It is extremely inconsiderate that they do not factor in my edible usage when starting these shows. Ah, now I see why you enjoyed the opener last night

I'm not sure what the original Bottle time rule was but on Monday 8:30 start meant 9pm and last night 9:30 start meant 10pm. It is extremely inconsiderate that they do not factor in my edible usage when starting these shows. Right? Some of us need to know how to time things.

How long has Kelley Deal been playing with Protomartyr? I know at least since the March 2020 SV show?

Saw Nitzer Ebb at Metro last night. It had been 31 years since I saw them open for Depeche Mode in Tinley Park. The performance was good, not great. My main complaint was that it was not loud enough. The crowd aggressively chanted for it to be louder and they turned it up a bit, but I actually took my earplugs out.
Crowd was really into it - there were a surprising number of 20-somethings. I was center stage about half way between the stage and the soundboard. The pit broke out right in front of me and my friend, who is a high school teacher. She alternated between mixing it up in the pit, and being all teacher-y telling the kids if they were getting too wild. She was also with me at the Tinley Park show, and is the one who found my shoe after I lost it in the pit at a Front 242 show at the Riv. Good times.

Adrianne Lenker was amazing at Thalia Hall last night. I've never seen a solo acoustic performer command a room like she does. The crowd singalong to "anything" gave me chills; she started harmonizing with the crowd and it was just so genuinely special. Also never seen anybody get kicked out of a box at Thalia Hall before, but that happened. The group was so drunk even before the show, and one of the guys was so distracting with his singing/yelling/dancing during the show since those boxes are basically on the stage.
Made it to the Bottle to see four songs of Silver Synthetic, who sounded so fucking good. What a great band.

Adrianne Lenker put on a spectacular show tonight. Also the opener cancelled and it was already an early show, so she came onstage at like 6:30. Getting home by 8:30 from a show fucking rips
Also the set was great. Really beautiful and intimate

Caribou was great as always. Got there right as Jessy Lanza was starting, was so empty but she threw down too. Really hope Caribou comes back for like Pitchfork or some other fest next summer. New songs sounded great live

Parquet Courts on Wednesday night was great for the first 2/3rds or so. Then they did a string of run of songs from the newer album mto end it that just didn't have the energy. And that's not to say everything doesn't work, they played "Plant Life" earlier in the set and that's easily one of their best live songs and "Walking at a Downtown Pace" rips too. But the couple in a row at the end just killed momentum and you could feel it in the room. I'll admit I haven't listened to this new one near as much as the other stuff. Overall a fun show but they should have paced that setlist better
John Moreland last night was great. It was just him and another guitarist and that setup worked well, the guitarist with him was awesome. First time seeing him and I'm glad I did

^^^ guessing the guitarist with Moreland was John Calvin Abney - they had played some house shows at my friends' in Marin, and JCA ended up living with another one of my friends out there for a good part of last year, writing and putting on backyard shows here and there. He's a really good dude by all accounts.
Saw Shy Boys and Video Age last night at SV. Shy Boys get a lot of play around our house and they did not disappoint, they were so charming and earnest and excited to be playing for more than ten people lol. Also their drummer is approximately 11 feet tall and a great harmonizer.
Video Age was also super fun, a little more polished and a lot more dancey which was so fun. The room was full but comfortable and it was so nice to be at a club show again. I think this is my first one back.

i saw rookie at the bottle last night. this was originally scheduled for march 2020 and was postponed at least twice. they played some songs from their album, some new stuff, and covered "going down the road feeling bad" and "werewolves of london." they sounded great.
the only hitch was that the frontman broke a guitar string and tried playing through it. he fiddled with it during a song. then someone grabbed another guitar for him, but it wasn't tuned right so he spent a minute tuning while they played through. they should've just stopped the song and let him sort it out. otherwise, great set.

Saw Bug at the Steppenwolf. Really terrific and Carrie Coon was absolutely phenomenal.
Highly recommend people see it before it closes in a couple weeks.

