I still have 3 shows that could potentially be in the best shows of the year 4 - Romy 5 - Mandy, Indiana 16 - The Armed/Model/Actriz
Plus the Spanish Love Songs show at the Aragon if I can find a way to not pay $50 for that

A record 45 shows for me this year. Think I'll be seeing Andrew McMahon next week cause Jacks's Mannequin is my girlfriend's favorite band and I've seen him three times since we started dating but that's not going to crack any top spot. In no particular order:
Taylor/Girl In Red/Owenn at Soldier Field 6/2/23 Beyonce at Soldier Field 7/23/23 Pearl Jam/Inhaler at UC 9/5,7 Springsteen at The Fiserv Forum 3/7/23 and Wrigley 8/9,11 blink-182/Turnstile/Beauty School Dropout at UC 5/7/23 Goose at Salt Shed 4/14-15 and The Riv 6/21 The National/Soccer Mommy at The Auditorium 5/21/23 Bob Dylan at The Cadillac Palace Theatre 10/7/23 Carly Rae Jepsen/Kid Sistr at Metro 8/1/23 The Postal Service/DCFC/Warpaint at Salt Shed 9/23/23 MMJ/Devon Gilfillian at Chicago Theatre 11/10-11 Wilco/Horsegirl at The Riv 3/25-26, Wilco at Metro 10/30 Jessie Ware/Ty Sunderland at The Vic 10/5/23 Japanese Breakfast/Frankie Cosmos at Salt Shed 7/15/23 The Walkmen/RIP Dunes at Metro 5/20/23 Caroline Polachek/Ethel Cain/True Blue at The Riv 5/16/23 The Cure at Riot Fest 9/17/23 Dead & Co at Wrigley 6/9-10 The Hold Steady/The Mountain Goats/Dillinger Four at Salt Shed 7/1/23 Jonas Brothers/Lawrence at Wrigley 8/25/23
There's a lot more but these are probably my top shows. Outside of Taylor, Beyonce, PJ, and Springsteen, they're not really in any particular order, just ones where I had an amazing time. Probably the worst for me was the Phish run at the UC in October. My Grandma passed away the afternoon of the first night and my Mom kind of pushed me to go to get my mind off of things, and because she knew I was looking forward to it. I ended up having a panic attack which wasn't fun. Went on the third night with my gf who hated it and my mindset just wasn't in the right frame to enjoy it. Not saying they weren't good sets, but personally just wasn't in the mood for them. Also by the third night, they played way too much solo Trey.

The aforementioned Kamasi Washington show at City Winery might’ve been the only show I saw this year. Even if I saw a bunch more shows, that one would’ve been near the top of the list.

Pulp The Cure Paramore Pet Shop Boys Liz Phair
Depeche Mode was much better than I expected, so props to those old guys. Avalon Emerson, both dj and with The Charm, is probably the best newer artist I saw. I’m desperately trying to think of other current acts and I think maybe I’m just an un-hip old man now.

One of their last shows I believe since the lead singer passed a few months ago. Beck/Phoenix @ northerly Ween @ Salt Shed Black Country, New Road @ Thalia Wilco @ Metro
Coachella: Overmono, Blink-182's reunion show, The Chemical Brothers, Yung Lean, Jai Paul, Alex G P4k: MJ Lenderman, Soul Glo Riot Fest: Yard Act, Turnstile, Jehnny Beth, Death Cab doing Transatlanticism, The Cure

I don't really rank shows by the best, anymore.
so here's the trapper keeper for 2023 chronologically:
tk 2023 james marlon magas, snooper. meatwave. molly lewis [whistler], weyes blood. the waco brothers. daoui (angel bat dawid + oui ennui), hermeto pascoal. mr. blotto, dead and company (from outside Wrigley). joe nichols. shab, nick osin, heather small. royal & the serpent, the academy is (from outside Wrigley). samepage, breland, caroline jones, paris paloma, autograph, radkey, vixen, deer tick, avett brothers. dj mackie, iration, rebelution. the hecks, dj heather, james curd. the service. ariel zetina, palm, rachika nayar, lucrecia dalt, florist, jockstrap, soul glo. the astronomers, post sex nachos, jackie hayes. charlotte sands. susan voelz introducing cedric burnside with billy branch, vieux farka toure, with ugochi nwaogwugwu. dj kid cut up, grouplove, pat benatar (from outside Wrigley). lawrence, jonas brothers (from outside Wrigley). modern english. chico freeman with george freeman, mike allemana, yron israel, thaddeus tukes, avery sharpe, and margaret murphy-webb. ron carter and foursight (payton crossley, jimmy green, donald vega). subhi, bela fleck, shakti (john mclaughlin, zakir hussain, selvaganesh vinayakram, ganesh rajagopalan, shankar mahadevan). slique jay adams, megan mcneal, epmd. pinkshift. total chaos, pool kids, enola gay with jenny beth, plosivs, snapcase, corey feldman, enter shikari, spitalfield, steve ignorant band / crass, frank turner & the sleeping souls, death grips, eshu tune, sleep token, insane clown posse. finch, gorilla biscuits, the mars volta, godspeed you! black emperor. taylor rae, john craigie. josh berman and ben lamar gay, nikki giovanni and javon jackson, jeff chan and suwan choi. forest management, tangerine dream. ann wilson and the tripsetters. the dreamtree shakers. dusk, mike viola. chelsea handler.
the better half and I are done w/ shows for the year, unless we win some tix from do312, and the most likely show of the ones we've entered (due to how few people have entered) is bill gaither, who I last saw as a special guest at the 1994 Chicago Gospel Festival. I don't really go to CCM shows, but Gaither is 87, and I don't know how long it'll be before he meets Moses.

Wilco at the Riv Brandi Carlisle at Evolution Fest Bully at Off Broadway Wilco at Stifel Theatre Queens of the Stone Age at St. Louis Music Park Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at Chesterfield Amphitheater My Morning Jacket at Stifel Theatre

Only one show I saw this year involved 10 minutes of the absolute worst guitar solo I've ever seen punctuated in chapters by a firework being shot off and missing yet still destroying various floating "ufos" so I'm gonna have to say Kiss @ Allstate Arena

tommy thayer is no ace frehley. am I right, rango420? He is not. However less offensive Eric Singer doing "Beth" The solo highlight may have been the Gene Simmons bass solo where he never gripped the bass and instead just hit it 5 or 6 times while making a cartoon spooky face until blood started pouring out of his mouth

Rango basically validated all my reasons for avoiding KISS after Ace & Peter left (again). I had never seen them before and legitimately had a blast but this time you could tell they were not lying that it is the last tour I'm sure it was still a fun show, but after seeing the real thing I just couldn't justify paying to see a watered down product. I would probably have been willing to go for free but def would have walked out before watching Eric Singer sing Beth.
