Anyone have any strong opinions on 2-3day under 5 hour chicago road trip. Indianapolis/detroit out of question. Too close to to do like teh beach-y places. Thinking between like Dubuque, Des Moines, Cincinnati. Have done St. Louis, Milwaukee, Madison. Dubuque was really cool, pretty and low key. Was nice to go to a place where after an active 48 hours it felt like nothing really notable was not done. did you do the funicular? i thought that was v cool.

Had a fun day of farmers market/breakfast->funicular->Aquarium->winery->Casino/bowling->nice dinner->Dwight yoakam concert->bars which is really something you can only do when the entirety of your city is basically 2 miles long also spent a day hiking in mines of spain and doing the cave tour which were both about about as pretty (and hilly) as the Midwest gets.

i should have suggested a booze cruise on the mighty mississippi. my bro went to college there and it's cheap enough that he and his friends would do it weekly. i've done it a time or two and it is indeed midwest pretty. apparently george rr martin lived there and based some game of thrones shit on there? some nerdy shit like that.

I saw the baseball bat used in the film FIST.

Heading to San Diego with the family next week. Kids have never been to the ocean - while at first I was kind of excited to try to go to the beach, it's not going to go above 70 while we're there (still lovely weather, but still), so that may not be in the cards. We're staying within walking distance of the zoo and I've found a ton of restaurants/breweries that are kid friendly. Just generally very excited to be back in southern Cal.

Never heard of this before but now I'm obsessed Frequently mentioned as a B’more delicacy of choice on The Wire. I’ve yet to have the pleasure. Try the lake trout, too; neither trout, nor from a lake! Stopped by Chap's Pit Beef right as it opened yesterday on my way to the Amtrak station - amazing. Like if an Arby's sandwich was roasted/smoked with the care of an A-tier BBQ place. Also, it was a little stand in a strip club parking lot. Hell yes.

my parents (late 70s) are talking about a possible iceland trip next year. i know some boarders have been there. my dad is getting over a broken ankle and my stepmom has a heart condition that fatigues her even just going up a staircase. is it possible to do a proper iceland trip with those limitations?

Absolutely. I'm sure there are hikes out there but the four days I went and all the tours I did were mainly "we're going to drive 20 minutes to look at this geyser. you'll have 20 minutes to walk around and explore the area." over and over again.

I can let you know at the end of next month, I’m traveling with some older people with some similar mobility restrictions

Yeah - this. I found Iceland to be remarkably accessible for folks of all skill levels / mobility restrictions. Loads of waterfalls / geysers / black sand beaches that are ground level, they can do puffin and whale watching tours, Reykjavik is pretty in-and-of itself, and the best part of the Iceland is all the hot springs, which should be no problem either. They won't be able to do the glaciers or more volcanic inland hiking, but there's plenty to do for a beautiful 4 days without that.

Yeah they'll be fine. I can recommend some smaller tours if they don't want to be on a bigger bus.

This Southwest sale going on is pretty good. Booked my travel for the rest of the year. Already had a flight to Denver booked for MMJ at Red Rocks but that was cheaper so I got a $120 flight credit out of it, and also booked extended weekend trips for Nashville in October and Los Angeles in December. With our companion pass, only spent about $700 total for roundtrip flights for all 3 trips for tickets for both me and her. not bad

Southwest out of Terminal 5 continues to be terrible. At least I found a spot at the bar at Frontera.
Oh forgot to post about this - we landed at 1:50 on Monday and didn’t get off the plane until 4:15. Only received two updates from the cockpit and it was related to the airport not assigning the plane a gate. Had a front row seat to other planes landing and effortlessly taxiing over to their gates. I’m going to insist that work not book me into this terminal until construction is finished. Even then I’d probably prefer Midway.

Sitting in the United terminal waiting for the plane to Tokyo. Hoping to not be around here that much over the next few weeks. I assume monastery will keep the 70s thread bumping and many a tour I cannot buy tickets to will be announced.
My sister moved there in 2018 and has been teaching ESL since then. She’s coming back probably full time at the end of august. My brother and I were originally supposed to go out and visit at the end of the Olympics in 2020, which obviously did not happen. It’s a little surreal to finally be doing this trip which I kind of figured would never happen.
As the Wu-Tang Clan once said, “konnichewa, bitches”

Tweet there is a shop in the basement of tokyo station that (often) has all of the regional kitkats, in case you are looking for a particular flavor and can't find it in the usual shops. also, the ramen and sushi will spoil you for life once you come back to the US. enjoy!

My daughter loved Last of Us, now I just saw that Universal Studios Hollywood is going to have a Last of Us Haunted House in September and October. Stupid school and whatnot will get in the way, but man that would be fun

Found a small hotel on Frenchmen with an incredible jazz band tonight and hung out there for an hour or so. Also just grabbed a ticket to Fleet Foxes tomorrow night for cheap. Also also found out I have zero conference responsibilities on Thursday and my flight isn't until 7:30. Also also also made a lunch reservation at Cochon that day.
Pretty solid trip.

It's pretty damn hot. Glad I packed a bunch of clothes that don't make it completely obvious that I'm sweating profusely.

Pretty solid trip. i had lunch at Cochon last Summer while deathly hungover and it was solid and brought me some life, solid choice. I don't know if this is your vibe but the WW2 museum is walking distance from there and it's a really neat museum if you want to kill a few hours after lunch before your flight

Finally booked our trip for the year, we have a pretty small time frame to work with, so we're just going to go back to Seattle at the end of this month since the kids really want to go back, and this time we'll be able to go to Vancouver too. Works for me.
Debating a quick trip to FLA to see the in-laws too, flights are super super cheap to Orlando, but might still end up in Fort Laud as usual. I'm leaving that up to the Mrs.

If you’d like, I can dig up the name of the peel and eat place I made my in-laws go to in Ft Lauderdale back in January. It was unbelievably good and also they have really bad live music

Works for me. PNW in summer is one of my favorites. i haven't been to seattle in several years now, but been to vancouver a few times recently. i'll suggest nero waffles for breakfast. the kids will probably love it. fat mao noodles is a big hit in my household too. and if your family likes indian food, vij's is a staple. the owner was on canada's shark tank equivalent, dragons' den, as one of the dragons. he walks around the restaurant talking to patrons all night sometimes. the food is also really good.
