We are flying into Madrid, but plan on seeing as much of the country as possible. We would like to avoid renting a car, I've been told they have bullet trains that can get you to all the major cities, so that's the plan for now. We'll spend the next month or so working out the details but Barcelona, Granada, Toledo, and Sevilla are all on the must see list.

My best friend is no longer moving to Peru, so the Fall Machu Picchu trip is off for now - especially as Ive just started a new jon.
But a common buddy of us is moving to Ethiopia this Fall, so I think we'll try go visit him together in the Spring. Really hoping for this one trip to finally happen (had to cancel it last Fall)

which travel bags do we use? i'm looking for a new one that can work as a backpack/carry-on for either weekenders or long trips. i've looked at at least a dozen options that all seem fine but nothing's standing out as a clear favorite.

I've used a New Outlander backpack for quick trips and commuting around the area. It's cheap, durable and it can be folded down into an internal pocket.

Anyone been to Chattanooga? Thinking about heading out Saturday and doing some hiking then and Sunday at Prentice Cooper.
So yeah, any recommendations?

^I am also interested in this as well as Oakland recs. I'll be in downtown Oakland all next week, I'll probably go into San Fran for a night or two, I think my place is right by a train that goes straight to it

Anywhere we go we will find good beer in San Francisco.

Might've been - I think I had been mentioning my trip to San Diego around that time, and I went to that location.

One of my close friends from high school is a Ph.D. student at Berkeley. Our favorite spots were: Breweries/bars: SF | Cellarmaker - maybe the best brewery experience of my life SF | Zeitgeist - bar with tons of craft beer on draft blasting metal/punk OAK | Cafe Van Kleef - bar specializing in grapefruit drinks only OAK | Woods Brewery - very good, small brewery with extremely chill taproom Restaurants: SF | El Farolito - Mission burritos, this is an absolute must. Get the super carnitas SF | La Taqueria - the other famous burrito place, equally as good SF | Nopalito - Great, somewhat upscale Mexican. Spent like $30 per person I think. SF | Hong Kong Lounge - Dim sum in Richmond. Go here for lunch if you can and you will not regret it. SF | Garaje - Mexican-American fusion garage themed place. Cheap, greasy, pretty amazing. Carne asada fries. Berkeley | East Bay Spice Company - Great Indian, kind of chic and small Berkeley | La Mission - Super cheap classic California Mexican food Berkeley | Jupiter - Awesome outdoor courtyard bar with pizza and lots of interesting beers Didn't eat in Oakland sadly. Plenty of great places in SF I didn't make it to that I'm sure are amazing (Swan Oyster, House of Prime Rib)

Find my post in this thread from earlier this year and add Flour + Water, Tartine Manufactory, and the greyhound at Cafe Van Kleef.

NOLA next month for a wedding.
I've stayed in the French Quarter before and wouldn't mind doing it again I suppose but I'd prefer to be somewhere more...hip (fucking hate using that word) and less touristy/obnoxious, suggestions?
also restaurants and bars are always welcome too.

Marigny/Bywater are just up the way and are walkable to French Quarter. Great spots to stay and great food.

There's a lunch buffet place called Lil Dizzy's that's amazing. it has the best gumbo ive ever had plus the fried chicken is really really good. I keep recommending it to people and no one ever listens to me but its seriously the best. it closes around 2 every day though.
I've always stayed around the French Quarter because I'm a lame tourist or something. I stayed at this place one time, I really like the location of it, its close enough to a lot of stuff to walk but also not in the middle of everything so its pleasant and quiet- rbgh.com/ The kind of back part of the French quarter gets out of that stuff a little bit.

I stayed in St. Roch and the Irish Channel the last couple times, those were nice and more neighborhoody. Not a far walk or bike ride from the Quarter. The Bywater and/or Marigny are probably safer and a little more built up than St. Roch at this point.

As much as I love living in (and travelling to) a city, I've got to say that I'm also growing more and more fond of trips to nature spots
