Wet Leg crowd felt all the fuck over the place demographic wise- dads, dads of dads, moms (of moms?), as well as young people. The unifying things seemed to be the band and a love of Miller highlife tallboys.
They sounded good and they’re going to be/are already yuge. Buy in when you can. I got $20 on them being on the Lolla lineup and an aftershow at the bottle

I'm a dad who was drinking Miller Highlife tallboys, so your story checks out.
I agree, they're a lock for Lolla. If they do an after show at the Bottle I'll most likely be there.

They have to play a show in Denver before they've truly made it.

Will echo that the crowd was weird for Wet Leg, but also it’s kind of weird being in public now? And it kind of feels like folks give even less fucks than before?
Either way, enjoyed both sets and thought Wet Leg were a lot of fun. Good stuff, don’t want to leave my apartment ever again.

Teekoh and I probably stood next to each other for 15 minutes before we figured out who we were. Everyone was off their game that night (except for wet leg)

Cautious Clay put on a good show last night, but it was tough to enjoy myself with the unseasonably cold weather in Austin. Scoot Inn is a cool venue, I wish we could have places like that in Chicago but unfortunately we wouldn't be able to use them half of the year.

Yo La Tengo made up for the lackluster Hanukkah show I saw them do in NYC on Saturday night at Thalia. Much much better setlist this time around. Ira made a few jokes about how excited they were to play for St. Patrick's Day in Chicago, and that was their only show right now besides playing Leprechan's in Hoboken. Almost all of the gear they were using was borrowed from Wilco, since this really was a one-off show pretty much, so that was cool.
And last night worked out perfectly with me dropping off my daughter and her friend for Billie Eilish, then I went over to Cobra Lounge for Pom Poko. I can pretty much already guarantee that the Pom Poko show will be one of my favorites of 2022. They were incredibly great, the songs from last year's album just ripped, and the new ones from the new ep are pretty good too. I'm guessing once they mount a proper tour (there was just a NYC date and a few SXSW shows coming up), they'll be breaking through.
Opener was this funny weird guy called Pleasantries who performed solo, but made crudely animated videos for his entire set with backing tracks of course, and they were ridiculous and great. Worth catching at some point.

Tallest man on earth was enjoyable last night- pure solo show at old town. It was nice to hear some songs of his that I forgot I knew. First time since 2015 for me for him- dunno if I need to see him again but he was one of the first “indie acts that I discovered” and he’ll always have a place in my heart for that.
Bonobo last Friday was a good time once the ticket chaos was sorted out- I would bet they gave out half the tickets for free. Should’ve been at concord or something. Live band did wonders, having jamilla woods come out to do her song with him was a nice touch. Happy to report that fat cat remains in business too.
I had an anxiety attack Saturday afternoon so I missed parquet courts/mdou moctar which I’m bummed about, especially missing Mdou.

Gwen Stefani was a blast. She played Spiderwebs and I danced my ass off to it that made me so happy. Actually like half the set was No Doubt songs that ruled. Shouting about bananas was as fun as I could have imagined. Ideal rodeo act over the lame pop country stuff they normally book would recommend

Car Seat Headrest was really terrific last night. They've always been a great live band but their light/sound are elite now. They took two requests in the middle of a prepared setlist and the requests were perfect: "Something Soon" and "Drugs With Friends". Ended up being able to see most of Garcia Peoples afterwards thanks to the tip from perdhapley. They were so awesome. Hell of a show and they are super nice guys. Was able to chat with a few of them afterwards when I bought some merch.

Haven't actually got to see them yet and they are here in May and I'm ready

Godspeed You! Black Emperor were pretty great last night. Probably a band I'll see pretty much any time they come to town if I can. Thalia was a great venue for them but it probably should've been a seated show. I think they're better than Ween.

FACS was good last night and played some new material for an upcoming release they're recording this week, but they were outshone by Mike Lust. I hadn't seen him in probably ten years since he was a spiky haired youth doing guitar tricks and somehow he's morphed into a desert druid since but he put on a good as hell atmospheric fuzzed out set.
Look at us all going to shows on a Saturday like it's the Before Times

MPH & I had a date night with Portugal the Man and alt-J last night, thanks to Do312 More. Booking this tour in small arenas was clearly a misstep, as they've had to cancel several stops in smaller markets (including Milwaukee on Friday night) due to poor sales. The original opener (Sir Chloe) was also dropped in favor of Windsor, who I've never heard of.
PtM got an hour and played a set comprised of classic rock/metal covers along with assorted tracks from their 2013-present catalogue. I enjoyed the set but it's clear they've lost a lot of the popularity they gained during the Woodstock run, as they played to a half empty arena/late arriving crowd. Or maybe there's just not enough crossover between their fan base and alt-J's?
alt-J, whom half the board managed to avoid listening to during somewhat meteoric 2013-2015 rise was fine, but they're also clearly on the decline. By the time they hit the stage the arena was mostly full, but I'm guessing there were lots of comps/giveaways to fill out the crowd. I'll admit I haven't listened to their two most recent albums, and as they played their earlier songs it dawned on me I probably hadn't listened to them at all in at least 5 years. I'd forgotten nearly all of their lyrics, and I guess they have a song called "Chicago" now. The production and light show was kind of cool, but I suspect the next time they come through they'll be back to playing clubs or theaters.