Saw the second night of Yo La Tengo's Hanukkah residency last night! First time going to one of those shows, and the vibe in the room was incredible. They've really cultivated a community of heads over the years.
I wore my Sun Ra Arkestra t-shirt to the show, on a whim... and wouldn't ya know it - the opener was Sun Ra Arkestra! So obviously that was great - they sounded even better than when I caught them last month at the BRIC Jazz Fest. Todd Barry did a solid 15-minutes of standup and then YLT came on around 11:00pm. Pretty good set from them, tho not as good as their Summerstage show earlier this year. More subdued - which I enjoyed - but I was also very tired so I could only enjoy it so much. Highlights were "I Was The Fool Beside You" which blasted the roof off the place, and the section of five songs where five members of the Arkestra sat in! That alone was worth the price of admission. They did a YLT track, an early Sun Ra doo-wop track, a couple of covers, and closed with "Nuclear War," which was far-and-away the highlight of the entire night.
All in all, and awesome show, and I can't wait to go back (two more times) this weekend!

After skipping nights 2 & 3, I returned to Bowery Ballroom for Night 4 of Yo La Tengo’s Eight Nights of Hanukkah residency. Nels Cline and Yuka C. Honda opened as “Cup”. Nels is great, but that was (mostly) not my jam. They also sat in on the entire YLT set which was awesome and very rock/punk heavy. And John Cameron Mitchell came out in the middle to sing VU’s “I Found a Reason” and Lou Reed’s “Waves of Fear”. He killed it.

Baroness was a lot of fun last night. Not the setlist I would have picked and they fought technical difficulties throughout, but once they got rolling it didn't really matter what they were playing. Very cool to see them in such a small club and there were enough of the songs I wanted to see to make it worthwhile.
Also great to see krentist and wretched+1.

This version of Baroness is just so fun to watch. They are incredibly talented and super tight. Given a set like that there aren't many bands I'd choose to see over them at this point.
And I was waiting for that acoustic guitar Gina was playing to just spontaneously combust because her solos were straight fire. Incredible stuff.

Got an excellent opener for Night 5 of Yo La Tengo's Eight Nights of Hanukkah residency on Thursday night: Low. They played a bunch of songs from their latest record which I hadn't listened to, but "The Price You Pay" stuck out as a particularly captivating tune. That was followed by "Sunflower" and a couple of tunes from the Christmas EP, beginning with "Long Way Around the Sea" my absolute favorite. I was so thrilled that I had chills all over, especially since I never imagined I'd have the opportunity to hear it performed live. The set closer was "Just Like Christmas" which was also a nice treat.
Fred Armisen was the comedic opener. I don't care much for his act and about 50% of his material was a repeat from when he was a Night 2 YLT opener in 2019. But at the end of his set he expressed deep gratitude towards the audience, which came off as very genuine. He also performed for a full half hour which is much longer than the 10-15 minutes most of the comedians get at these shows.
As a result, Yo La Tengo's set started a little later than usual - 10:15pm rather than 10pm. Ira noted it was the 37th anniversary of their first-ever gig and they opened with two (mostly) instrumental numbers that they opened with at that show in 1984: "Surfin' with the Shah" (a Urinals cover I didn't recognize) and "Five Cornered Drone (Crispy Duck)" which, despite its age, sounded very much like classic YLT. Armisen came out for the fourth song to sit in on drums and he was onstage with them for the rest of the night (including the encore). The first half of the set was relatively mellow ("Black Flowers" and "Nowhere Near" were the standouts for me), then the second half was rocking with this glorious ending: "Big Day Coming" > "Sugarcube" > "Ohm" > "Story of Yo La Tango".
For the encore, Tara Key of Antietam came out and played one of her songs (Antietam played with YLT at that first gig 37 years ago). Then Armisen came out from behind the drum kit, picked up a guitar, and led the band in a excellent cover of The Clash's "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais". Finally, Alan and Mimi returned to the stage and Alan led the band in a phenomenal cover of Neil Diamond's "I Am I Said" followed by the closer, "Keep It Warm" by Flo & Eddie.
Certainly the best of the three nights I've attended this year.

