Oh man Pink Door is great. We walked in and had an incredible lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It’s pricey but I loved our meal at Butcher’s Table (steakhouse). I also liked Carlile Room and Serious Pie (both are Tom Douglas restaurants). Oh and we had an outstanding breakfast at Lola (another Tom Douglas spot); Im sure their dinner is equally excellent.

Spinasse if you need more Italian. Off Alley is dope if you want to put in the effort. They’re basically walk-in only and have 12 whole seats. Sushi Kashiba is incredible, but pricey. They are usually ‘fully booked’ but it’s generally easy to walk in as long as you don’t mind bar seating. Betsutenjin is a really good traditional ramen counter and they’re open late but they only do like one type of ramen and some gyoza. Cornelly and Blotto are both extremely good pizza options. Cornelly is easy enough to grab - worse case scenario they do carryout. Blotto is walk-in only, first-come first-serve. If you just want a slice, Big Mario’s and Hot Mama’s are cheap and good for what they are but I wouldn’t go out of the way for them.

I would say the hack for this is to go to Bateau or Boat Bar (BB is the cocktail bar attached to Bateau), which are also Renee Erikson joints that are much easier to get into. Excellent steaks plus they get basically the same raw bar selection as Walrus.

Booked the flights for a little northeast trip this summer. Flying into Boston the evening of July 1st and staying until July 5th, including going to a Red Sox game on the 4th. I've never been and pretty excited to check that out, specially as a bit of a history nerd. Then renting a car and heading up towards Acadia National Park, we got a really neat place just outside of Bar Harbor that looks really neat and going to do two days around there and in the park.
Then based on doable flights in the area (we have a companion pass so limited to Southwest), decided to book a flight home from Portland, Maine and figured we could do a night there. That was kind of an afterthought because we heard Portland is cool and the flight from there really works, but for some reason all hotels actually in the city there are averaging around $500-600 for the night. I tried looking and can't find any events going on, it seems that's really just the weekend price to stay in the city because I checked some other weekends. Truly kind of blowing my brain, I really hope that city is cool and worth it because my glance is having a very hard time justifying that price when this wasn't really the key of the trip. There's some hotels right outside the city that are closer to $350 for the night and might just do that, but still feels like a lot. Almost talked ourselves into doing Manchester, NH for the last day because not only is the flight from there cheaper but the hotels are significantly cheaper, but it also just doesn't look like as cool a city.
anyways, very excited for the Boston + Acadia National Park/Bar Harbor part of the trip. trying to justify this Portland day in my head
If anyones been to Portland (Maine) I would be curious to an opinion of if it's worth it, I really don't know all that much about it besides a friend off-hand mentioning they heard it was a really cool city. We'd have about 24 hours there

I haven't spent much time in Portland itself but am hoping to explore a lil more when we're in Maine at the end of July. It is just fucking expensive at high season - like why is a La Quinta $330/night midweek. Is it worth it? Idk, but I've heard a lot of great stuff about their restaurant (and bakery) scene and it looks super cute and easy to walk around. I think we will probably end up staying in Brunswick where my dude grew up which is a cute lil college town and only a half hour from Portland, and just driving in to do stuff during the day/evenings. Might do a hotel on the night we're seeing Billy though, haven't decided.
We only have a day or two in Acadia but v excited for that - staying right on the water on Long Pond. Definitely preferring that splurge over a $400 Days Inn or whatever in Portland lol

Sitting at the bar at White Dog brewery in Boise. They have a refrigerated strip (covered in “snow”) for you to set your beer on to keep it cold. Have never seen that before. It’s cool.

I asked my friend for his recs - he's a Detroit native (who recently moved to Denver, actually): Michigan & Trumbull (favorite pizza in the city) Didn't have an opportunity to do much in Detroit outside of grabbing dinner, but this was one of the best pizzas I've ever had. Housed an entire one by myself and was complimented by the server lol. Really great spot. Thank your friend for me. Lansing is an incredibly boring city. Ann Arbor is a cool campus town. I was able to walk around downtown Detroit a bit, but most of the stores were closed by the time I got in Sunday afternoon. It rained or snowed practically the entire time I was in the state, so hell yeah Midwest.

Looking for hotel recommendations in Manhattan. My friend’s parents are coming to visit in the summer for four days and they’re looking to buy the NYC Sightseeing Pass. Her pops is not very mobile, so they want to stay someplace central. I never have people stay in Manhattan when they come to visit so I have zero ideas. But if I remember correctly, some of y’all have stayed in Manhattan while visiting. mookie ? dij22 ? Maybe some others I’m not recalling off the top of my head.

Maybe some others I’m not recalling off the top of my head. any time I have stayed there, I pretty much completely based my decision off which hotel was most reasonably priced closest to at least one subway stop. I don’t remember the exact hotels, we stayed at 53rd and 3rd once (easy to remember from the Ramones song) and once near the Ed Sullivan theater. I forget where we stayed the other times

Only time I've stayed in Manhattan I stayed in the Financial District. We were near Trinity Church and that was really the only thing notable about it. Tell your friends to stay in Brooklyn.

I’d normally have visitors stay with me or nearby in Brooklyn, but these are elderly folks from Germany who aren’t going to be down for taking the subway into Manhattan every day to do their touristy stuff.

I stay in Manhattan a few times a year for conferences at the Marriott Marquis and the NY Hilton Midtown. Both touristy hotels that would probably work for older folks. Same with Sheraton NY Times Square.

Looks like it would be out of the way, but if your travels take you near/through Florence/Muscle Shoals, Bunyan’s Bar-B-Que is the place to go. I have a couple of vendor contacts in Chattanooga; I’ll ask them for a few recos.
