in other "toxic male" news from yesterday, a man called me a cvnt for asking him to leash his dog who bolted up to my dog.

RIP open seating on southwest airlines

It's been more of a cluster in recent years with how crowded flights have been - there's routinely people wandering around unwilling to accept that their only option is a middle seat. Nothing I've read has indicated a date for the change.
Also TIL that Southwest is now primarily operated by a hedge fund, so I guess also RIP to free checked bags at some point.

the end of open seating was inevitable. travel bloggers have been calling out the jetway jesus phenomenom for years and this also allows southwest to offer premium seats with more legroom. they'll be just like any other airline.

the jetway jesus phenomenom I have A-list preferred through work and nothing drives me as insane as this. The fact that they can't take an exit row seat is some consolation but it still sucks a lot when it's obvious. I'm wondering what benefit A-List will have now that early boarding won't be a plus (or whatever they call their higher tier, wouldn't make sense to call it A-List if they're not doing the ABC boarding anymore). The only other real benefit I have is being able to change my flight same day for no difference in price.

Nothing I've read has indicated a date for the change. The penultimate graf of the press release includes says further details about cabin layout and timing will be shared at Investor Day in late September. It also says that changing the cabin layout on their fleet also requires FAA approval; booking won’t be available with the new layouts until 2025.

Someone who hobbles/limps/rolls up to the gate in a wheelchair/etc, says they need priority boarding, boards first, then once they are past the gate agent and hit the jetway they're miraculously cured.

I hope they at least do a little dance and praise the lord when they start walking off the plane while a friend plays gospel music behind them.

Seems unfair, a lot of people need assistance getting through the airport but can walk the short distance onto the plane.

Seems unfair, a lot of people need assistance getting through the airport but can walk the short distance onto the plane. the issue is more than just getting on the plane. when a passenger requests wheelchair assistance, the airline arranges that on both ends. so if there are 10 people who need wheelchair assistance at the origin, then there are 10 wheelchair attendants on the jetway at the destination too. but often many of those passengers don't use the service at the destination because their goal was just to board first. many attendants are unneeded at the destination. but airports hire attendants based on the numbers they get from airlines, and then charge airlines for the attendants at each flight. so this is about resources and cost cutting, as well as assuaging other passengers. there are flights from san juan, miami, west palm beach, phoenix, etc. that routinely have 30+ passengers pre-boarding in wheelchairs and absolutely never that same number who use a wheelchair to deboard.

I was for a while a fan of the Southwest boarding policy, it seems a lot more efficient for boarding and usually led to it being quicker. But there's so many people that try to game it now that it's kind of messed it up. Also in retrospect, the free checked bags probably contributes to the easier boarding and deboarding too since people taking forever to put their carry on bag up and blocking the aisleway to do it is probably the bigger boarding problem on most planes. And I don't know how they cut down on the jetway jesus thing, you can't really make people prove they have a disability.
I hate to see them go the way of regular airlines completely though. I hope they keep the free checked bags thing

The airline doesn't arrange it, you have to request it. And if you're flying from a huge airport into a smaller one you may not need the assistance on the other end. Maybe there are a ton of really shitty people feigning disability to get a slightly better airplane seat or maybe there are other factors involved that you can't see.

And I don't know how they cut down on the jetway jesus thing, you can't really make people prove they have a disability. the fix is noting who pre-boarded with the disability group and then holding them to deboard last. but no one's going to do that.

We've been A-List and Companion Pass on SW for years. Sitting on a shit ton of miles as well.
I think the ADA fakers are a small problem. Let those fuckers sit in the first 3 rows, it's super easy to avoid the assholes that way. Family boarding is similarly abused, especially on the flights you'd expect it to be a problem (MCO).
For me the problem is seat saving. Either explicitly say that it's OK, or explicitly say it isn't (and actively prevent it). It really depends on the flight attendant on a given flight how that's going to be handled (in most cases they pretend not to see it happening and find something else to do when someone looks for assistance. I don't blame them....it's the corporate policy that sucks.)
I'm there for the exit rows, especially the two-seater. A-List always gets me the seat I want. I don't know how it'd work, but I think SW has to BLOCK someone from choosing Row 1 and all of the exit rows when they pick their seat (even if they'd make more revenue selling those seats at a premium), and save those for A-Listers. Otherwise, I'll burn the miles I have and look for other options.
I don't mind riding the Greyhound bus in the sky, but I need to be king of that bus dammit.

We're seeing Foo Fighters for the first time next week and Pretenders are the opener. I've been listening to Pretenders this morning and did not fully appreciate the amount of hits they had. Should be a fun set.

Anyone here golf? I made fun of the sport my entire life, but I got a cheap starter set and have been spending summer break going to the range a couple times a week.
Genuinely fun, relaxing, and honestly addicting. I've only played an actual round twice and I obviously suck, but it is genuinely a perfect sport.
