Oh I went to merch during mild high club too because they suck and their album together might be my least favorite.

went to flaming lips hometown okc summer freakout shows over the weekend and they were a blast! night 1 was yoshimi in full + more, night 2 was soft bulletin in full + more. got to hear christmas at the zoo both nights (they played the outdoor amphitheatre right next to the okc zoo) and some others i’d never heard before. great crowds, maybe 8,000 or so each night? shows were free, too, so that was cool.

I saw Charley Crockett last night, first time catching him despite wanting to see him for a minute, and it absolutely ruled. The band sounded great and Charley is such a great frontman. They were just ripping through everything, transitioning each song straight into each other with little breaks between but I thought it really worked great and made for a pretty constant energy that was a lot of fun, and the breaks they did take were well timed. The stage set-up and the bright colors made it look like I was watching a performance being taped for a 50's TV show and that was really neat too. Great show and he's definitely now on my I'll catch him any time he's in town list
Vincent Neil Emerson opened, I missed the first 15 minutes of the set because the venue had a shitty and slow security line (love a Livenation venue) but the 30 minutes I did catch were great, I love his voice and his band also sounded great. Really hoping they come back through for a headlining set soon, would love to see him in a small venue

Went to see Squeeze and The English Beat last night at the Chicago Theatre. The show was a lot of fun, and I was pleasantly surprised at the crowd's enthusiasm, given that I was possibly on the younger side of the median age.
The English Beat was fun, even though Dave Wakeling is the only original member left. He sounded great, and the current toaster/hype man did a really good job of exciting the crowd. The setlist included Tears of a Clown, but they did not play it. I think it might have been because Dave spent some time tuning various guitars between songs, and it seems like the night had very specific timelines, as they started right at 8 PM.
Squeeze came out with really high energy on "Take Me I'm Yours" and ripped through their 80 minute set of almost all hits. They were an 8 piece including an extra guitarist, drummer, 3 keyboard players and an additional percussionist, and it was clear they were having a lot of fun.
This is their 50th anniversary tour, which is surprising given the 2 leads are not yet 70. Glenn Tilbrook can still shred and his voice sounded great. Chris Difford plays the detached, cool bass player really well, and seemed to be having a great time. His vocals are a bit rougher than they had been, but "Cool for Cats" is still one of my faves.
Other highlights included a bossa nova version of "Goodbye Girl" including a strolling accordion that almost ruined the original for me. "Slap and Tickle" really bangs and the wall of sound that they get is impressive. The audience participation for "Tempted" is always really cool, mainly because it is not forced - everyone wants to sing along.
The only criticism I have, is that they end with "Black Coffee in Bed" and use the end of the song to introduce the band and give them all solos. They did this at Salt Shed last time as well, and it deflates all the energy in the room. They should do that as the second to last song, and end with "Cool for Cats", but I don't know if Glenn's ego would allow that.
Overall, A+ show. Mrs ten15 and I will go see Squeeze every time they swing through Chicago.

not as much as the everly brothers, or liam and noel gallagher, or simon and garfunkel, or hall and oates, or the late Johnny and Joey Ramone, but I suspect that they're only still in it "for the money," zircona.

Sarah Jarosz was great last night. Had never gotten around to seeing her before but the new album is nice and the band was tight as hell. When she swapped her guitar out for a banjo and her bassist switched to the upright this 70+ year old guy behind me went “Now we’re in FUCKING business” and he was right to do so. Petty cover was gorgeous, Massive Attack cover was unexpected but good. She really does have an insane voice and it shines live. Good night out on the town

More 90s nostalgia for me last night, this time in the form of Weezer's "Voyage to the Blue Planet" tour in Rosemont.
We were not able to get to the venue in time for Dino Jr unfortunately (over an hour in traffic coming from Lakeview), but we did arrive just before the Flaming Lips hit the stage. Before opening with "The Spark that Bled", Wayne pulled out a note from his pocket and declared that the Flaming Lips have played Chicago every year for the past 30 years except for the Covid year. Setlist.fm tells me that is not true, even if you count suburban venues like the Allstate Arena. He then went on to name all the venues and festivals they have played, but curiously omitted Riot Fest, which I believe they have played more than any other venue/fest in Chicago. Anyway, pretty typical Flaming Lips set, which is to say it was enjoyable.
Weezer had easily the biggest and most impressive production package they have ever had for any tour. They played a little movie of the band in space suits preparing for their "voyage" before a timer appeared on the screens, when the timer hit zero a space ship on stage "launched" to reveal the band. They started the set with a mix of greatest hits and deep cuts, before moving into a 5 song Pinkerton bridge and then finally arriving at the Blue album. The whole set was accompanied by a wonderful mix of campy rehearsed lines about their voyage (both pre-recorded and live from the band) and a visual display that played behind the band showing them moving along in space specific to each individual song. I couldn't help but think this show would have been great at the Sphere, but that is probably a bridge too far for a band like Weezer, even with this "level up". Still, this was an amazing show and I enjoyed every minute of it. Even if you are just a casual Weezer fan, if you have a chance to go see it I can't recommend it enough.

