The genie in the live action Aladdin movie will be played by Will Smith.
And the movie will be directed by Guy Ritchie.
Ooof.

Will Smith doing a Robin Williams impression will be "fun."
Over/under on not-so-subtle nods to Robin in the script?

I'm generally not into war movies, but I'm tempted to go for the 70mm print they're screening at Alamo.

wish there was an imax 70mm showing in illinois at all, i was shocked there wasn't. i guess the navy pier imax is still closed.
guessing then that the music box will be best standard 70mm location of the few around here?

I think the theater on Roosevelt is the only one with reserved seating which brings it to the top of my list in that regard.

Saw The Big Sick and War of the Apes over my staycation. Big Sick was good, though I didn't find the relationship between the two leads very believable. They didn't appear to me to have much chemistry. Some funny moments, overall I liked it.
War was better than I expected, and I felt it already looked really solid. Wraps up an underrated trilogy nicely.
Dunkirk still looks boring to me, and I read a review that said it has barely any dialogue in it. Undecided on it.

on one hand i don't have a strong desire to see Dunkirk because i'm not even big on war movies and i think i'm done blowing Christopher Nolan for a while after hating Interstellar.
on the other hand all the shitty things about Interstellar revolve around it being a ballless attempt at at 2001 redux so maybe going back to realism is something that would benefit Nolan and bring him back to some quality filmmaking.
idk. it getting positive reviews doesn't mean enough to me to convince me yet.

When was the last major film about the Manson murders? A quick google search suggests there was an experimental semi doc in 2003 and than 2 or 3 in the early 1970s the rest are mostly unrelated direct to dvd horor movies

idk i get what wretched saying. ive watched countless tv docs on the manson family, it's kind of played to death as a subject in american culture.
the interesting approach would be a small, nuanced film looking at them, like in the vein of elephant or something. but that's obviously not what tarantino is going to make. in fact, if it's his typical crime film schtick, it'll probably be ridiculous and over the top while also possibly having the real world effect of being insensitive to family members of those who were murdered.
could still be a good movie, but there are definite reservations to be had.

There was that David Duchovny show on NBC a couple years back. Maybe Quentin was a big fan.

few more thoughts after waking up today and still hating Covenant. -the cgi was legitimately abysmal. normally for horror/scifi i'm not put off by cheap graphics, but holy shit did the alien(s) look like shit from start to finish. completely removed any aspect of terror. -what was with the earlier scene with the ship's sails breaking apart except a blatant ripoff of Sunshine? it's such a stupid similar scenario and even had similar lines and jokes. -was there ANY connection to Prometheus other than the out-of-place flashback David had that just shows more of the evil black goo? but of course it didn't explain any of their genesis, cause, or motive. just "hey here's how this species died. fuck off." -the Weyland bit at the beginning ended up having no pertinence to anything and just comes off as useless pretension for the sake of pretension -Danny McBride trying to be serious at this point will never work for me. even more so when they put Franco in the movie for 2 minutes just because.
so you can have TWO Fassbenders in the same movie and it clearly doesn't make it any more enjoyable. sad days.

Apes, despite some absolutely bone-headed plot contrivances, was a v. enjoyable movie, and settles that trilogy as one of the better in recent memory.

Debating between going to see this or Dunkirk tomorrow. Leaning more towards Dunkirk because it's been awhile since I've seen the second apes movie and I don't feel like rewatching...even though I think the plot ended super straightforward headed into the third?

Pretty much. Dawn ended with Caesar saying that because of Koba's attack, and Dreyfus calling the military from the north, war between the two groups was inevitable.
War starts two years later, still involved in that conflict.
