One of my old bosses would always read gossip websites and get overly dramatic about celebrities who chose awful names for their babies. Her logic was that if anyone's parents ever had to be put in a home, the children should get to decide what they're named there so they can take it back out on their parents if their name was awful. She was a trip. jesus, it's not cold enough to stick them in a home but then you're going to tell everyone to call them some bullshit name as well. is your old boss currently in the confirmation process to be named director of the cia?

Theres alot of weird rules to Jewish baby naming as there are weird rules to all jewish things Some of which are totally in conflict with each other. Like a firstborn son is supposed to get the name of his grandfather, except you're also not supposed to name a baby after a living person. I'm sure it made sense in Biblical times when people lived to be 40 and no one had living grandparents, but it's almost impossible now. Yeah my sister has a cool middle name and my middle name is as boring as possible because nobody was dead yet

She's really not as terrible as that makes her sound, it was just something that she'd always bring up whenever some celebrity would name their kid "Popsicle" or whatever.

In that case if it's a boy it'll probably have the kid's grandfather's name I guess, her husband's father passed when he was a kid. Huh.

Speaking of weird names I always wondered what the title of the Sponge song "Neenah Menasha" meant. Turns out it's just two towns in Wisconsin. Don't ask whyyyyyyyy....... doooooon't ask why

is charlotte still a popular jewish name because of sex and the city? Her name was Charlotte before she converted tho Speaking of weird names I always wondered what the title of the Sponge song "Neenah Menasha" meant. Turns out it's just two towns in Wisconsin. I always see that/those names on sewer lids, I figured it had something to do with that. There's a foundry there where they're made.

The Mountain Goats have inspired a burlesque/drag/variety show in New York City. With the blessing of John Darnielle himself, I Only Strip to the Mountain Goats goes down June 1 at Parkside Lounge in New York City. There will be covers, go-go dancing, and seemingly much more. Tickets can be found here, with all proceeds to benefit the National Network of Abortion Funds, legal defense funds for some of the performers, and RAINN.

Anyone find the title and thesis of that article slightly problematic? I didn't see ethnicity in the data set so I'm not sure why he's assuming this is white folks?? It's Drew Magary from Deadspin for anyone who enjoys his writing but didn't want to read this article.

I opted to remove my second (and Jewish grandpa honouring) first name from my passport, and this was one of the wisest decisions I ever made... as it allowed me to travel safely (no question asked) pretty much everywhere in the word.
Had my family name been something like "Johnson" or "Smith" I might have decided otherwise. But since I have a family name that sounds either Spanish, Arabic or Israeli, I decided to play safe by retaining only my (fairly universal/Western) first first name

Also, I can't help but think of that Freakonomics piece about the impact of first name on someone's future.... how the choice of a first name can reveal class, ethnicity, background, etc. and thus props (sadly) unconscious bias if not even outright discrimination, racism etc.
The piece was probably overly deterministic, but still

The piece was probably overly deterministic, but still The summary of every Freakonomics piece Indeed, but I have yet to see that one truly debunked. Sadly so, since I hate the very thought of any single name impacting (even remotely) a child's life by itself - especially if adding to other prejudices..

True story, when I was like 12 or 13, the album Us came out, and I checked out the tape from the library, and it completely changed my perception of what "rock music" could be. It was my favorite album for a long time. In fact, I think I'm going to fire up Spotify and listen to it today

I'm glad Us is on there too. I was introduced to that through the "Secret World Live" album (which it doesn't look like is on there)...but it opened with "Come Talk to Me" right into "Steam" and I thought both songs were so cool.
