Can't agree more. Would have def made my draft list were we allowed to include docs What? You are allowed to include docs on the board list Oh.. sorry for the confusion and great then.. have added that one to my tentative list +a few other movies, and might add a handful more docs Incendies Leviathan The Fall of the American Empire Snowpiercer The Skin I Live in Aurora Borealis Biutiful Tangerines The Florida Project Ex Machina In Between The Hunt Moonlight Bullhead Act of Killing A Man called Ove Monsieur Lazhar The Square A Prophet Foxtrot Mustang Roma Her My life as a Courgette The Rabbi's Cat Of Gods and Men

Mind you my list will ultimately be pretty useless for this board compilation considering that about 90% of the movies that I'll end up listing aren't American, and moreover that a bunch of them weren't widely seen to start with..

longest eyeroll in human history begins now Hey, keep trying to push it farther.. perhaps that long eyeroll will ultimately lead you to the foreign movie corner of whatever streaming torrent you are using.. don't give up

It seems like a lot of people are into the same stuff (foreign, not as widely seen, etc), and part of the purpose of opening the thread up so early is so we can watch each other’s suggestions! I think it’ll be great!

bosma i'm pretty sure this thread is only for discussion of the fast and the furious series can you talk about all your lame nerd movies somewhere else!?

I have myself watched some grrat movies after seeing them referenced here (special thanks to Andrew and you of late.. though honestly from what I recall from my early days on the board (when Pulp Symb and a few other boarders whose name I can't recall), there were more foreign or indie movies referenced/discussed regularly overall.. but I guess it is all ebbs and flows

Great for you .. what I am trying to say is that year after year, in the Board's MOTY table, I don't think I can recall a single instance of say three foreign language movies cracking the top 10. Maybe they are also less easily available in the US that they are in Canada (beside the ones crowned by Cannes or the Academy at least)?

I get what you’re saying, but I also think that a big problem is US distribution of foreign language films. If you don’t live in a major city it is incredibly difficult to get a hold of foreign language films on their first run. Even if you do have an art theater nearby, if you can’t make it one or two nights you’ll miss it entirely. Usually we’re a handful of months behind on foreign films as a result, and I think if you tabulated the results a year later they’d probably be a little bit different.
All that to say, I think this project is going to be fun and I look forward to everyone’s input, regardless of obscurity

Like I didn't know whether to count Dogtooth as a 2010's movie, because it was released in 2010 here and I've seen it on some 2010's lists, but it came out in 2009 in Greece. And in general it makes end of year lists harder for figuring out where to count those movies. I'll admit though I do not get around to many foreign language films. I want to fix that, I know there's lots of good stuff out there, but I always have a backlog of the big films here and sometimes I prioritize those just because they are popular and part of pop culture right now and I wanna be able to join in on the conversation. And there's so much media nowadays of various types I enjoy that I just don't have time for everything. On top of that, I don't know a lot of good resources for good foreign films besides when I hear about something winning/being nominated for awards or topping the year end lists I read

dogtooth came out in the US in theaters in 2010 and was nominated for the 2010 oscars, so i think it should count as 2010 even though it was at film festivals in 2009. it seems like we normally count films in the year they came to theaters when we are doing our year end lists and stuff.

speaking of, i would have voted for dogtooth in the 2010 best foreign language film voting. how about y'all? i havent seen outside the law (or even heard of it). i think we know which sick2b would have voted for.... In a Better World (Denmark) in Danish – Susanne Bierdouble-dagger Biutiful (Mexico) in Spanish – Alejandro González Iñárritu Dogtooth (Greece) in Greek – Yorgos Lanthimos Incendies (Canada) in French – Denis Villeneuve Outside the Law (Algeria) in Arabic – Rachid Bouchareb

Is the big short a good movie or do I have bad taste?

I remember really loving Amores Perros but that’s pretty much all I remember about it, and I watched Birdman a few months back and thought it held up. I so rarely think about the Revenant despite the fact that it’s on my shelf.

There was probably a good action movie buried in the Revenant. However, our mans couldn't stop sniffing his own ass

Is the big short a good movie or do I have bad taste? If I hadn’t ended up watching it like a trillion times while getting an economics degree I would probably enjoy it a lot more. At a bare minimum the performances are good and it does a great job at contextualizing who the actual bad guys in the financial crisis were, so it gets points for that.

Also, please listen to the Dollop on Hugh Glass and tell me Inarritu didn't actually make the story more boring

I still dig Birdman. Might be the only one of his I’ve seen, though.
