That’s the intersection I’m at. If I’m sitting down for some reason I like the set lunches at ramen San and sushi San. If I want interesting food I’d go to revival or French market. If work is paying for it prime and provisions has a set lunch that I’ve never had but imagine is good. The only thing that’s within two blocks that’s notable is Cleo’s which is great but nap food. Taza is serviceable Mediterranean. Asada is serviceable Mexican (not better than xoco certainly).

Oasis is still the best med. quick service near the loop by a pretty wide margin but supposedly the spot a lil south of the sears tower is great but it’s rare I go that far. Silk Road spicy chicken is fire for nap time lunch.

Ended up going to Cafecito. Haven't been in a few years since we moved offices and had no idea there was another location over here. The El Toro hit the spot.
I may check out French Market tomorrow.

I thought thattu dinner was very good. Much better than lunch. The pork chop is a must, as was the beet pastry. Rounded the order out with the kerala chicken bites and the chickpea curry. I would definitely go back to check out the more seafood forward dishes. Love that there's no tipping, presumably everything is just priced appropriately and they actually take care of their staff.
Also said goodbye to metropolitan beforehand, RIP.

Hesitant of trendy stuff generally and between the various pop ups had prob a 50% complete success rate but will concede finally that the Akahoshi Miso ramen is a bowl of ramen only paralleled by Menya Goku in chicago. Really banging stuff. Excited to try the rest of the menu.

I was not overly impressed with Thattu - I think we ordered pretty much the whole menu and while everything was tasty, no particular dish was super memorable. Also felt the service was so minimal as to be lacking - we had to flag someone down to ask for things a few times (like utensils)

Went to Cosmcs and yeah, the 3+ hr wait was fun *melting face emoji*. Did get some cool swag though with a magnet, cup holder coaster and a pin with Cosmc the alien (probably the future mascot of the stores). Food/drinks were about a 7.6 on the Pitchfork scale. Highlights were a popping pear slush, spicy queso sandwhich, cookie butter mcpops. For someone who tends to eat more health consciously, and hasn’t had McDonald’s in probably close to 10 years, I’d wait till the hype dies down and would maybe get a drink again. Also going to Bolingbrook is a trek, they plan on opening 94 of these stores by the end of 2025. Not sure if any more are coming to IL?

I went to the ramen lord joint last night and really liked the miso ramen. it is absolutely one of the best bowls in town. Idk how often I'll be back due to the crazy reservation situation. Ramen is usually a craving I seek immediate gratification for. Can't plan eating a bowl of soup five weeks in advance.

I went on Tuesday. I ordered the miso and my wife got the soupless tantanmen which she ended up not liking so she also ordered the shoyu.
The miso was definitely amazing, the chashu was melt in your mouth. The shoyu was waaaaaay too fishy for me, I didn't like it. We took the tantanmen home, I ate it cold the next day and it was so good. I thought it was better cold the next day than it was when it hit the table.

Yeah the shoyu went really heavy on the dashi I thought. I liked it but the gf was very overwhelmed.

Old news to the NW side of the board but I finally went to Community Tavern over the weekend and it was really good! I did not realize I had a burger of that caliber in my vicinity. Cocktails were very nice, I got the duck fat washed old fashioned and another cocktail that was gin and some kind of pear liqueur. Started with the charred carrots, mushroom butter dumplings and the mussels (champagne/brie/thyme/jalapeno/lemon version), all of which were great dishes and honestly that would have been plenty for the two of us but we ordered a bit silly. Aforementioned burger was damn good though at that point I could barely eat half, and my dude got the cashew short rib noodles which were so unctuous and cozy (though again too much to finish). Was all great, will be back.

In other things I ate this week, we made the Malort cookie last night and it's actually dang good i had a buddy that made them for a cookie party a week ago. pretty good day of. v v grapefruit forward i though. however, i thought the leftover ones I grabbed for later were better after they sat for a couple days. something about the sitting made the chocolate come out more to help balance the grapefruit

Did community tavern.
Best bite was for sure the short rib cashew noodles. Pork ribs and mushroom butter dumplings also big winners.
Rounded out the order with the Vietnamese crepe, fried chicken, a few oysters (raw > grilled), and the squash salad.
Overall a big recommend.

I have now in the past 6 months or so had two of the more acclaimed new bakeries in Chicagos takes on a chicago style hot dog croissant and I still think neither has unlocked the true potential of the idea

Who's doing it now? Daisies?
I feel like the hot dog in a croissant thing, generally, is just not going to be the best way to enjoy either a hot dog or a croissant.

yeah. hot dog roll at chiu quon used to be a favorite bfast treat when I took the red line to work so I think the concept is pretty easily accomplishable. I think there is a lack of creativity in actually coming up with a way to make the flavors stick out. Biggest issues have been weak incorporation of pickle and most obviously fixable, not enough mustard.

I feel like the hot dog always dries out and is unappetizing.

the daisies dog itself actually had a surprising amount of snap still. it was really a condiment issue.

Going with friends to Bites Asian Kitchen fir Restaurant Week on Thursday. Anyone been? The menu looks pretty good, but there seems to be a fair amount of pretension associated with the place. Including taking a credit card to secure a reservation.

Have been to bites many times, although not in years. It at least used to be pretty cheap/casual and not pretentious. Mostly it's slightly elevated pan asian food with a liquor license to cater to the post college crowd. Would imagine they have to give you quite a bit of food to hit the $42.
