Wait so was Basinski actually there ? He walked onstage at the end in a tuxedo and waved. He didn’t play. He was not onstage during the performance. It was basically a fairly sloppy orchestra playing adaptions of the first two parts of Disintegration Loops. Considering they literally adversitied it as WILLIAM BASINSKI with The Chicago Philharmonic and used photos of him promoting it I’m annoyed. Not too uncommon with orchestral performances. I saw Steve Reich in that same vein, an orchestra performed his music and he came out at the end. John Luther Adams too. But yeah probably should have been billed differently.

Slowdive were great, Yves pop up was incredible, actual Yves and Le1f sets looked incredible and I’m annoyed I didn’t go to them. That being said, the rest of it was enough of a downer to me that I’m just not going the rest of the weekend. I’d rather sell my tickets and avoid entering that mess again. The main staircase thing was a nightmare every time I tried to watch something on it. I really want to see Mary Lattimore but I know that unless I camp out and miss other stuff there’s no way I can catch her between sets.
The food was supposedly awful. I heard people complaint about it at two different sets and saw some stuff online too.

I enjoyed it a lot and didn't have any problems getting around, but I wasn't trying to see everyone.

I'm now thinking that I'd like to at least sample the shtshow that you and some others have mentioned. let me know via pm, facebook, or my nanatodd hotmail how much you're looking for.

I mean, I think it's a pretty cool experience to wander around the museum and see things like this between having drinks and popping in and out of auditoriums:

So is the consensus of Midwinter that it's underwhelming?

i had a great time at midwinter last night. i was in the perfect headspace to start the day with the philharmonic doing disintegration loops. they performed two pieces, the second being the main first loop of the album. the way each piece just fell apart and fell off was the same idea as the recorded work but almost fell like a whole new thing. it was a super great experience and one that you couldn't really recreate without a 15 piece orchestra.
hit the kaitlyn aurelia smith soundscape next at georgie o'keeffe's sky above clouds which was a really nice pairing. the sound could have been louder there tho.
bill callahan was really great. he was stark solo but it was so good still, awesome how he could fill the space (he was in the modern wing atrium). he ended the set with "let's move to the country" and a stunning version of "let me see the colts" which are two i really wanted to hear, so that was awesome.
tried to see daniel bachman but the "grand staircase" being the area to host the base performances was an even worse idea than i imagined it would be. i think that was the only space in the old art institute area with a bar, so naturally people without add on tickets were congregating there. and as a result, it seemed extremely unlikely that you would be able to hear the solo guitar or voice performances going on very well. ended up heading back into the galleries for the nico muhly soundscape which was by the george seurat sunday in the park painting. there was live glockenspiel being performed along with the soundscape too, super cool. spent some more time in the impressionist galleries then. since there was no music there they were basically empty which was awesome since during normal art institute hours they're packed. was able to take some time and enjoy those works.
back to the modern wing to close it out. baba stiltz was good but functioned mostly as art party backing music. however dj koze KILLED IT. he was soooo good and had such a good vibe going. about 40 minutes or so into his set he dropped "pick up" and the place went wild, it ruled. i really hope he comes back for the festival in the summer and closes the blue stage, would be perfect.
the other issue with the festival besides the staircase was drink tickets and drink prices. somehow, each drink ticket was $5 which felt like a lot. however, you could get a tecate for 1 ticket which ruled and is great price for an art museum party. what was not chill was 3 tickets or $15 for a vodka soda (ketel, but still). the high price of a cocktail was annoying but at least there was a cheap beer option.
in conclusion, the add-on and gallery soundscapes/experience was great. maybe the base area performances work better at the start or end when less people are there, but not ideal at 9pm when it's filled with people hanging out. regardless, the museum was pretty full all night and it seems like they'd probably do it again.

I actually really enjoyed it. I think some of the logistics could be improved and I’m not thrilled with paying $10 for a Heineken but it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be.
I am almost positive based on my crowd watching that something is gonna get broken in there

oh big ups to taco bell cantina in the loop being open afterward, didnt see any food in the art institute and guessing if i tried to find it it wouldn't have been $5 for a tasty taco and burrito.

It’s a power move to have a bunch of drunk people in a room full of Monet’s with little to no supervision for sure

I thought it was great too and I would definitely go back next year if they do it again. Sudan Archives was my highlight, she was fantastic. Yves Tumor was okay, sound was off on his vocals for a bit, and it was just him running around in front of a LED screen, but it ended up being good. Not sure why they said his room was sold out there was TONS of room.
Loved the soundscapes too, I spent about 15 minutes at the KAS one just chilling there.
Avb is exactly right on the drink prices and the grand staircase. We heard Daniel Bachman talking to someone while walking through the DJ Koze set, he said it felt like playing Fyre Fest there.

It’s a power move to have a bunch of drunk people in a room full of Monet’s with little to no supervision for sure this is a good point, i dont think ive ever been drunk in the art institute before which was a different way to look at all the paintings and sculptures. there were staff monitoring every gallery, though, so it's not like there was no supervision.

By 10:45 when I got up there they only appeared to have people in the soundscape rooms. I imagine lots had cleared out by that point but as someone who was babysitting my friend that evening (shout out Mookie for playing along) it was going through my mind
