The Jayhawks' new record is surprisingly solid after one full listen. Had the same reaction when they played a few of the new tunes at their Prospect Park show back in June. It's not going to be a Top 10 record for me, but it's certainly worthy of being in the rotation. I believe I read that these songs are mostly (all?) leftovers that never made it onto other records. That type of collection doesn't always work, but when it does (I'm thinking of Tattoo You), it can make for an excellent album.

I ended up knocking out tons of podcasts on my drive instead of music, so I've been listening to this at my desk over the course of the week. I'd like to give it a dedicated listen, uninterrupted, because I like it...this week has just been too busy for me to really hone in on it. I think I'm liking it a little better than okay and I totally agree that the songs sound very familiar. Not sure if that a testament to their ability to write a great song that instantly feels like a favorite piece of clothing you've owned forever or if it's a case where they're sort of ripping off their earlier material. Maybe a bit of both. |