Really good double show weekend for me. First was the Fig Dish reunion at GMan. It was great as expected, it was sloppy and funny as ever. It was technically an album release show for a “new” album they just put out, which was a third album they recorded around 2000 but never released. They only played like 2 songs off that, but did a bunch of covers and tons of old stuff. I thought they’d only play for like 45 minutes for a combination of being out of shape and drunk, but the show was somehow an hour and 45 minutes. Ended with a cover of Cheap Trick’s Surrender with Scott Lucas from Local H and other friends helping out.
I also found my old Fig Dish shirt from a promotion for their first album from around ‘96 that I wore that night, and one of the guitarists saw it and laughed.
I think the opener Menthol now holds my record for longest time between seeing acts, I probably haven’t seen them since around 1997.
Saturday was the great metal triple bull at Metro. Despite playing tons of shows around here, I had never seen Djunah til last night. I thought they were usually a duo, but it was just the singer/guitarist with backing tracks, but she was good.
Pelican were awesome. Their set was actually all new songs for an album they just finished recording, so I’m assuming that will be out early next year. I moved to the back before Russian Circles and was surprised to see it was a very, very sold out show. They sounded great too, but I left about halfway through their set

Really enjoyed the Green Day/Pumpkins/Rancid show last night. First time catching a show at Coors Field, and it was a fun experience. Bullet point review:
- The Linda Lindas were terrific, and I was really not expecting to enjoy them as much as I did. Love having every band member getting an opportunity to sing, too. - Rancid had some weird mix issues throughout their set, but overall they sounded great. Guitar would drop off during songs, particularly at the back end of the set. Vocals sounded terrific, and singing Ruby Soho with tens of thousands of folks was a really great moment. - Pumpkins set was I guess fun? Billy doesn't really sound as good, and my god if he keeps pronouncing "believe" as "baylayf" I'm going to lose my mind. Still great to hear the hits, and Chamberlain is such a pleasure to hear drum live. - First time seeing Green Day and damn Billie Joe is a great frontman. Maybe a bit overeliant on the call and response, but he had the crowd from the start and they sounded incredible.
Also just insane how efficient this show was. We saw a schedule posted before the show, and every band hit their time on stage to a tee. The most "unrock" rock show I've ever been to.

And for me at least, that show would have been much more enjoyable if I were seated.

Yeah, there's "sold out" shows, and then there's "Metro sold out show over capacity" shows, and that was definitely one of the later

Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings show last night was unbelievably good and exceeded my sky high expectations. It felt special and intimate and it was a joy to see one of my favorite songwriters sing several of my favorite songs. I bought a shirt afterwards so you know it was good. Also the guy in front of me in the merch line bought every single album on vinyl which was awesome and probably the most measured response you could have after a show like that.

Pulp was really fun last night, but I didn't realize they played a second encore until looking at setlist.fm this morning I also thought the sound was weirdly good where I was last night? Haven't had huge sound issues at the Aragon for a while tbh

on the way into aragon last night, security hit me with "bike lights are not allowed inside." i bike to almost every show and this is the first i've ever encountered that. the security person said "you can take them back to your car", to which i said "oh, i can take my bicycle lights back to my car?" i'm sure you can imagine which words were emphasized. luckily, a supervisor saw the quandary and kept them in the office during the show. i'm apparently the first person this has ever applied to.
opener was extremely ill-suited for a venue of that size. and they may be the worst ian svenonius band i've heard.
but pulp was really good. not a huge fan of "i spy" to open and i would've liked more This Is Hardcore songs, but not a bad setlist. sound was especially rough for a few songs and decent for many. jarvis remains a great frontman. band was tight. i had fun; would probably put it #3 on times i've seen them.

Really enjoyed the Pulp show. Glad we moved to the back after the first song because the sound was really muddled on the left side by the bar area. Sound was much better in the back. Would be cool if they came back to Chicago in the future with a new album and playing a better venue, but I'm not expecting that.

This has been popping up as an issue when I go through security recently, too. Not sure what they're expecting that I will do with the bike light once I'm inside the venue - all smartphones have a flashlight component that is pretty damn bright, too. Just kind of funny to have a couple of security guys standing around the light like it's some puzzle they're meant to solve. Anyway, Broken Social Scene last night. Ariel Engle appeared with them, but otherwise it was the standard group. The show was advertised as You Forgot It In People in full, but it was more of a greatest hits set. They sounded great, but probably don't have a need to see them again anytime soon. Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom was a revelation - somehow my first time there. Independent venue in Five Points, and it's got a very Nola vibe inside - will be seeking out more shows there.

Night 1 of Goose at the Shed was basically all killer no filler. A few hiccups along the way, but a jivefecta (for the third time ever) was pretty sick! That Butter Rum and Echo on a Rose > Wysteria Lane was top tier! Excited to see what they have in store tomorrow night! Headed to Rosemont for Spacey Kacey/Mr. Misty/Nickel Creek tonight!
