Definitely up there as one of the better times I’ve seen them, I think that show might have put them in the double digits for me. Matt was obviously in great spirits and wow Coady Willis is a beast. I was worried about Des leaving but they didn’t lose a step. I kind of want to go again tonight but the hangover is real and intense today.

Turnstile was fucking awesome last night. Last minute show because the Suicideboys show got postponed, and then they moved it to the small room of the venue at the request of the band who didn't want a barrier on the stage so it was pretty intimate and just one of the best and most energetic crowds I've ever seen in Houston. Hell of a set start to finish. Even got them to do an encore which I don't think they do often. Played for about an hour and just so much energy that entire hour.
Slowthai opened, I've only listened to him a tiny a bit, but he was a blast too. Ridiculously energetic and crowd was almost as rowdy for him as it was Turnstile and he kept hopping in the crowd and raging with everyone
10/10

i had a good time at my morning jacket last night. in theory, the "no repeats all weekend" thing is cool but how many people are really going to multiple shows? there were a few standout omissions. nothing from Evil Urges either. but i heard some songs i really like that i haven't heard them play in a long time, so that was neat. they didn't banter much, but at least that meant none of the overboard banter that i've heard plenty of from jim james over the years.

Billy Strings was so god damn good last night at the Aragon. Really great crowd full of super nice people that were getting down.
He's basically at must-see status at this point.

I was at MMJ last night, keeping an eye on the Billy Strings setlist and absolutely kicking myself - you guys got so lucky with some great covers I've been chasing. I'd just seen him Wednesday in Milwaukee though, and let me tell you that show was a HEATER. Give it a listen if you get a chance. Milwaukee goes hard on a Wednesday night! My friends and I were all blown away.
I originally only intended to see MMJ on Thursday, but got my arm twisted twice more. It was a week of diminishing returns with a stellar Thursday show, very good Friday show and lackluster Saturday show - never been a fan of the "hits"-heavy setlists, and if I never hear another song off Circuital I would be happy.
My friend and I ended up having box seats again last night and arrived to find people in our (front row) seats. We chatted a bit and learned it was a father and son, and their first show (not sure if it was their first show together or first MMJ show, awww either way) so we decided not to make a big deal about them being in our seats and just sat in the back of the box. We later asked if they were excited, big fans etc. they said "we've listened to them some" and then they spent a good chunk of the show on their phones :/ Our goodwill thusly squandered, at some point they left to check out the show from the floor, and we moved up into the front seats for the remainder of the set. Then after the show we had a really nice chat and turns out the dad had been standing in front of us at the Milwaukee Billy Strings show. They were really very lovely and nice and I'm sure I will see them again. It is a wild and small world.
#pray4alady that booster + masking was sufficient to avoid a breakthrough case. So fucking disappointing seeing how few people were masked at the shows this week, especially at the Auditorium, which was advertised as mask required.

So fucking disappointing seeing how few people were masked at the shows this week, especially at the Auditorium, which was advertised as mask required. yeah, this was kind of mind-blowing. i was in the first row of seats behind the pit on friday and there were like 5 people masked up in the pit, not including a decrepit old man who couldn't keep his balance. my experience so far has been that people at vax-only shows are more likely to not wear masks once inside.

Ended up being able to go to the Black Dice show at Co-Prosperity last night. It was my first time there and almost everyone there was younger and cooler than me.
The opener, Aitis Band, was really good. Ended up having to leave after one Black Dice song though since they were incomprehensibly loud and we forgot our earplugs.
Got a couple eggplant sandwiches from Ricobene's and watched Succession instead so it was a great night regardless.

This weekend I went to the Columbia Experimental Music Festival, where I saw Armand Hammer, Yellow Eyes, Patrick Shirioshi, and Thom Nguyen. All of these were very good. The venue for these was a chapel designed by Eero Saarinen (who also designed the St. Louis Arch). Armand Hammer made several jokes about playing in a church ("come see us after the show, we'll find a table, or a pew.") Yellow Eyes plays experimental black metal, and the irony of a black metal band playing in a church was not lost on the programmer, who introduced them. There was no vax status check at the door, but 98% of the crowd was masked the entire time.
I bought the deluxe pass on this, I want more cool shit like this to come to Columbia.

Buck Meek was terrific tonight, as always. His music really could not be further up my alley.
Great to see him keep playing bigger venues too. I've seen him be an opener at Schuba's, headline Schuba's, and now headline Lincoln Hall. So happy for him.

Kidi Band, the opener, was awesome as well.
Never heard of them but they reminded me of a stripped down Tune-Yards/Local Natives with strong Mount Wittenberg Orca vibes

I definitely enjoyed the Hamilton/Morby show last night. Jess Williamson was good as the opener, she does have a great voice and it was good to see her popping up during the other sets.
I tried, but I am just not into Kevin Morby's music at all. It really should be right in my wheelhouse, but I just did not connect with it at all. One or two songs were enjoyable, but otherwise it just fell in that bland zone for me like War on Drugs and Courtney Barnett.
Hamilton's voice was fantastic though, and the songs from the last two albums sounded great at the Vic with that backing band. His stories about some of those songs were pretty funny too. I would really like to see him again at some point live. I was thinking during the set how great a Walkmen reunion would be too.

I thought Kevin Morby was terrific but Hamilton was even better. Lately at the Vic we've just been going to the last row in the balcony where there is plenty of room to stand. Sound is perfect up there, whereas I've been super close to the stage at the Vic and the sound has been horrible. I think I'm done with GA there

Got two movies in last night, saw two shows tonight what a week.
Titus doing the Monitor was great. Excellent show. Disq was fine opening. Tight band, but it’s wild that 95% of the issues for a band with three different singers are the vocals.
Then managed to run over to Sleeping Village and catch all but the first 5 minutes of Armand Hammer. They were excellent and seeing them do an hour in a club was perfect as opposed to the P4k set.

Julien Baker was perfect. I've been a ball of emotion/stress lately and it was nice to have an outlet - first time I've teared up at a show in years.
Dehd = meh.

I was supposed to go but dinner w/ friends ran late, so probably wouldn't have made it until right about the time Julien came on. Didn't want to get there and find no decent place to view it.

Saw Protomartyr on Monday. It was the first show of the tour for them, and also the first show back from the pandemic for them. Still a good time. Wild that Kelley Deal is just in the band now.
Guided by Voices on Friday was probably the 3rd best time I've seen them of 9 times. Started right at 8:30 and clocked in at like 2 hours 45 minutes. Bob had like 3 stage beers and maybe a quarter of tequila which is probably the least I've seen him in those 9 times. Aristotle never really defined if catharsis is stronger for the audience or the performer(s), but watching this version of the band genuinely makes me happy- they all clearly love being up there and that's why their current output is maybe better than it has a right to be. Crowd was really into it. Thalia needs to put Pacifico on draft, white people love that shit in Pilsen.
Squid were really goddamn good last night. About an hour of no nonsense, playing the music, and making sure all the toys on stage did what they were supposed to do. I didn't realize the drummer was also the lead singer which makes them cooler imo. Sharkula was the opener and I laughed for the first 10 minutes of his set. Say what you will about the quality but it was definitely better than having whatever flavor of the week indie band do like 8 songs that all don't say or do anything.

I'm not sure what the original Bottle time rule was but on Monday 8:30 start meant 9pm and last night 9:30 start meant 10pm. It is extremely inconsiderate that they do not factor in my edible usage when starting these shows.
