It was released in 2016.

That one is iffy... it did a one week qualifying run in NY and LA in Dec 2016 and was officially released in Feb 2017.
If it had had an official release in January, where it could have been seen by more people before lists were put together, like Phantom Thread, for instance, i'd say that it would make sense as a 2016 release still, but the Feb release makes me more inclined to call it a 2017 release.
Agree? Disagree?

Considering none of this holds any tangible value I don't see the point in fighting that logic.

It never saw US release until January, so I was assuming it as a 2018 film. I feel like it would have been on more critic lists if it was being viewed as a 2017 film. I agree with this, it makes the most sense to go off of what the people here can actually see. So is that a no to Paddington?

Agree? Disagree? my only argument against counting this year would be that i don't remember if the movie is actually good or if I just remember liking it because James Baldwin is so good

I'm sure we had this discussion then, so if it cleared the bar for our 2016 lists, doesn't make much sense to allow it again.

I'm sure we had this discussion then, so if it cleared the bar for our 2016 lists, doesn't make much sense to allow it again. it's already on 4 lists for this year so i'm gonna say we didn't have that discussion, and this ruling is also baloney. edit: 2 official lists and 2 lists in this thread, apparently.

more likely that those 4 people just don't remember the decision than that it didn't happen. iasm said he had it on his 2016 list.

Casey Affleck isn't attending the Oscars, avoiding the scenario where he presents the Best Actress award.

Just send someone else up there with a sheet over them, no one will notice the difference.

Nah I think each theater for AMC reserves the right to not participate.

I watched 47 Meters Down last night. Most of the movie is actually pretty suspenseful, but the ending is lame. It's like one of those alternate endings that should've been saved for the DVD.
Girlfriend and I watched Molly's Game last weekend. Mostly very good and well-edited, but like some people have already said on here, the last 20 minutes could've been cut.

Finally got around to watching The Big Sick last night. Despite the fact that it involves the minority cliche story that I am SO tired of, I really loved it. Also was very pleasantly surprised to see that one of the comedians was a guy I know from college. I had no idea he was in it.

Nah I think each theater for AMC reserves the right to not participate. Yep I received an email from MoviePass yesterday and about 10 AMC theatres dropped out.

it sounds like moviepass pulled the service from the 10 theaters since amc isn't willing to cut them in on tickets and concessions, not the other way around.

Kurt Braunholer. As soon as I saw him on screen, I paused it and started excitedly texting one of our mutual friends. He was into shock comedy way back then. Before I had ever met him, I remember sitting behind him on the campus shuttle, and he was giving these big, wet open-mouthed kisses to his guy friends sitting on either side of him and asking them to verify whether or not he tasted like onions. (They confirmed that yes, he did taste like onions.) Then he turned around and asked me and the guys I was with "Does this make you uncomfortable?" LOL

We watched the Post last night. Not awful, but terrible pacing. I also disagree on Spielberg's take that it was a story that needed to be told. Given Streeps speech prior to the release about how important the press is these days, I have to also disagree. If anything this made me long for the days when the press was on the side of the people, unlike today where it's just mostly dogshit bc of political donors and opinions.
So while this was a groundbreaking moment in history, the film was too little. It's Oscar nominations were politically motivated obviously, and I didn't find any of the acting anything special. The positives came from seeing so many wonderful TV stars outshine the A-listers. David Cross, Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Carrie Coon, and Matthew Rhys were all great additions to the cast.
I also enjoyed the printing press shots, showing how a paper was printed. Very cool to see. Not a bad film, but definitely not Oscar worthy.

Oh my, I really liked I, Tonya. Allison Janney is a national treasure.
I remember all this stuff when it happened and never really questioned the narrative at the time. I thought the film's humanizing of Tonya was really worthwhile and well done, that cycle of abuse is a motherfucker.
