I'm not convinced this band exists outside of a boardroom tbh

I know Brain and I usually have each other's backs, but I think they are just kind of inoffensive/fine. I am sure they are competent live performers which frankly is something they have on most acts who play pitchfork in a typical year, boring albums aside. I will leave early no matter what.

I'm not convinced this band exists outside of a boardroom tbh This take is silly. I know the former editor of the Austin indie newspaper and he's a freak and likes weird stuff and has been praising this band for years. Not saying they're good but they've been toiling for years, paying dues. Also one of their new songs I'd say is borderline good and if I could remember the name I'd tell ya.

They’re fine. They’re to soul what the The Black Keys are to blues music, minus the first couple years where TBK were a little rawer. I’d go see them if it was Lolla. But they remain a baffling choice for a fest whose namesake pub doesn’t even cover them.
Also, it was weird when they got nominated for like 6 Grammy’s out of nowhere. Hence the “boardroom” jokes. No doubt they have a following, esp. in their hometown Austin. But these guys unquestionably have a monster of an industry PR machine behind them.

Mostly I’m just begging Black Pumas fans to listen to the Stax catalogue instead.

They are fine. My dad dragged me to one their shows at Salt Shed because he had an extra ticket and it was a decent set. Have no need to see them again though.

They are an inoffensive band that makes the pitchfork lineup look like a fucking joke from the first two words on the poster

Like, how many people who actually ever listened to Daydream Nation start to finish are people who would listen to this year's headliners? I think that number is extremely low.

Same fest booked R Kelly as a headliner so maybe we're overreacting.

ultraV, I have never listened to Daydream Nation at all, but did see SY twice before they split, and have seen CRJ, Jessie Ware, Alanis, Brittany, De La, and Rosenstock. At lolla 2010, I a former colleague insisted we check out Dawes, instead of the XX, so no Jamie XX for me so far. Okay--but you see just about everyone, which makes you atypical (and part of the "extremely low" number I mentioned). Also, I think it's different to see someone in concert than it is to regularly listen to them for enjoyment. Like, you've seen all those people...but are they all people whose music you would choose to listen to whenever you happen to be listening to music? Furthermore, are they all people who you would seek out and see at their own shows and not just check out at a festival where they happen to be playing? I was talking about this with a friend earlier. If we traveled back to 1995, we would have to really work hard to find someone who listened to Daydream Nation who also liked Alanis Morissette. Back in 1995, the only people I knew of who liked Alanis and had any exposure to Sonic Youth (through their opening slot for REM) thought Sonic Youth were absolutely horrible and couldn't believe anyone would ever listen to them.

but...what's your point here? you'd also have to "work really hard" to find someone who listened to "alt rock" AND hip-hop and rap.

but...what's your point here? The point is how different (and lame) the festival has become. The same festival that booked Sonic Youth to play Daydream Nation now has Alanis Morissette, someone who many of us were rolling our eyes at in the 90s. And no, you would not have to work hard to find people who listened to "alt rock" and hip hop and rap in the 90s. Look at the Lollapalooza billings. Hell, a lot of A Tribe Called Quest's audience was also part of Beastie Boys' audience--they toured together a bunch of times.

First of all I feel like this thread is a personal attack on me, the Black Pumas fan. This is the same kind of bullying that got the politics thread taken down many of times.
There aren't enough words in the english language to describe the Black Pumas music, to me the first time I heard one of their big hits it was like I was finally awoken from a deep slumber.
