Went to Khmai Cambodian Fine Dining yesterday and it was one of my favorite meals in years. Beef skewers might be the most delicious dish I've ever had.
Great drinks and very reasonable prices. Highly highly recommend.

We picked up a Gino's East frozen deep dish pizza the other day and it's truly one of the worst things I've ever eaten. Easily the worst frozen pizza I've ever had.

Yeah - deep dish does not really work frozen. The Lou Malnati's versions are probably the best of the bunch, but even then, not great. To be fair, though, Gino's East is not good from the restaurant, either imo

Virtue definitely lived up to the hype, we ordered basically the whole menu and the only disappointment was the fried green tomatoes. But then I'm not sure I actually like fried green tomatoes to begin with.
Highlights of the highlights were the duck liver mousse toast with roasted strawberries, the shrimp, crawfish and grits (oh god those grits) and the cornbread, which was just heavenly.

Yesterday's pasta bag from Eataly on TooGoodToGo was a pound of fig and goat cheese ravioli and a pound of spinach and ricotta ravioli for $9.99--normally approximately $32 worth of pasta--so today's lunch is the fig and goat cheese ravioli with butter. Would recommend, especially if you can score some on TooGoodToGo.

First time at Girl and the Goat last night. We lucked into a table after my buddy accidentally booked a reservation in the wrong state. Truly epic meal.

I got dinner last night from a new place near us, Porkito. Was pretty tasty, we split the Chi-lly (I subbed pulled chicken) and the Cubano and both had a lot of flavor. Their elotes were a little weird/soupy and the tots were okay, tasted a little greasy. Hope they work out the kinks (they've only been open a couple weeks). I'd like to try some of the other stuff on the menu, the Big Green is calling my name.

Colorado is the sixth Michelin Guide destination in the United States, following New York City, California, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Florida and is set to be released later this year. Formed through a partnership between Michelin and the Colorado Tourism Office, it’ll cover Denver, Boulder, Aspen and Snowmass Village, and the Town of Vail and Beaver Creek Resort, almost certainly making huge shifts in these areas’ dining scenes and Colorado at large.

If I had to guess Fruition, Frasca and maybe The Wolf's Tailor would be the Boulder/Denver spots that could earn a star.

In a crossover with the Boob Tube thread, I've been watching the Barbecue Showdown on Netflix and it is wonderful and kindhearted. I make turkey breakfast sausage sometimes so we can have little mcmuffins at home, and I have the flavor dialed in the but the texture has not been amazing. There had been a running joke on the Barbecue Showdown that no one had ever made good sausage in the competition, but one contestant this year made some great sausage with a secret ingredient: milk powder. I had milk powder on hand from various baking experiments so I threw some in this time, and holy cow the texture is so much nicer! It works as an emulsifier and just kinda brings everything together.

I'm bringing egg rolls (and cookies--duh) over to a friend's tonight. He wants an authentic experience with these, so I'm bringing banana ketchup with me. Is sweet chili sauce a thing I should bring? Is that a kind of sauce that white people know and eat with egg rolls?

Okay, I love the contestants on this show more than probably any other cooking competition save for GBBO. But I loathe the two main judges. The contestants and their passion and resilience are really wholesome and inspiring - I just feel like they never actually get super valuable feedback. The guy that kept dropping his ribs in the sand?!?!?!

Oh my god I love the judges! My dude pointed out that they will often just show Kevin Bludso silently nodding while Melissa Cookston is explaining something about barbecue and now it's all I can see and it cracks me up every time. I do think they overuse "best _____ I ever had" though.
Also I don't remember who the host was the first season and I don't usually love Michelle Buteau but I think she was really cheeky and fun here.
I thought it was Auntie Delilah who kept dropping her ribs in the sand? Bless.
Also if you remember the nutty lady from this season her Instagram is exactly as you'd expect.

I think sweet & sour is the common sauce packet that Chinese restaurants throw in with their egg rolls, so sweet chili sauce would be a decent approximation to that and it would be a kind gesture to bring some in case the banana ketchup is not a hit.

I binged most of it a little while ago so it must’ve been the Auntie dropping the ribs, I just remember being STUNNED I don’t think either of the judges are offensively bad or anything it just sucks that these people put so much work into these long cooks and (at least what the edit shows) get such little actual feedback / deconstruction of their cook from the judges. It makes me just want to do away with them and watch everybody cook with no stakes lol

Yeah I wouldn't mind seeing more of the judging process for sure. Especially because competition barbecue is apparently a real thing and I'd like to learn more about how that works. While I was happy with the outcome of the second season, I didn't expect that contestant to win based on the critique.
You could say I'd like a bit more meat to the show 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪

Thanks. I did bring the sweet chili sauce, but it didn't get touched because everyone liked the banana ketchup. The banana ketchup is always a hit once people try it. Really, though, the best sauce for lumpia is Heinz 57, and eating them with regular ketchup is totally authentic to the Filipino experience (we have an odd relationship with ketchup). Hardly anyone ever believes me on that one, though--until they try it. There turned out to be a bunch more of us than we originally planned, so I whipped up some ube brownies to go with the egg rolls and chocolate caramel s'mores cookies.

You could say I'd like a bit more meat to the show 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 Coming back to this post, because while I was scrolling Netflix yesterday, I came across Barbecue Showdown and realized I had never watched the finale! I tried to go in with fewer scroogey preconceptions about the judges, and definitely laughed at Kevin nodding at what Melissa was saying. Still wish they had broken down the details of how to actually effectively cook a whole hog on a pit like the one provided, but I didn't hate them as egregiously as I remembered. However I COMPLETELY agree with not expecting that contestant to win, even though it was my preference. Logan's pig looked fucking incredible
I wonder if Thyron's rig hadn't collapsed if he wouldn't have burnt the skin so bad. I can't remember if it was already black at that point. They both seemed to have fairly solid cooks with their pigs otherwise. Felt bad for Logan's inconsistent temps but also thought he probably messed with his pig way too much. Also as soon as I saw Auntie Delliah the rib-dropping came right back to me

Imo if you’re going bigger plate mode it’s worth paying the premium for some of the honey walnut shrimp.

while I know what I am eating is not healthy, I try not to get two fried sugary sweet entrees. if you think its better than the orange chicken I'll try it out instead but I just cant imagine that to be true

I might do the green bean chicken or the teriyaki chicken instead of the beef and broccoli because I try not to eat beef other than special occasions but going to Panda Express for dinner is a special occasion.
