Losing my mind at Jason Isbell playing back to back sets with substantial overlap at a fest that's presumably all Isbell diehards. His shows could be so much better than they are lol

Funny story, my girlfriend got a call that she won tickets too and it must have been right after I got the call that I won. She tried to have the guy put the tickets under my name because she wasn't aware I won too and doesn't wanna go, and the guy just laughed and explained that he literally just got off the phone with me and couldn't give me anymore tickets. Kinda surprised we both won, seems like this tour is selling alright everywhere else. Also I've never been to Navy Pier for a show, what should I expect?

Also, last night the opener for St Vincent was a comedian. I actually really liked that because it was better than listening to a band I don't care about for 45 minutes

Man, I have been looking everywhere to win tickets, I checked Do312 a few days ago and they still didn't have an entry to win them, and now they do today. I just entered to see if they're still giving any away

i went to the bottle last night to see frankie + the witch fingers and acid dad. first of all, my leg muscle memory was off when there was no ramp after the hallway bathroom. that new area really threw me off for about five minutes. acid dad ripped. they sounded really good. the headliner was also pretty good. their singer did a very good john dwyer act.
there was a guy who bought a record at the merch table but wanted to be in the pit and didn't really know what to do with the record. so, for some reason, he held it up to the side of his head while he lingered on the pit's periphery. that record blocked the view for a few people behind him. one guy just barreled through him into the pit, which apparently upset oblivious record guy who then got pushy.

Friday was a good double show night for me. I first saw Caroline Kingsbury at Beat Kitchen. I've mentioned her album here before, it's pretty great for fans of the Killers and M83, big anthemic type rock. She was the opener, so there were only about 30 people there, but the crowd that was there loved her set. She seemed extremely appreciative too.
I then headed over to Lincoln Hall expecting to have tons of time before Injury Reserve started. I was outside around 9 when the opener was finishing up. Place was really packed, like I'm sure they oversold it, so I was stuck on the top of the stairs in the back. Somehow, Injury Reserve decided to start at 9:10 (show started at 8:30). Their set was pretty great though, it was only the two guys performing in front of a red curtain with some pretty cool lighting. Crowd was really going nuts, it was very good to see.

saw waxahatchee last night at white eagle hall in jersey city, which is a beautiful venue (converted small church) with fantastic sound. waxahatchee sounded amazing, as per usual. this was my first in-person show since 3/20 (not counting seeing birbiglia at city winery a couple months ago), and i thought i would be uncomfortable. i was not.

Yeah Lucy was tremendous. Her main touring guitarist is out with COVID and they managed to put together a really great show. Going Going Gone will be a fun crowd singalong in the future, and the Dancing in the Dark cover rules.

Monday night I saw black midi at Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis with Timbo. Our flight out of Midway was delayed by a few hours, we made it to the show 10 minutes before they went on. They rocked the joint. There was a pit going a few times, with a crowd surfer or two (one of them tried to take a selfie, lol). They played some new material and some older cuts, their set was 75 minutes. Some people were chanting for one more song at the end, the lead singer smiled and said, "that's the end, go to sleep now" as the lights came on.

Gary Gulman was good, not great last night at the Vic. Started really strong but clearly got frustrated and derailed by a talker in the front row. Threw of his rhythm for a while but finished strong.
Lucy Dacus was terrific at the Vic the night before. She gets better live each time I see her.

i went to see lurk and militarie gun last night. militarie gun was better than i expected, based on what i'd previously heard. but they'd done an audiotree session earlier and the singer said his voice was not in peak condition to do 2 shows in one day. still, i thought he sounded fine. lurk headlined and started out like gangbusters. they front-loaded their set with what i think are better songs. the crowd was super into them.
this was downstairs at subterranean where the stage is only like six inches off the floor. a guy who was taller than every band member even when they were on stage posted up in front of the singer's mic and stuck around there almost their whole set, except when he dabbled in the pit. i know tall people have a rough deal at shows, but isn't that the absolute worst place for a very tall person to spend an entire set?

Waxahatchee and Katy Kirby were wonderful last night. I thought doors were at seven, so I showed up at 7:45... turns out they were at 8:00 and I ended up in the front row? Certainly not complaining. I honestly enjoyed Katy's set just as much as Waxa's, she played the entirety of her album, plus a great Alex G cover, and an intriguing new song. Loved her crowd banter, and her band was excellent - clearly tight but with a playful looseness that elevated the tracks with extended instrumental sections, especially the peak of "Cool Dry Place." Her album is definitely top 10 for me this year, and I hope to catch her again soon!
Waxahatchee then played a killer set - fitting 23 (!) songs into an hour and a half. Ofc, she did everything from Saint Cloud, and those were huge highlights. Other than the obvious hits (Lilacs, Fire), the crowd was also really into Hell and War, two of my favorites as well. Got to hear her band (Bonny Doon) do their standout track, "Longwave," an Emmylou cover, and a smattering of songs from American Weekend through her previous record. Of these, "La Loose" was probably my favorite. All in all, a great night!