Side note: Who remembers the Lolla board gathering on April 13, 2007 at Gingerman when someone from Metro came in with a bunch of free Low tickets? And then we all went to the show and people got kicked out for being too inebriated. I know doctorace was there. And a general note about the Eight Nights of Hanukkah residency: it seems to me like they are digging deeper into the rarities on this run. Might just be my own perception or my own YLT blind spots, but I'm hearing a lot of material that's not familiar to me.

The NYC trip was a good time as expected. Didn't get to meet up with the board folks unfortunately, but it was still good (monastery I think you might have been standing next to me at YLT for a few minutes before you moved?)
LCD were great as usual, as we've now seen it's pretty much preparation for another fest headlining run. Brooklyn Steel is a very good venue, really great sound there. There was one bass sound during their set that the whole room was amazed how it sounded. Good setlist, a lot from the first album. Call the Police and Dance Yrself Clean nearly had the place erupt.
Hold Steady we're good as usual, although I really wish I had gone Wednesday instead. No surprises or anything, just their usual straightforward set. Brooklyn Bowl isn't too horrible, not the best sound though.
It's always a crapshoot seeing Yo La Tengo, they have put on sets I absolutely loved, and some that were dull. Last night fell in the dull category for me, since I did not care about the jazz group that was the opener (Fly or Die?), and then they did like songs with them later where they really did not help. For the encore, Ira said everyone who wasn't seeing them tonight should go see Dream Syndicate instead, and they then covered a DS song. Then during the song the members of the band came out and played with them. They played like 3 more of their songs after that. I'm not a Dream Syndicate fan, so unfortunately this did nothing for me.
Otherwise, a good trip, although finding the roach in my hotel room yesterday was not a great end to the week.

I like a lot of the tunes from last night's set list; wish I'd attended. Especially now that I see Chad Taylor sat in on drums during the set - we used to hang out and play together a little bit back in college. He's extremely talented; way out of my league.

It had been a minute since I'd been to Schubas, but it was worth going out last night for Graham Hunt and Sonny Falls. Graham blazed through a ferociously fun opening set - kind of had the feel of Weezer if Weezer was good, with a bit of Television punch? He has such a great ear for catchy melodies and brought a lot of energy live - I think he picked some of that up from touring with Mike Krol, definitely recommend seeing him if he's in your town (I believe he's based out of Madison these days). Sonny Falls had a hard time following their act and were plagued by technical difficulties in their short set - a few false starts, and overall needed the vocal higher in the mix. I didn't stay for Old Joy/St. Marlboro, but both opening sets made for a chill early night out. Also of note, I was pleased to see around 80-90% mask wearing in the venue.

Last night was Night 7 of Yo La Tengo's Eight Nights of Hanukkah, an excellent show made all the better with rango420 in attendance. Joshua Abrams' Natural Information Society opened and they were 100% not my jam. They did 47 minutes straight of noodling over a single chord, which felt a little like torture. I passed the time people-watching and checking my phone. Hari Kondabalu did 20 minutes and he was very funny. Yo La Tengo began their set at 10:20pm (their starting time has progressively crept later and later throughout the week) and they were joined onstage by NIS for a lovely version of "Green Arrow". NIS left and the core trio launched into one of my favorite VU songs, "I Can't Stand It", and some other mellower tunes including "Mr. Tough" and "Let's Save Tony Orlando's House". NIS returned for three more songs including "Last Days of Disco". For as much as I disliked their opening set, NIS added some nice depth to the handful of YLT tunes they sat in on. After NIS left the stage, the set list took a turn towards the RAWK including "Drug Test" and a cover of "Too Animalistic". They ended with "We're An American Band" and "Blue Line Swinger" - both outstanding. For the encore, the trio began with a Dylan cover, "I Threw It All Away", then they brought out Jon Langford and Sally Timms for a Ramones cover, "I Don't Care", and two Mekons tunes, "Dan Dare" and "Keep on Hoppin'". Langford half-jokingly but half-seriously complained that YLT picked the Mekons songs. Of course, they brought great energy to the stage. I missed the rationale for this, but best of all, they ended by playing "Dan Dare" again. It felt like they were on the verge of playing it a third time at the crowd's insistence, but that ended the evening. The last show is tonight and that will wrap up the live music year for me. Looking forward to seeing rango420 again and monasterymonochrome !
