Yeah, I guess that's become a thing now. Cool to hear they got up there. He specifically pulled me up though so I'll remain feeling cool.

Yeah I'm having trouble thinking of a better show. Like, ever.
Also I was at the airport and Nick Cave walked by my gate and was nice enough to sign the setlist I got. A+ trip to Chi-town.

That's pretty incredible, man. Crazy how those things happen.
And yeah, I think night 1 of Nick Cave was my favorite concert ever. I'm still not remotely over it, still replaying those shows in my mind.

Aw, that's great! I was a little worried about seeing him on this tour, just not sure how he'd *be* after such a tragic loss - if there might be some spark missing, if there might be an emptiness in his eyes, if he might just be going through the motions. But he was more playful than I've ever seen him - terrifying and screaming in your face and then just cracking a big grin. He smiled more than I can ever remember. That said, that was definitely one of the more emotional shows I've seen from him - I still haven't been able to listen to the Skeleton Tree much, it's too raw - but those songs were gorgeous last night, especially "Distant Sky"...I definitely teared up. Glad to spend that evening with y'all, especially the sheer goofiness of being on stage. SO GOOFY.

Surfer Blood was fantastic at Lincoln Hall tonight. They've started to "jam" a few of their songs, which is a welcome addition to the indie rock scene.

Man Eaux Claire was fun.
Top 5 maybe was
1 Wilco (which was hella surprising they actually looked like they wanted to be there and destroyed WATTBA) 2 Danny Brown 3 Mouse on Mars after show 4 Paul Simon w/ymusic 5 Chance
Festival space is super nice and they handled the impending storm super well (most acts that were cancelled one the side stages played a free after show at the sheraton although they officially announced it after Phil Cook performed which was a bit annoying but hey thems the breaks)

So glad you had a good time. From the pictures I saw I was worried that the rain had really fucked everything up. What was the John Prine set like?

Hold Steady was fantastic at the Bottle last night. Setlist was very heavy on Stay Positive material, which was ideal for me. There was a dude next to me the whole show who looked like a metal guy, even had a denim vest with Conan patches and other bands on it, so I thought that was odd. Towards the end of the set, he got on his knee and proposed to his girl. Given alady's story above, I have absolutely no idea how this set of shows became the go-to proposal event of the year.
The Hold Steady also did a cover of Styx's "Too Much Time on My Hands," which was great, and a punk version of "Stay Positive" as part of their encore.

So glad you had a good time. From the pictures I saw I was worried that the rain had really fucked everything up. What was the John Prine set like? The rain was basically a non event except for the rain causing them to cancel the side stages on Saturday but the rain held off and it ended up meaning that Wilco was able to do a 2 hour and 15 minute set vs. a hour and a half set which was a-ok with me. They ended up having the main cancelled performances (Mouse on Mars, Alpha Consumer, Velvet Negroni and Phil Cook) perform at the Sheraton in town after the fest was over for free. I missed Phil Cook cuz ubers were annoying which was a bummer but the Mouse on Mars set at 1:15 in the morning was all time. They had a bunch of guest vocalists including spank rock and random people from the audience taking the open mic super collaboratory and such. Har Mar Superstar was dancing right next to us it was a real 2003 situation. Velvet Negroni is also one to look out for. The John Prine set was great, it was probably an hour of various people doing covers and maybe 30 minutes of Prine actually performing which was a bit annoying because they could have very easily just done two different sets and given Prine a full set afterwards but i certainly had no complaints with the arrangements. They had swamp dogg duet with jeff tweedy on "Sam Stone" which was all time. Other highlights: An hour or so of new Bon Iver songs friday morning with the national brothers and francis to start the festival Chance, Francis and Bon Iver's new choreography to the Francis songs Jenny Lewis, Phil Cook and others doing 45 minutes of hits on the small stage by the woods the 2nd half of the tweedy set which included an awesome Phil Cook cover of Pop Staples's "Friendship" a cover of "The Losing End" and Phil Cook, Bon Iver, and Anais Mitchell not knowing the words to Wilco songs. Julieta Vengatas who I was only passingly aware before but was absolutely fantastic S-T-A-R-G-A-Z-E performing a bunch of original compositions with atustronatalis rapping over them was a trip to say the least, especially when it came right before a Spank Rock set. i guess they also covered Boards of Canada which is not my thing but people were really into it Danny Brown playing When It Rain during a huge storm was up there with Yeasayer at Pitchfork 2009(?) playing sunrise as the sun came out from behind the rain clouds for perfect rain moments. the generally good vibes and small crowd throughout the weekend too and IASM for being the the absolute boy

Nick Cave set last night was probably the best of the 4 times I've seen him. Really fun crowd, too. So, this is actually an interesting thing I want to note having seen him from both front row and mid-theater this tour. Front row was of course wild. A crazy shared, (as Wretched said) religious experience. Probably my fav concert of all time. Nothing like it. Show from afar was fantastic, and being able to observe it more passively cemented it in my memory further. HOWEVER, crowd was definitely kinda dead-ish-- more just watching-- where I was. Had to make my own party out of it, and got a few other people around me dancing (at the appropriate moments) as well. I think it speaks a lot to how Nick knowingly plays to the front few rows. Everyone gets a great show but up close is a while different thing with him.

Metallica was fucking great. about the best setlist i could've hoped for too. That was a great show but part of me wishes they would go with more spontaneity (for lack of a better word) and less spectacle. I know that is a near impossible ask for a stadium show but after that Nick Cave show on Friday it just felt like something was missing.

Lcd was fantastic as always. Great to see Thissy and meet DoSo. Them cutting Yeah for Home was ever so slightly disappointing but mostly because the band accidentally teased Yeah by habit. Also, finally heard emotional haircut which is really superb, but hearing tonite again really cemented it. That's my fav song of these four.

Evan Dando played all of the songs + Streets of Baltimore + I'll Be Your Mirror + I'm sure some others I didn't recognize. He still sounds mostly good and looks kind of a wreck but could still get it.

Turtlenecked put on a fun show last night. For such young dudes they definitely have their shit together and their set is really tight. I'd only listened to the album once and I wasn't sure how I felt about it, but they pull off the quirkiness well live and it ends up being fairly endearing.
The exact opposite could be said for Cool American. Not particularly tight, not much focus or urgency, and nothing memorable in the tunes themselves.
Worth noting that it was my first show at the downstairs part of Subterranean and it's so much better than the upstairs. They had a Destihl sour on! Highly recommended for any shows there, although it is tiny. Reminded me of the old Crown Tap space.
