wook achievement unlocked: traveled to see king gizzard & the lizard wizard in Detroit Friday and Cleveland Saturday. the venue Friday was so unprepared plus it was an acoustic show, so kinda weird night all around. Saturday fuckin ruled besides GA bleachers being oversold. highlight was when they were at peak metal/derangement and a luxury cruise floated by right behind the stage. not sure why so many (or all?) of these shows are on the water, but i'm here for it. i didn't see any ice cold fatties either night but the people watching was exquisite. excited for this weekend's show! I haven't looked over the setlists yet, are they pretty much just completely mixing everything up, or are they doing like blocks of the good metal stuff and then blocks of the jammy stuff? they've played 93 diff songs over 9 nights.

I left Pearl Jam night one feeling full. This band's floor is so high, and that setlist was absolutely stacked from front to back. It didn't hurt that they are touring their strongest album in over a decade, and also that they happened to play my favorite song of theirs (Black). Great show, and it was nice to finally meet doso at Gman after. Can't wait for night 2 on Saturday.

Great to meet you, too! Loved the show. Vibes were very good. I’m exhausted.

i saw gaslight anthem at salt shed last night. i hadn't seen them since lolla 2012. they were fun. the setlist was backloaded big time.
julia from ratboys sang on a couple songs, but sounded like she'd never heard those songs before. (coincidentally, she was standing next to me the last time i was indoors at salt shed for jason isbell.) she was reading the lyrics off the floor, jumped in too early for a couple lines on "here's looking at you, kid", and seemed hesitant once or twice on "the '59 sound." just a little awkward.
i would be shocked if it was 3/4 sold. a lot of room to stretch, a lot of open space on the sides and back of the floor.

In other reviews news, I saw Waxahatchee at Beacon Theatre on Wednesday night. Pretty much the same set from when we saw her in Boston back in April. I love her two most recent records so no complaints. Hope she brings back some of the Out in the Storm material down the road. I appreciate how there’s basically no light show on this tour - presumably to put the focus squarely on the music. Always a pleasure to see Spencer Tweedy drumming.
The only annoyance was the motherfucker two seats away from me watching the baseball game on his iPhone for about half the concert. At least there was zero chompin.

Knew Pearl Jam would be a good show opening with "Release", the song they opened with the last time I saw them 11 years ago. Got lucky on seats and had a great section. 300 level at Wrigley for a concert is pretty good. Eddie is a cornball but dude can still sing and the rest of the band sounded super tight. Hopefully it's not an 11 year gap before I see them again but time will tell.

7/10 Pearl Jam show so 9/10 any other band. Very special band, still no band better at making big venues feel a lot smaller.

Release is never a bad opener.
That was a good show! Nice mix of old and new in the setlist, just enough nuggets to please the old heads. Thought the woman who sang on "Won't Tell" did a great job. My seats were perfect, really nice view. I had a whole row to myself and didn't have to touch anybody lol.
Here is my request for "Leash" on Saturday.

I think that'll happen and am obviously fairly confident we'll get RVM, Yellow Ledbetter, Jeremy, and Better Man too. Now that I know where the bar that pours doubles is I'm pulling for an Even Flow repeat as well.
I wish it sounded better, maybe it does now that EV isn't abusing his pipes as much, but I'd lose it if we got Whipping Saturday. I'll settle for Spin the Black Circle I guess.
Also please Footsteps and/or Crown of Thorns
Breath too
Damn, they have a lot of sick songs.

That show was so awesome. I was pretty blown away to the point where I really want to double dip on Saturday.
Had no idea Eddie could still sing like that. Genuinely remarkable that he's still elite 30+ years later.

Also there was a younger couple next to us who werre going nuts for all of the songs off the new album. Knew every word.
But they looked so bored/ambivalent during the hits. Very very funny.

He still smokes cigs I think, which is annoying, but he sounded so much better than last fall (that was the end of the tour though too) Also the DTE>Porch first set closer was v v strong. Loved that.

