid. Was Turtlenecked the headliner? The tour hits STL on July 3rd and if they go on early enough I may make the trek.

They were. None of the bands on the bill played longer than 35 minutes, though.

the lawrence arms and dillinger four were both great tonight. lawrence arms played "the north side, the l&l, and any number of crappy apartments" which i dont think ive seen in years, so that was especially great and a blast for me. had a great time.

aside from the above....the sound at house of vans fucking sucks. i didnt notice it before, but the speakers they have for the PA are fucking tiny. the sound really is not good for a rock band and that was a real bummer. probably part of why i thought the preoccupations set there wasn't great.
this is a corporate space, they really need to get at least just a normal pa. the speakers were about the same size and quality of diy shows i'd go to in brooklyn. really should step it up if just for their brand.

I've noticed the sound issues as well. The space was not built for music, although that seems to be the primary use for it, at least for now. What time did you line up? I got there around 745 and they made it clear I was not getting in.

I like how both the NYC and Chicago House of Vans have been trashed for shit sound on the same page.

Has anyone been there for non-concert stuff? Going to some art party there on Saturday and I'm wondering if there will still be free booze.

Yeah I didn't think that many people would show up based on all the tweets being sent out telling people to RSVP. Oh well, lesson learned.

There really is no better performer right now that Nick Cave....incredible show last night in Vancouver. Only disappointment is that there isn't a 2nd show tonight like the last tour.

I was thinking that this morning. Like there are bands I probably like better and have seen more, but was thinking Nick Cave and Radiohead, I've always left their shows feeling like something just happened.

QOTSA at the Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls were solid last night. Mostly a hit parade with two new songs (the single and "Evil Has Landed", pretty energetic); sadly it seems as though they are moving away from including the self-titled or even earlier deep cuts, which makes sense.
The venue tried to enforce no recording but eventually the usual mutants got their snaps and videos in. All in all fun show.

I feel like those are the two records they play most from live tho. I guess it's exciting to hear them in order?

I mean, there are a few songs in common rotation from Being There but it's a pretty long album (two discs). YHF in completion is just classically great.
