Shoutout to mookie for giving me his +1 VIP for taking back Sunday last night. Somehow had never seen them and I had a blast chatting with ya and drinking roughly a gallon of peach vodka
Roswell kid we’re fine when the lead dude just shut up and played the tunes. Pronoun were cool and are still figuring it out as a live act but keep an eye on them going forward
S/o house of vans security for throwing a guy out for being violent in the crowd, then letting him back in, and letting him get into an actual fistfight in the pit with some other guy for a good minute. Both had good form on their haymakers and glad they (security and the crowd) let em get that toxic masculinity out. Crackerjack job

Square Roots was a mess yesterday, lines everywhere. Both food & drinks required purchasing tickets, and the fest was not staffed well enough to keep the lines moving. From the time I got in until I got my first beer was about 45 minutes. They need to just get rid of the ticket system already. yeah, lincoln is just not wide enough like some other fest streets to have stands on both sides and still get around easily. big shoutout to the stands that took cash as well as tickets. i don't know what kind of deal they make with square roots to do that, but it is very much appreciated.

ian noe was terrific at square roots this afternoon. his set was made better by rango and avb being there. scots, who I've seen 3 x before over the yrs, including in their native NC triangle and at lounge ax, seemed lethargic by contrast afterwards at the other stage, even tho they are definitely a good band.

Sunday afternoon is the best time to do Burger Fest, unless of course Vampire Weekend @ Metro tickets go on sale, which thankfully wasn't the case this year. I ate burgers, drank some beer, and hung out with people I already know. 10/10 would do it again next year.

Caught Gaby Moreno at the bandshell on Saturday night and while I was completely unfamiliar with her as an artist, she put on a delightful show. Tons of special guests including a few songs with Aterciopelados and Jackson Browne sitting on the final two tunes of the night (including an excellent rendition of "Across the Borderline").
I think we did the thing on the board a year or two ago where we figured out the longest period of time between seeing an artist perform. Jackson Browne must hold the record for me now: 32 years and 364 days (saw him at Poplar Creek in 1986).

All time great Phish show last night at Alpine. "Ruby Waves" clocked in at 38 minutes long, making it the 7th longest jam in the history of the band. Longest since 2003.
A bunch of bustouts (first "Olivia's Pool" in 692 shows, first "Icculus" in 6+ years, etc). They played "Contact" in the middle of YEM because Trey said a guy at the hotel told him he would only propose to his girlfriend if the band played Contact on Sunday.
Really special stuff.

Madison’s premier Mekons cover group, The Wekons, opened for Mekons tonight at the high noon saloon. Mekons fucking killed it and then both groups played the last song together. Not a great show to forget my earplugs for but a great show overall.

did a mekons cover band really open the mekons show? lol . They did and it ruled. Also throughout the set they kept saying “We’re gonna do a Wekons song now” which didn’t really stop being funny

Once again, James did not play Laid last night. I get that they've probably played it a million times, and they're sick of it, but it still made the set disappointing for me.
Thankfully, the Furs did bring the hits. They opened with Love My Way, and got to Pretty in Pink before the encore, so I didn't feel obligated to stay until midnight (or however long they ended up playing). They sounded great.
I was surprised at how full the Aragon was. When this tour was announced, I figured this wouldn't sell well, and that the show might end up getting moved across the street. However the floor felt mostly full, at least while James was still on. Fans did start leaving in droves throughout the Furs set, myself eventually included. They probably would have done better to move the entire evening up by an hour, given that the average age of the audience was probably around 45-50.

Baroness and Torche were good last night as usual. Lousy crowd though, they barely moved through all of Torche's set, and barely through Baroness too. Plus some idiots talked at top volume right behind me during all of Torche's set where I was stuck standing.
Torche sounded great and were loud as fuck. I'm a bigger fan of theirs, so I enjoyed their set much more. New songs sounded pretty great too.
Also a tip of the hat to the singer from Baroness for wearing a Nothing shirt while I was wearing one last night too.

First time at Durty Nellie's and I'm not sure how I feel about the venue. If that wasn't a sold out show I would hate to see one there. I do appreciate the easy parking and proximity to Spunky Dunkers for a quick stop on the way home though. As for the show I though the sound seemed a bit off even though I tried a few spots. As Mookie pointed out the crowd was super talkative and pretty tame.Despite that I thought Torche and Baroness were great. New material from both bands sounded fantastic. Plus I picked up a nice little art print from John Dyer Baizley.

My review of Spunky Dunkers is that everything there was real good. Red Velvet cake donut. Blueberry cake donut. Double chocolate cake donut. All top notch. The only drawback is that I had to share them with my wife and daughter.

I wasn't there, but Phoebe joined Conor Oberst on stage at Thalia last night. No setlist up on setlist.fm yet, but I'd obviously assume some BOCC was played.

Currently at ELO. As an old, I feel the need to apologize to everyone else for the way old people act at concerts. The piece of shit sitting behind me told the same story (in her outdoor voice) about seeing Led Zeppelin in 1973 three times during Dhani Harrison. We get it... you're old, now shut the fuck up.

Best sets of the weekend at UMS:
Empress Of (probably my favorite set in all the time I've been going to this fest) Miya Folick (bummed that she had some sound issues and had to cut short her set, but she sounded amazing) Earthgang Wildermiss Y La Bamba Corsicana Liza Anne
Short weekend, but it was fun. Ended up closing out the fest by winning tickets to Acid King and getting my last beer for free because some drunk dude cut in front of me in the beer line, so it ended on a super high note.

it only took 25 years for me to see jawbox after first listening to them. and i was not disappointed. they crammed a ton of songs into about an hour and forty minutes. they played most of For Your Own Special Sweetheart and a bunch from the self-titled album. they were energetic and sounded very good.

Death Cab were on point last night. They were into the show and brought lots of energy, it was a great crowd as well. Chance did not show up.
That was my first time seeing Beach Bunny, who was also excellent. My buddy ran into her at Wrigleyville Dogs after the show. She's just like us!

The Idles/APTBS show was as great as I expected it to be thankfully. APTBS were their usual selves, loud af and nuts. Always funny to watch peoples' reactions when they have never seen them before.
Idles were great as expected too. Played for an hour and 20 minutes or so, wasn't eexpecting that long of a set. Surprisingly good crowd too, good pit up front and no one was being a jerk or got hurt in it.

Nilüfer Yanya was terrific at Sleeping Village on Wednesday. Really great crowd so all of the quieter parts were knocked out of the park.
Pixx was soooo good as the opener too. Highly recommend her new album Small Mercies. One of my favorites from 2019.
It was my first time at Sleeping Village too and that venue is A+++. Love the patio, love the beer selection, love the sound and sightlines.

I did not listen to APTBS prior to the show so I did not expect the strobe light effect or the "in the round" moment but it made for a memorable set. The IDLES banter was great and it was a well-paced setlist compared to what's listed on setlist.fm. I thought the moshing was going to be bad, but I think LH does a great job at keeping people safe since the floor is slick. Groovy warned me to finish my beer before IDLES started and two minutes later I was drenched in it so I lol'd at myself.
