You are helping me prove a point though, and I'm sorry to use you as my example here, but look at the artists you listed above, off the top of your head, and then think about Earl Sweatshirt or even Frank Ocean. "Things that are important culturally" and "things that we deem actually good" are only small components of this question/answer IMO. Some of these acts put out good, even great, albums. Some of them absolutely ruled the decade. Big, big divide. The point's a fair one, but you also have to take into consideration the idea of a monoculture has absolutely shattered compared to those decades. Also true - but doesn't that also make it even more impressive when an artist like Beyonce or Taylor Swift can more or less transcend that and still be almost unarguably the biggest artist in existence? Whether you like 1989 or Lemonade or Push the Sky Away the most, I think we are missing the forest for trees. lets switch gears which star wars is the worst one

Oh I don't consider Earl to be an artist of the decade by any means, he had an impact and I was just using that to explain why Tyler, by helping bring Earl up, can somewhat be seen as influential for that reason. Frank I do though. I can see the argument for Beyonce and Drake as well, but I'd give it to Frank *shrug* It is harder for me to argue with Frank as a choice because I think one of the marks of "artist of the decade" is that they are not merely "influential," but to the degree that the entire pop music scene shifts to adjust/accept a new style. I still don't know that I'd cast my vote there but he's not out of place in that conversation. At the risk of sounding too simple about this, I just think it should be someone bigger.

Frank is not the artist of the decade. I know everyone here (and a lot of hypebeasts around the world) love/loves him, but come on.

just curious to gain a little perspective in this conversation: im curious who your top artists of the 00s / 90s / 80s were, if you're answering the question. seeing opinions like "earl sweatshirt is huge" or even "why no nick cave" is blowing my mind. 00s- Radiohead, Eminem, Kanye, Coldplay, Blink-182 90s- Nirvana, Oasis, 2Pac, Pavement, Diddy/Puffy/whatever his name is 80s- Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Springsteen, U2 70s- Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Zeppelin, Stones, Ramones. And Queen/Stevie Wonder are right in the mix too 60s- The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground, The Who, Jimi Hendrix 50s- Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Nina Simone, Buddy Holly

the only way really to get to the bottom of this is to have every boarder do a list of their top 200 artists of the decade. Then tabulate all of those lists. Then re-tabulate those lists. Then reverse those lists. Then scrap the whole project and agree that Grant Hart is.

I feel like in '09 it would have been uncontroversial to claim that a not-chart-topping artist was the most culturally impactful of the decade, especially on a forum like this

I mean that's kind of the way to look at it, no? And in that take the only true "correct" answers (of that list?) are either Kendrick or Beyonce Tyler led OFWGKTA into the mainstream, him, Frank, and Earl are huge now. OFWGKTA got white suburban kids into hip-hop like no one had except Eminem. That's why I chose him. If not him, I'd say Drake is #2, though I could easily be convinced to put him at #1. Kendrick is critically acclaimed but I don't see how he really has had a huge influence on the industry as a whole. lol
