Tomorrow morning we're flying out to LA, staying there for four days or so. Driving up to the Grand Canyon for a day, then heading over to Vegas for two days. No real plans in LA, just going to see Sufjan on Thursday. I think we're just hitting the beach a couple of times and doing the typical tourist stuff otherwise.
I haven't been out to LA in probably 25 years, and haven't been to Vegas in like 12 years, so it should be a good time. We're staying at the Paris in Vegas.

Hey alady: The person I mentioned got back to me. I'll paste in the note she sent to me for Sleeping Bear Dunes recs for around that area: Bike the trail from Empire to Glen Arbor. Glen Arbor is cute but touristy like Mackinac Island so it is kind of fun and busy, but is expensive to shop there. There is also Cherry Republic in GA that is yummy and does wine tasting with beautiful gardens. There are wine, beer, and spirit tasting rooms everywhere now....I don't even know most of them. The beach in Empire is good. North Bar beach (between Empire and Glen Arbor) was a special miraculous secret but is now fucked by too many people. It is probably still nice if you get there early to get a parking spot. There are hiking trails everywhere. Kayaking in Glen Arbor is good. Dune Climb or Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is definitely worth it. Lots to see and you can get out in places and hike around. A lot of people like Arts but it is really expensive for a nostalgic bar. North of Glen Arbor is Leland....similar to GA but with Fishtown (a 1900s heritage park featuring fishing shanties, docs, etc.). North of Leland....a....ways.....is the lighthouse. Meh... If you take M22 north and then M204 east you will go to Suttons Bay rather than Leland. Tandem Ciders is cider tasting in Suttons Bay. Suttons Bay has a good family beach. It's in a bay so not so wavy. I like Eddies Village Inn for casual food and outdoor beers. Hoplot looks like a lot of fun. We love to do the bike ride from Suttons Bay to Traverse City. There is a bus that will take you out or back if you don't want to do the round trip. Kayaking the Platte River....AWESOME

I can not wait to get to LA tomorrow. I just realized that I haven't left Chicago since February.

I'm also flying out to California but not for the same reason as most of the board. I have a wedding in Sonoma, which will be my first time out there. Planning on drinking all of the wine this weekend.

Cali is pretty awesome this weekend. We're now sitting at a cafe next to Santa Monica pier. I think Zola Jesus is playing here tonight, but I have to miss her to see Sufjan

Side note mookie I am pretty jealous of your trip to the La Brea tar pits. Been lowkey obsessed with them since I was a kid.

Went to Universal Studios today, didn't know they only have one actual coaster, and it was a small one. They had like 5virtual ones, and those were fine. Nearly had to puke after the Simpsons one though.
Lots of stuff for the kids at least, they lloved it

Lake George is so goddamn beautiful and relaxing. Saw the Milky Way on Friday night for the first time in forever. No mobile phone service around where we were, either, which was quite nice. Seriously contemplating how we might be able to afford a place up there. They have high-speed internet available, so I could theoretically be there for the entire summer and telecommute during the days.

Northern California is amazing. It is very easy to understand what all the hype is about.
Just for fun I was looking up home values as I passed them in both Sonoma and San Francisco, it was also very easy to understand why I don't live out there.

Montreal is an incredible city. Would love to make a return trip. Big thanks to alady for recommending Le Plateau Mont Royal as a base spot.

I am officially in love with Mongolia and the Mongols
In fact, that trip is going straight to my top 3 - and I've travelled to over 60 countries.
Can't recommend this country enough (except perhaps on the food front)

Leaving tomorrow to spend the weekend with the kids in Omaha. No, I am not punishing them. My ex has taken them to 4 Corners, Yellowstone, and DC this year and they wanted to take trip with me. I can't afford to fly them anywhere since a big chunk of my money is going to my ex so apparently she can take them on cool trips. I was left with doing something different but driveable and affordable. Besides the zoo, SAC museum and a riverboat ride, any recommendations for Omaha that are okay with a 12 & 10 year old?

I've only ever stopped in Omaha on the way to Chicago. The Joslyn Art Museum is supposed to be pretty good, though. Otherwise maybe check out a minor league baseball game?

They are home Saturday night. The oldest would be interested. I'll have to shovel food at the youngest however to keep him from complaining about how boring it is. So that is a maybe.

I can't speak for whatever they do in Omaha specifically, but minor league parks are usually have more non-baseball shit going on to entertain kids/families. You may have to do less shoveling than you thought.

Yeah, I was aware of that. Very jealous of those who got to do it. I'm still so upset that Disney is basically destroying what Hollywood Studios stands for here and that I'll never get to ride this thing again. As I said in another thread when the news dropped, I've cried coming off this ride twice, like legitimately cried. I can't think of any other ride that's happened on. Ugh.
