Advertising an album show and then playing the album on shuffle is like advertising you're going to read a book, and then reading the chapters out of order. Yeah we all still got there but what the fuck. i equate it more like reading a short story collection out of order for most albums. but if someone played a concept album out of order, there should justly be a riot.

I do wish more bands would do what Springsteen used to do and just drop an album by surprise one night. I know Death Cab did that last year w/ Transatlanticism at the Chicago Theatre. I think the only time I've ever seen that happen is Foo Fighters playing Wasting Light front-to-back at Metro in 2011. my favorite one of the surprise album sets is girls against boys playing Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby at the touch & go anniversary at the hideout. and then they did a fake encore with "kill the sexplayer" and something else to round it out.

I mean if the question is phrased like: A band like The Who doing "Quadrophenia" in full, which is arguably their best album vs. A band like The National doing "High Violet" in full, which is arguably their 4th best on a good dayI mean, it's more interesting if you strike the flawed premise. If an album is just ok does it deserve to be played in full? And what does it mean if an artist has only one album? Aren't they technically playing it in full? Where is that large automobile? Am I right? Am I wrong? MY GOD, HOW DID I GET HERE?

I don't really mind the out of order thing in most cases. For Built to Spill in particular, "Carry the Zero" works so well as a closer and I like that they recognize that. I can also imagine some artists might find it draining to play the same exact set night after night, so mixing up the order every night like BtS does at least adds some degree of freshness

In general, it's good.
I kind of wish more classic rock bands - the ones that tour every summer - would do this.

i think it's a good thing for bands even when it's an album i dont care for. lets them try out songs they may have looked over previously or lets new fans who werent around for the original tour talk over those tracks. fixed that for ya

I've seen some good full albums sets and some not as good.
I think when Springsteen did The River it was bad, because he has too many songs that are good to just have them be relegated to the B-set.
I'd rather a band just sprinkle a full album in their set paced around their other songs.

a surprise album set i got was in '87 when boston played the texxas jam and this was their comeback after being out of the spotlight for years. they'd just released "third stage" which wasn't very good and after playing a few of their hits they said "we're going to play our new album in its entirety!" oof. half the stadium had cleared out by the time they finished it.

I once stood for 45 joyless minutes watching Smashing Pumpkins play "Oceania" in its entirety just to 'earn' the hits set afterward. Bad times.

Screw full album sets, just let me pick the setlist.
Also the majority of these albums that are played in full generally make up the majority of a normal setlist, so I don't really see the benefit of it outside of maybe if it's a really well produced album and song placement is important.

The worst part about the Pumpkins show was that it was marketed as some groundbreaking visual experience and it ended up being videos projected on a balloon

Album sets are awesome. With how many live bands we all see on a yearly basis it's nice to get something unique.

The real question is would you rather have a full album set or a fan voted set? Imagine having to see the mutant fan set of Pearl Jam

I can't really think of any full album sets I really enjoyed other than The Hazards Of Love.

I mean, I voted good, I am seeing Manchester Orchestra Play "Mean Everything to Nothing" in a week and a half, and I flew to Vegas to see A Perfect Circle play their first 2 albums in full, but outside of Riot Fest I haven't seen that many other full album sets.

Hit or miss. Sometimes the nostalgia sets are OK but it's usually better when someone is actually promoting a really good album and happen to play it through in their shows

Hit or miss for me, but I voted bad. There are very few bands where I love one of their albums so much that I would rather hear it live in its entirety rather than hear a normal set. The Cure playing Bloodflowers in full worked mainly because it was at The Vic and I could stand mesmerized 10 feet away from Robert Smith with other die hard fans. If it had been at a larger venue, it probably would not have worked.
Another problem with an album set is that most albums are frontloaded and if they are played in order, it is somewhat anticlimactic.
