tom very easily even ignoring my general un-care for VU let alone Lou solo.
(but it's a fair comparison and i appreciate the thread to talk more about mr Waits)

I don't know enough of Waits material to really judge it, but the Velvets are one of my all time favorite bands, and the Lou Reed solo material has a lot of gems to be found. Going with Lou.

Both of these guys are stratospheric in terms of their highs and VU's influence on rock can't be underestimated. They've both made good, relevant music even as they aged. But I think Lou Reed's missteps are worse that Waits'. I saw Reed perform live once and it was just okay. Haven't seen Waits, but his performances on Letterman have generally been mesmerizing. I'll go with my gut and say Waits. Weepers & Creepers ftw.

Only one of these artists inspired Macaulay Culkin to create a pizza-themed band. Lou wins this one easy.

This is tough. I'm a big fan of both, but Waits is the coolest dude and Lou Reed was quite the asshole. Went with Tom.

I like Tom Waits' songs more. He'd probably be more fun to hang out and chat with too.