Pearl Jam night 2 was another great show. I'm a little tired of them playing Wrigley but it is clear that these shows means so much to Eddie. Garden -> Porch as the opening was top notch. Come Back and Smile were songs were highlights for me. Falling Slowly with Glen Hansard was great too. As much as I love Pearl Jam I'm beginning to think that Ed's idea of how a setlist should be put together just doesn't agree with mine. He seems to love jumping from high energy to low energy while I'm more of a slow build person. I don't have many complaints about the setlist, just the order. I also find it telling that in 2 shows I've seen since Dark Matter was released, I've seen 8 of the 10 tracks preformed live (with three being repeats at both shows) while in 4 shows since Gigaton has been released, I've seen 4/12 tracks and they didn't play a single one at Wrigley.

I don't know what exactly this means, but I'm going to make an educated guess it means you didn't drink, smoke, or have edibles, at northerly island, because you drove there, instead of taking the 146 CTA bus, and that it's tough to make it through this [edit: not a jam] band's show and its noodling w/o being drunk or stoned.

They are not a jam band and if you can't enjoy that band sober idk if you can enjoy anything in life.
Then again, I didn't raw dog it.
Thus completes my three-city tour with king gizz, with rankings of Cleveland > Chicago > Detroit. Closing last night with a dance party was unexpected but so good. Those guys clearly love Underworld.
Yesterday, my husband called me wOOk, rhymes with duke.

I thought N1 was better than N2, but both were great shows. I was expecting them to repeat Even Flow, Alive, and some of the Dark Matter songs, but I was surprised to hear Porch and Given to Fly a second time. Smile was a nice treat, I would have loved to have gotten more than one Vs song though. Separately, I learned that you do not want to be in the first row of the grandstands at Wrigley, since it is actually below field level and the stage is completely obstructed by the crowd on the field. Luckily I was able to sneak my way into the field and watched the entire show from a great vantage point in right field with other people who must have not liked the views from their seats.

True Life: I Rawdogged a 3+ Hour King Gizz Show Because I Decided to Drive There Picturing you standing towards the back and just staring straight ahead, hardly blinking. In truth I was dancing/bobbing around the whole time and honestly a little confused why barely anyone else was moving except to maybe nod their head. When I go to see a 100% jam band such as King Gizz I do typically enjoy a little somethin'-somethin' to help me get lost in the sauce on the longer tunes but they held my attention just fine. It was a great, dancey show and a beautiful night to be at Northerly. Top 5 other bands represented at King Gizz, by apparel: 1. Phish 2. Billy Strings 3. Pearl Jam 4. My Morning Jacket 5. Grateful Dead

I liked the second show too, I thought both were solid. The repeats were odd but not unwelcome. Garden was an interesting opener and RVM killed as a first set closer. I always love Throw Your Arms Around Me but I feel like we've gotten it at a few Wrigley shows now. Was lucky enough to see the show with one of my dearest, oldest friends who recently beat cancer - and who dragged me to my first PJ show (Alpine 2003). We had a Baba O'Riley/YL closer at that one too.

Also I did not realize that "3 hour marathon show" re KGLW meant 3 hours with no setbreak. Diabolical!

I saw a guy in a goose shirt, I bet he was confused On the way into the venue, I could not remember if Goose was the one I liked or Geese show was mostly good, opening with Nonagon was fantastic. There was a good solid hour where there was nothing I cared about though, but then later they played a lot of newer stuff I wanted to hear. Left during the dance/electronic thing at the end (and saw alady!), but I would be very into them doing an album like that, would be much more interest than the jammy stuff. also I love that once again the guy bathroom line was like 20+ guys deep, but there was zero wait for the women’s bathrooms

I’ll add that that jammy portion was the perfect time to hit the merch stand since there was no line at that point either.
Also, not sure how often Northerly does that with removing the floor seats outside of the pit, but I really like it that way much better

The move is the bathrooms behind the house left stands, there's never a line. I had a whole trailer to myself and it was pristine.
