I was going to lasagna on the San Holo show since they moved it to Radius, but I did end up going. Found a parking spot like a block away, so I was happy about that.
There were three other acts/djs /whatever opening. What I didn’t know was they were each going to get an hour. Ugh. First one, Duskus, was fine but pretty unremarkable. Devault was second and was better, but started leaning on samples of popular old songs after a while and it got old.
Kasbo was third, and I actually really liked his set, he had really cool visuals backing him up too. But man, there were some really annoying people around me, like the young couple directly in front of me that were all over each other and I have no idea how the girl did not spill beer all over me.
San Holo was last and started at midnight. Man did he have some great production for his set. I was really impressed. Songs were pretty good, almost had to do medflies of a lot of his songs since he had two long albums to pull from and only a little over an hour to perform.
I actually left right at the end of his set since I remembered the overnight parking ban was now in effect in the city and I didn’t want to get towed. I guess I missed an encore, but oh well. Radius is a great venue though, especially for an electronic type act. Really excellent sound and pretty open room so there’s not many bad views. I found a perfect spot right in front of the sound booth that had like a 4 inch step, so I had a great view above everyone through the whole show without blocking anyone’s view behind me.

Whitney was really great at Schuba's last night. They had everyone lock their phones away in those pouches so I assumed they were playing new music, which turned out to be correct. Ended up getting a spot to the side a few feet from the stage.
New stuff is very different. Sounds a lot like Rostam. Julien wasn't playing drums either so the beats and samples really made that difference pretty drastic. They said the album was mastered today and it will be out at some point next year.
They played older songs too that were all very stripped down since they weren't using a live drummer.
Julien said he'll be back on drums when they go on a full tour so I'm excited to see what the full band sounds like on this new material.

I'm at the Killers, the Aragon is absolutely packed. The entire upstairs/balcony is VIP only. They're currently showing a trailer for the new a Scream movie.

I'd wanna be slashed to bits if I were at that show so that tracks. It was a good show. Didn't get Jenny but I liked hearing some of the new songs live. It was nice to see Keuning back with the band as well. I'm surprised they're not playing My Own Souls Warning live, that was the better single from Imploding the Mirage.

Late review but I saw Blood Incantation and Primitive Man at the Beat Kitchen on Sunday. This won't be a review of the show itself (it was predictably awesome), but it was a matinee show and I just want to say that every Sunday concert should always be an afternoon matinee even if that doesn't really make sense from a logistical standpoint for most artists. It was just great pregaming during the bears game, seeing an awesome show while day drinking and making it home by 6 for dinner and early bedtime.

I don't understand why every venue didn't jump on adding matinee shows after everything reopened as a way to make up for lost cash. It's win/win/win for everyone.

The She & Him show was pretty snoozey last night. Didn't have high expectations anyways. My tickets were the last row on the floor in the middle section, right in front of the sound booth. What I found really strange was NO ONE in sections in front of me as far as I could see were taking pictures or videos or anything. I just found that very odd, especially for a band with a celebrity in it.

Dude at the show 6 inches shorter than me asked if he was blocking my view, then stood behind a dude 6 inches taller than him. Bless his heart.

Very much enjoyed the Dodos show last night. If that’s the last one, I’m glad we went.
Very much did not enjoy being outside and around other people. Saw no less than three (3) folks blatantly run red lights on the 15 minute drive down and a guy who looked like knock off Britt Daniel was so hammered his lady had to take him home 20 minutes into the set.

The Dodos were terrific last night. Such a great vibe in the venue and they sounded unbelievable.
So glad I was able to see them one last time if they do end up calling it quits.

The War on Drugs was kind of disappointing last night honestly. Something with the sound mixing was off and the guitar seemed really drowned out which kind of ruined some of the solos. Never really had an issue with sound at this venue before either. Also only one song from A Deeper Understanding was a bit of a bummer.
It was an outdoor show and it was kind of cold last night but that really wasn't as bad as I thought and the venue had hot toddys for sale which was a great choice

i saw the jayhawks at old town on saturday afternoon. the opener played way too long and they talked far too much between songs. oh, you quarantined with your sister-in-law and now she and your wife have an album and you're going to do some songs from that? cool. you know you're opening, right? i was looking at my watch doing the math after every song like "if they play ## more minutes, then there's 15-20 minutes between sets, then how long can the jayhawks play until they need to end to get the night crowd in here?" finally some stage hand came out forcefully pointing an index finger like "you have ONE more" after they kept saying "we've got time for a couple more tunes."
the jayhawks sounded good. they obviously don't have the pipes that they did 20+ years ago, but they played well. i looked at setlists this morning and there were a few songs they played at other shows i would've liked to have heard, but no huge omissions. gary talked a bunch, but they're the headliner and can do that. it was a good time. last time i saw them was ten years ago in that stretch when mark was back in the band. also, even though this show had been sold out for like two years and postponed several times, i ended up snagging a ticket on friday at one of the tables. not bad.

Def a bummer, especially considering how good their live album from the last tour sounds.

Free Throw show was fun last night. Pleasantly surprised to see about 75% of the crowd masked up for most of the time, even for such an energetic show. For me not knowing any of the songs played last night and going solo I had a really good time. Just good to be seeing live music again.

I didn’t enjoy the Cloakroom concert but it was nice to see some boarders.
Matt Talbott was good in theory but people were not feeling it and the crowd noise from the bar was overwhelming.

lyrically similar to Hum certainly (not a big enough fan to tell a song based purely on the lyrics) but musically it was just him and a guitar playing just a few long notes per song. He had some other electronic tape deck and potential drum machine stuff set up but as far as I can tell didn't use them or used them very sparingly. I dug it but had my earplugs in solely to cut down on background noise. Cant really blame people tough opening set at 10pm on a Friday night at a loud show.
I thought Cloakroom were great tho

Twin Temples was fun

I would agree that the mix for War on Drugs last night was really weird in spots. Like every key/synth focused song felt like it was half volume. That being said getting "Ocean of Darkness" live debut, 2 really good Slave Ambient songs and a really fantastic light show was a really great time.

I thought the sound was good and everything seemed pretty loud maybe it was just placement in the theater? definitely didn't think anything was too low in the mix. I do think after 2 and a half hours a lot of their stuff kinda blends together but it was still a pretty sick show with a real inspired light show and surprisingly good vibes for a friday night. Still think probably the ideal venue for them is outside.
Advance Base/Karima Walker show at Constellation was pretty fantastic too. Constellation really has fantastic vibes when I'm not pretending to like a jazz thing. Glad shows are back

Lucy Dacus was good last night, but she really should have just postponed the show due to her back injury, instead of spending the whole show laying on the couch. The novelty of it wore off after a couple of songs, and they didn't do anything to play it up or anything at that point either, which might have made it more amusing at least. And she opened with Triple Dog Dare, which seemed like a really weird choice, since that's a great set closer.
Inidgo De Souza was very good again at least. And amazingly, all but a very small amount of people actually kept their masks on through the show, which I was pretty shocked at. And Thalia is not doing the covid test for everyone entering that they were doing a few weeks back, just checking everyone's shot records as usual.

Oh yeah I forgot, apparently the big main bathroom at the top of the stairs where they scan your ticket at Thalia is unisex now? I didn't even notice the sign when I walked in since my glasses were all fogged up from being outside as usual, but figured that out pretty quickly once I was in there.

Yeah, she had another guitarist, but did play guitar too on maybe 4 or 5 songs
