This is a four-day work week for me and my wife (who for the most part dislikes horror) is out of town... 31 might be doable after all.

This ended past midnight last night, so I'm officially rollin'! 01. The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018; Johannes Roberts)Bailee Madison ended up being great, but for the first third of this movie I was pretty excited for each character to meet their fate. Some genuinely flat performances and super odd shots make this one a bit of a bumpy ride until it really takes off.
That said, when it does take off, it RULES. I'm pretty sure I remember this being well-liked on here...but that pool scene, goddamn! I actually picked up the remote and immediately rewound to see the zoom-shot in that scene again. Easily the best part of the movie.
Couldn't be more excited for this month!

is the first one any good?

Yes!!! My least favorite thing about the sequel is that they sort of cribbed the most terrifying line* from the original and shoehorned the same moment into a scene that didn't need it. "Why are you doing this to us?"
"...Because you were home."

The first one kinda irritates me because there are a lot of scenes that feel almost scary but the scariest thing the Strangers do for like half the movie is just.... stare at the main characters

But the sheer brutality in this one is sometimes enough to jolt you into a scare.

I'm going to try to do a Criterion day on a weekend or something and watch Kwaidan, Valerie's Week of Wonders, and Godzilla.

I don’t think Valerie’s Week of Wonders is really a horror movie unless you’re super scared of periods