Saw 2 pretty good shows over the weekend. First was OOZE Fest at the Bottle, which was a two show fest dedicated to Oozing Wound. That was the first time I have seen No Men that I remember, they were pretty great. I know they have opened tons of shows around here, but I don't think I have caught any of them. Cemetery were second, and uh, they were not good. Melissa was really great too, don't know anything about them at all if they're new or what, but they were pretty raw and loud as hell. Oozing Wound were pretty great as usual, didn't play as much from the most recent album as I hoped, but it was still a really good time. Crowd was getting pretty nuts in the pit too, good times.
Saturday I went to see Jacques Greene finally at Sleeping Village. His show there was the first one cancelled for me at hte start of covid, so I'm glad I finally got to see him. His set was probably one of my favorite electronic/dance sets I've seen, up there with Jon Hopkins. Another really good crowd at that one too thankfully. He didn't even play my favorite song from the most recent album, and it was still great.

I saw Dead & Co at Red Rocks on Tuesday. I was a bit hesitant going in - they've never really been "my thing", but I figured it would be one to cross off my list and I'd get to see John Mayer play some. I was also at the tail end of a head cold, getting slammed at work, and it was going to be in the 40-45 degree range.
We arrived an hour before showtime and I have never seen such a massive amount of people at Red Rocks. We had to park nearly a mile away in a lot I didn't even know existed and walk uphill the whole way to the venue. We had GA seating which was supposed to be the last 20 or so rows and when we got inside that entire section was overflowing. We ended up on hanging out on one of the tree planters by the top row. By this time I was contemplating just calling it a night and heading home but figured we might as well stay for a bit...
...and guess what? It turned out to be a really fucking good time. The crowd was awesome even though it was packed to the gills. I had plenty of layers on so didn't get too cold. Our "seats" were actually great because it was a clear night and we could see the entire city. Standing on the planters we could easily see over the rest of the crowd. I LOVED the performance and totally get the appeal now. We actually stayed until almost the very end and only left a bit early to beat the traffic since we had a 4/5 mile walk back to the car (downhill this time). 10/10 would do again.
tldr: I like Dead & CO now.'
PS - I overheard one of the staff saying it was the first time any incarnation of The Dead has played Red Rocks since 1987. Not sure if that is accurate but pretty cool if true.

Tuesday set list was ridiculous, you got a good one in that regard. I think it’s the first time they’ve done Althea as an encore.
Phil has played red rocks and Bobby was just there this past summer, I think any non-side project it makes sense that it hasn’t been since 87.

Saw Garcia Peeps again last night! It was my third time this year, and the first of four nights in a weekly residency at Sultan Room. They killed, as usual, only caught one new song - written and sung by their keyboardist - and it ripped. Highlight of the show was an exploratory 10-minute jam that exploded into a cathartic take on Total Yang that was then stretched out for another 15+ minutes. This is the best rising live band in the world right now.
Sadly, the room was pretty empty - probably only 1/4 full or so. Idk if it's market saturation, or Wednesday night, or what, but these guys deserve to be so much bigger than they are. Seems like every funk-based jam band can sell out multiple nights at 1,500-cap rooms, but the psych bands struggle to move 100 tickets. How can we rectify this? I will start a fucking PR crusade if I have to (read: start spamming their music on reddit and Twitter) #JusticeForPsychJam

There were like 20 people at the Madison show which I thought would be a bummer but they didn’t seem to care much lol. They played like 3 or 4 new tracks and they were all insanely good

Bleachers were awesome at Aragon Fantastic crowd as well. They were into every song Only negative was Aragon only had their main doors open for exiting near the entrance so it took like 20 minutes to get out of there. That definitely seems like a health- safety hazard.

Sylvan Esso put on an insanely good show tonight. They were a ton of fun and played pretty much everything I wanted them to. It was nice to actually see them up close, the only other time I’ve seen them was a shorter drive-in show during the pandemic so it was really great to experience it all. Lido Pimienta was pretty good. She would probably benefit from a bigger band but it’s just her and a drummer. Still pretty neat though.
Oh and set times for those going to the Aragon 8:10- 8:55 Opener 9:25-10:45 Sylvan Esso
