Thank you for this! do you have any favorites from the list? hitting the library after work. It’s already been covered but Fun Home is fantastic and a really great read and I may have cried when I read it. The Persepolis books are really great as well, on the graphic novel front. Dr. Roxane Gay is in that list and pretty much everything she touches is gold. The New Jim Crowe by Dr. Michelle Alexander is not on the list I think but it’s super interesting

I've got a lot of unfinished fun ones if you want something to collaborate on that are less serialized and pretentious lol
honestly with all the terrible shit lately that keeps me up at night, at least I've been able to use the insomnia to work on something productive

The whole book is essential but the best parts are when they move to LA so keep reading Pretty sure they're there already - I'm at like 330 or so, read a lot last night (and there's so many pictures). I think Check Your Head is out now and they're just talking about learning more instruments to actually be able to play instead of sample, so obviously Ill Communication is around the corner. The scatter-brained way its told actually helps it make sense later. You can really see how all of these random points of their life intersected so they could find their voice. The Capitol Records drama is also great from their perspective.

Gonna start this one between today and the end of the weekend I'm not sure how I feel about humanizing actual white nationalist Don Black in the first chapter but I'm all in on this

chvrchbarrel you should try Gravity’s Rainbow. It takes about 100 pages to get in a rhythm and program your brain to follow, and then 2/3rds of the way through you’ll lose it again. But in a fun way

The Capitol Records drama is also great from their perspective. And it's a really obvious (albeit a little too on the nose) link that the storytelling in the book is on brand Beasties in terms of the non-linear flow. The thing I came away with the greatest appreciation for was the later projects. I thought a lot of the stuff they did from the mid 90s on was goofy and aggressively unfunny, but it's pretty clear that they found most of the rap and rock from that era to be super corny, and they were doing things mostly to entertain themselves. Lots of bands get breathless accolades on this board for being seminal influences, but the Beastie legacy on music and culture is underratedly incalculable.

Gonna start this one between today and the end of the weekend I'm not sure how I feel about humanizing actual white nationalist Don Black in the first chapter but I'm all in on this This is very much worth a read and everyone should do so I think I'm gonna read Tweedy's autobiography next

I read tweedy’s book and it was very good. Very story-teller like. The stories with mavis staples cracked me up, the stuff with jay Bennett made me have depression. Y’all should read it
I started the same Lou Reed book MMC read and I can already tell it’s going to be a sense as hell read

I'm about 50 pages into the Tweedy book and I'll probably finish it on one of these inevitable snow days.
He's a fun writer.
