I have thoughts and create polls about them

Sometimes, but if it’s something I want to listen to I’ll listen to it regardless. I got in the habit of listening to stuff before a pitchfork review came out so I’d be challenged to come up with my own opinions on it and that was pretty nice.

I read reviews of albums from popular artists I don't necessarily care about just so I know where the pulse is going to be.
I listen to albums I plan on listening to regardless

If its an album I'm interested in listening to, I typically don't read reviews just because...I already know I'm interested.
But I also listen to tons of albums I would normally gloss over because I've read a review of it

I'll admit, I only discovered Endless Boogie because their album art caught my eye on Pitchfork.
The review was a 6.6.
It was wrong.

i would say recs fron friends have become more important than reviews at this point in my life but sometimes they are still helpful

Someone who would answer no to this i assume just never listens to new music which would make sense for a fair amount of this board!

It really depends on the hype behind it. If it's something I'm really looking forward to (and haven't received a copy of yet) I like to read a review and see if I agree with it. I usually don't agree with them tho. Especially with Fantano. Legit don't know what that guy is thinking sometimes.

I voted yes because technically I do just because it takes me a while to get around to music. I don't think it's ever dictated whether or not if I actually listen to the album tho. If it's something that's been out for a while I'll look at it's reception under wiki but like I said, I'll still listen.

I mean, do you call Timbo's list of releases a critical review, because that's essentially my first jumping off point. I listen to new music because it's new, not because someone is telling me to.

I can't remember the last time I went out of my way to read a review about an album that wasn't linked on here first for some reason.

I am kind of amazed how much stock people put into the Pitchfork reviews still. I mean, I get that it's the brand. But the current EIC came from Spin. Does anyone care what Spin thinks? But we care if it's under the Pitchfork brand name?
I get it, but I'm still puzzled by it.

I would probably say that 100% of people on this board read Pitchfork in the mid/late part of the last decade and everyone is addicted to it at this point. The only other reason why I think people care is that they are the only ones who review new music in great detail consistently. Really the only other places I can think of who write actual reviews are Stereogum and Noisey (and timbo), and they don't do so with any sort of frequency like the fork does

Sometimes. For whatever reason I've had a harder time finding music critics whose perspective I really appreciate than movie, TV and book critics.

I guess an important part of this discussion is that I typically read reviews to see if it seems like I'll like a project/album - never "to see if its any good."
I'm way more focused on key words about sound, style, influences etc. than I am some Pitchfork writer analyzing the lyrics.
so much music, so little time

ehh it's still getting prioritized and promoted by someone somewhere before it reaches you. Fair, but I was more speaking to that fact that's it's just a general description of the sound/aesthetic, and leaving the merit out of it.

I mean the only times people really post reviews on here are when the writer is a total idiot and we roast them, when the album is contested in the "guess the pitchfork score" thread, or if its a monkey pissing on its own face.
I don't really see people sharing reviews here as a sign of worth whatsoever

I mean, I swear I'm not trying to be pretentious, but there's never been a music review website that I've visited consistently unless you count this board. Music is so subjective I'm generally not interested in what some reviewer with nebulous/unknowable taste comparable to mine thinks.
Plus, Jamie XX got tons of good reviews, so who can trust them?

The only contemporary music critic that comes to mind who reliably gets me to re-evaluate something or check something out is Noz

In the old days, I would have read reviews before buying most albums. But given that we get them instantly on spotify or whatever now and really don't pay for them, I just go and listen.

Someone who would answer no to this i assume just never listens to new music which would make sense for a fair amount of this board! I feel like this is only true if your definition of "critics' reviews" is extremely broad.