At Big Ears this weekend and taking notes after each set. Gonna post them in here as the fest rolls along.
- So Percussion / Kronos: also featured Caroline Shaw, a beatboxet and the UT Percussion Dept. Started off interesting, ended up mesmerizing. Second piece with full ensemble, and the song with audience clapping along to beatboxer were highlights. Dude even mimicked a turntable at end. Final piece was stunning. Don’t have the vocabulary to adequately describe it. Like a Dirty Projectors climax with earth rattling breakbeats and cinematic strings. Beautiful start to the weekend.
- Dos Santos: a lot heavier than I expected. Settled into a thick psych groove on second song w/ stop/starts and organ solos. Congas + set & double heavily effects-laden guitars makes for a thick soup. Wow this is heady af - they’ve been going 15 mins. Played album songs after - also great. Lmaooo dude dropped SpottieOttie into his organ solo near the end
- Shabaka + KSO: Started with Entr’acte by Caroline Shaw, loved the discord in the plucked strings. Next was Copland Clarinet Concerto (orig written for Benny Goodman) feat Shabaka on clarinet. Was incredible. Shabaka took an unaccompanied solo between 1st and 2nd parts and from there it was gorgeous. Great combination of vintage Copland wistful strings and clarinet stabs, runs, and harmonies. Left afterwards, but the KSO did Appalachian Spring to close.
- Areni Agbabian: Jazz vocalist / pianist on ECM. Caught 20-25 mins with resounding acoustics of First Baptist. New song Undeserving was jaw dropping. Loved her accompaniment and moving, sometimes wordless, vocals echoing through the church
- Sparks: Singer in Yellow jumpsuit and robot man Ron on the keys; soloing with a 1,000 yard stare and no movement beyond the elbows, love how the spotlight is on him after every song. Singer low key dressed like Billie Eilish. Highlights: I Predict; Stravinsky; Angst; My Way. Holy shit #1 Song in Heaven is the highlight of the day. Crowd up and dancing, Ron busting moves, energy through the roof. Saw Jeff Parker and Makaya (?) omw out of the theatre.
- Low: These songs feel holy. Mimi’s kit was two cymbals and a snare. Bass triggered from a pad. Alan was magnificent. Hey What translates beautifully love and Nothing But Heart is a fucking anthem. Low is one of the Great American Bands.

Bright Eyes show was great. I’ve wanted to see them since I was in high school so it was really exciting to finally make that happen. Would have maybe liked Road to Joy or Everything Must Belong Somewhere in the setlist but ultimately happy with what we got.

