I, for one, is happy about this outcome.
Mind you, Amelie (of which this movie reminds me) is in my top 10
*swoon*

Neader shits on a movie and it wins Best Picture. Fitting. I'm never coming back.

yep about as middle of the road decent pick as they could've made so i guess that's fine. shame 3B didnt run away with it like it should have but so it goes. glad frances and sam won at least.
also yay deakins!
no real complaints other than most of the performances and jokes weren't great (sufjan was neat tho) but i expect that at this point.

I don't get how The Shape of Water is really that safe or middle of the road of a choice. The Academy basically never awards Best Picture to science fiction/fantasy. Other than Return of the King, I can't think of any other Best Picture winner in that genre. Not only that, but it's pretty coded commentary on the current political climate.
If you ask me, a redemptive story about straight white people would have been a much safer choice.

GDT winning is a pretty crazy move given his overall career but tSoW is a very safe film relative to most of his creations and compared to the themes that other films that were nominated tried to tackle this year. it's a love story with a monster and as many have pointed out, it's been done several times before.

A mute, an old gay man, and a black woman save a fish monster. On paper it is bananas this film won.
On the other hand, the film is very much about the power of golden-era Hollywood movies. So... yeah. Safe-ish. They split the difference.
I am very happy for the film and for GDT. I do think it is deserving of the award and rises above its obvious cliches.

It's safe relative to the rest of his oeuvre. That I'll give you.
However, to say that TSOW is simply a love story with a monster is to miss the point. It's also a commentary on the othering of those who are different in society, and how those "others" are treated by society at large, from relationships between individuals to individuals versus the government. It manages to address race, homosexuality, disability, and, um...bestiality.
I know people have their favorites, but come on.

(there's only 1 or 2 nominees that i would've been disappointed with winning this year tho) ultimately just very cool to see Del Toro's hard work pay off after so many years of awesome batshit crazy stuff.

I enjoyed the Oscars overall. Loved Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph's comedic riffing, reminded me of Richard Pryor.

Octavia Spencer's character is. I think Richard Jenkins and Sally Hawkins get more to do though and have dimension to them.

It isn't 100% a great, excusable thing, but I cut GDT plenty of slack with caricatures because he traffics so heavily in fairy-tales. Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth have the same issue, I'd argue. He gets away with a lot in this one because it is filtered through both his direction and the fairy-tale Richard Jenkins' character writes.

I guess that's the issue - he's working within this framework, with these stock characters, and doesn't do anything unexpected with it.

Octavia and Michael play the same roles in everything they’ve been in for like the last decade.
Movie was good but was essentially just woman fucks fish with stock character plus some golden era Hollywood glitz thrown in

Octavia and Michale play the same roles in everything they’ve been in for like the last decade. Well, in the case of Octavia Spencer, I'm not sure that's all entirely her fault. I think sassy black friend is a stereotype that writers have a hard time letting go of.
