Anyone have any strong opinions on 2-3day under 5 hour chicago road trip. Indianapolis/detroit out of question. Too close to to do like teh beach-y places. Thinking between like Dubuque, Des Moines, Cincinnati. Have done St. Louis, Milwaukee, Madison.

Des Moines and Cincy were good during fest weekends, but I don't know how interesting they'd be otherwise. Although the trip to Des Moines would be worth it for Fong's. Maybe Minneapolis?

Des Moines can be fun. Good food and drinks, and there might be a show worth checking out at Wooly’s or the Gaslamp. If you end up going that route lmk and I can throw out specific food /drink options.

i'll be in montgomery, birmingham, huntsville, and chattanooga later this week. any suggestions for things to eat or do in those towns and between them? Looks like it would be out of the way, but if your travels take you near/through Florence/Muscle Shoals, Bunyan’s Bar-B-Que is the place to go. I have a couple of vendor contacts in Chattanooga; I’ll ask them for a few recos. Chattanooga recos: • Alleia (nice Italian restaurants; reservation recommended) • Main Street Meats (local butcher/restaurant with wonderful steaks, burger, etc.) • The Boathouse (seafood/American restaurant with beautiful views of the river...a local favorite) • The Daily Ration (excellent breakfast/brunch) • Bluegrass Grill (another great breakfast option) • Hunter Art Museum (located on a bluff with great views of the river) • Rembrandt's Coffee Shop (located in the art district) • Tennessee Aquarium (one of the best in the country) • Incline Railway (takes you up the side of Lookout Mountain to Rock City) • Rock City/Ruby Falls (a couple of touristy favorites) They also mentioned there’s lots of hiking in the area.

Yes, the Aquarium, Incline Railway, and Rock City/Ruby Falls are great. Can't remember anything special about any restaurants, but Chattanooga is nice.

i'll be in montgomery, birmingham, huntsville, and chattanooga later this week. any suggestions for things to eat or do in those towns and between them? Weirdly I have a bunch of Huntsville recs (from a friend who grew up there and now splits her time between there and Brooklyn): Stove House — Old stove factory with a lot of restaurants, a brewery, and sometimes live music. Campus 805 — Refurbished school building with a variety of restaurants & breweries The Camp — Outdoor bar with food truck garden and live music Salt Factory Pub Kamado Ramen Orion — New amphitheater that is booking some really good shows There's a lot of nice hiking trails. Lowe Mill — The largest privately owned arts facility in the south. With a focus on visual artists and makers, this historic textile mill has been redeveloped into 152 working studios for over 200 artists, makers, and independent businesses, 7 galleries, a theatre, a community garden, and event spaces. Downtown spots all within walking distance of one another: Domaine South Melt The Standard Social Market Harrison Brothers Hardware — General Store on the square founded in 1897, selling locally made arts & fine crafts, kitchen items & classic toys. Moe's BBQ Jack Brown's Beer & Burger Joint Rhythm on Monroe — Nice rooftop if the weather is nice The Poppy and Parliament The Bottle Stella's — Cocktail bar Commerce Kitchen Mazzara's Vinoteca

I stay in Manhattan a few times a year for conferences at the Marriott Marquis and the NY Hilton Midtown. Both touristy hotels that would probably work for older folks. Same with Sheraton NY Times Square. 2nd the Hilton Midtown. I have also stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Manhattan/Chelsea and one other place near there that I can't remember. I've also stayed in the financial district and Long Island City but that will have more of a commute to the touristy stuff

My wife and I have been to Cabo a few times - once around the same time that you're planning. It's beautiful and Los Cabos is a really cool town to wander around, but don't have high expectations of getting in the ocean with how rough the surf typically is.

yeah i heard we're actually not allowed to get in the ocean where our resort is. oh well, views and a pool are sufficient for me.

I remember thinking the danger was being exaggerated, but that was the most worried I've been getting in the water and I wasn't even that far out. Really crazy undertow.

For some reason I thought Cabo was close to Cozumel, but I guess I was thinking of Cancun.

In Vancouver for the first time in 6(!) years. Even though the weather is gray, I still feel like I could absolutely live here.

I'm hitting up Baltimore for a couple of Guardians games next week. Any recommendations? Definitely want to see the American Visionary Art Museum.

Definitely want to see the American Visionary Art Museum. 36th st in hampden is a neat block a bit outside downtown. there are several good eateries, especially dylan's for oysters and the charmery for ice cream. there's also a weird little shop called bazaar around the corner that has a lot of taxidermy stuff, antique medical supplies, and occult books. it's worth a drop-in if you're up there.

Find someplace to get pit beef. Never heard of this before but now I'm obsessed Frequently mentioned as a B’more delicacy of choice on The Wire. I’ve yet to have the pleasure. Try the lake trout, too; neither trout, nor from a lake!

yeah i heard we're actually not allowed to get in the ocean where our resort is. oh well, views and a pool are sufficient for me. You are able to go into the ocean in town. The public beaches are indistinguishable from the private beaches out there so if your hotel doesn't have any beachfront property you can either grab a cheap beach chair at Walmart or just pay someone on the beach. Our hotel had a shuttle to downtown which was nice because seems like the taxi/uber situation out there is annoying. We did a buy 2 get 1 free adventure tours with Cabo Adventures which seemed to be the most respected but not expensive one in town and would recommend the Zip Line/ATV experience and the 'luxury sunset cruise'. whale watching tour was also very cool but we got much closer to the whales on the sunset cruise Got the stomach/water bug in Mexico City before we got to Cabo so no recommendations on food really but from what I gathered we didn't miss all that much.