Big Ears Day the Second:
- Stumbled on Lenny Kaye doing a book signing and Alabaster dePlume playing sax at Jackson Terminal
- 75 Dollar Bill: Line wrapped around the building, only Big Ears can make these guys genuine rock stars. Must be 400-500 people in M&M. Big Band today, nine piece, second song was new to me and sounded incredible. Short, but everything they do great - especially w/ violin section. Focusing in on cowboy and maraca guy, finding it really hard to zero in on his rhythm, even tho it looks so simple. These songs move to their own inscrutable pulse. Left after 25-30 mins, had to get to next act. But happy to see them crushing on a big stage.
- Leyla McCalla: presenting songs from Breaking the Thermometer, her album based on archival research about Radio Haiti. Extremely moving songs sung in Creole, one about revolution w/ intense rhythm and lilting banjo melody. One translated to “Why” a cover from “poet-laureate of Haiti.” You Don’t Know Me, with awesome jazz guitar solos. Leyla switched seamlessly between banjo, cello, and electric.
- Arooj Aftab: Huge line, I got in 15 mins late, she was in middle of second song. Amazing how full and rapt the massive TN Theatre was. Everything about this set was perfect. Harpist and violin players were the co-stars for sure, but Arooj’s voice was downright powerful, especially in the vastness of that room. Looking forward to seeing her star rise even further. Also huge ups for drinking a glass of wine throughout. Near end she held it up and said “How many songs do you think this is?” They did one more, Sans Lo, the standout of the performance.
- Nathalie Joachim: Performing all new tracks for the first time. Her voice was almost unfairly good. New songs were sparse - mostly vocal samples and violin accompaniment, but they were captivating nonetheless. Fascinating between song breakdown on the necessary, utilitarian, beautiful creation of Haitian Creole. Lmao the speaker busted into static halfway into a song and she just rolled with it.
- Jeff Parker: This is the coolest band on the plenty. Here Comes Ezra was incredible - vibed out, effortless but immaculate funk. Josh Johnson (?) with a killer sax solo and Makaya bringing his deft, light touch and magnetic charisma to the drums while Jeff’s shimmering chords rain down from above the mix. Oh my god Makaya’s solo on Visions just blew my mind. Fuuuuuck. Two Max Brown songs - Gnarciss and Go Away - were filthy. Makaya and the bassist (Paul something?) were locked into the groove throughout. Jeff’s solo was on the wall and the sax at the end took it home. Can’t get enough of their sound.
- Damon Locks + Black Monument Ensemble: Another 9-piece group! Four singers in the choir + Angel Bat Dawid on vocals and clarinet & Ben Lamar Gay on trumpet. The two of them weaves dense circles around Now (Forever Momentary Space) and the choir was a constant highlight of the set. Blending their harmonies against the booming electronic accompaniments of Locks and two percussionists. This band is a joy a watch - and hear. Damon’s dancing during Spark to a Fire was on point. That song was remarkably elevated in a live setting. Switched the next song up and handed up lyric sheets for the choir lmao. Not sure I realized how cool and intricate these vocal arrangements are until hearing them live and seeing each of the singers click their individual parts into the collective
- Patti Smith: Opened with Kimberley - Lenny’s got his cowboy shirt on, love it. Free Money was fiery, loaded with energy. Patti was rocking around the stage screaming the chorus. Shit ruled. Next song was “written for my friend Johnny Depp’s birthday” *nervous laughter in audience* “What? Is that funny?” Song - “Nine” - was actually awesome. Loved the jammy bass-forward segue into the final stanza. Southern Cross song was a huge highlight. I’m a sucker for a good 6/8 stomper about the ocean or stars or some shit. Jackson Smith, on guitar, tore it open on the solo, which peaked with a call/response with the bassist who furiously rolled into his own vocal section. The whole band swelled into a final chorus with Patti rousing everyone to their feet and shouting us back to life. Next was Because the Night and Pissing in the River - both of which she owned. She’s rock royalty, but she knows the stakes are high - and they feel high in her performance. Fan calls out I love you between songs. “But now you profess love like some forlorn Shakespearean minor character? Thank you.” *piano enters* GLORIA. How is this song so affirming? It’s about lust but it feels like an ecstatic prayer. I ducked out after this and jogged across town to catch a doubleheader at Mill & Mine
- Animal Collective: Is Geologist playing a fucking hurdy gurdy? Yes he is. Time Skiffs tracks heavy in beginning of set. Everyone sounded great - love the Deakin / Panda duet on Prester John. Dropped In The Flowers in the middle too, first time hearing that live - as fun as you’d expect. Their vocals sound so much better than either of the other times I’ve seen them. Maybe cuz Avey doesn’t shout as much anymore? Played a ton of new / unfamiliar stuff, two of which were excellent - the rest were good but one went on for a bit too long. Closed with a weirdly cathartic Unsolved Mysteries. Probably the best I’ve ever heard them? But not the best setlist I’ve seen of theirs.
- Mdou Moctar: is a fucking rock star. Breakneck tempos, casually mind melting, cosmo bursting solos. The drummer is a madmen behind the kit too - and idk how the rhythm guitarist kept up the whole time. Dude’s right hand was going at an… let’s say impressive velocity. But let’s focus on Mdou. I started this set a fan, now I’m adding him to the “Greatest Guitarist Alive” conversation. Holy fuck. Every time the dude stepped to the right of the mic, electricity shot out from his fingers. Hard to pinpoint a favorite moment. They were all that good. Just kidding. They did Afrique Victime since I typed this and I think guitar music just peaked. Dude was taking like Metallica speed solos and the drummer was rattling off machine guns solos throughout. Mdou Moctar is metal af. Y’all need to see this band.

Saw Nick Cave and Warren Ellis last Sunday last minute. Nick Cave was good and Warren was having fun and the rest of their band was enjoying the moment. Nice to hear "I Need You" which might be my favorite NCTBS song.
Alabaster dePlume played an hour long set at sleeping village and I drank a lot of Vallejo. Was a nice time. Pretty sure it was a wholly improvised set based on the band though it clearly had some song structure. He was selling his new album that comes out officially in ~3 weeks so you better believe I picked it up. Monastery and I will be the only ones who like it this year.
I was also at the Ratboys/Retirement Party show. Shame that Retirement Party is, uh, retiring, because they were really good. Glad I got to catch them at least once since I still dig Runaway Dog. I thought Ratboys were good too- we were right by the Notre Dame radio station that drove to Thalia for the show and I'm pretty sure they knew every single song. There was also a dancing person in a rabbit suit on stage which was weird to watch only because the head kept almost falling off and I was not on copious amounts of marijuana.
