This is a hell of a way to announce a contract extension. That's, uh....good...

It’s a two year $11.5 million deal, so that’s definitely good. He’ll come back in 2022 and they’ll get him for under market value.

The deal itself is fine, it's just the way that they broke the TJ news that was so shocking. Can you imagine reading that as a Padres fan?

Hey man they’re softening the blow.
Jose Abreu has won the 2020 AL MVP!
Also Tony LaRussa has been charged with a DUI

good stuff with jed. glad theo stepped down ahead of this offseason given that he wasn't going to extend past next year.

Agreed. Glad they're doing this now. The skeptic in me thinks of Jed as just Theo's lackey (since that's what he's been most of his career) but if he rebuilds the minor league system that's a moot point.
Sign Lester now you dweebs.

Is Theo “retiring” or do you think he will move to a new team eventually?

Is Theo “retiring” or do you think he will move to a new team eventually? I don't think he has anything left to prove but I'm sure some franchise will try to throw a shit ton of money at him at some point. Looking at you, Giants and Mets.

Is Theo “retiring” or do you think he will move to a new team eventually? He has always been vocal about any organization needing a new voice after ten years and this upcoming season would have been his tenth year (he also quit after ten in Boston). Twitter is saying he's likely going to take a season off and then pick up again somewhere new. I can't see him retiring when he's still only in his mid forties, he loves baseball too much.

Hopefully there's a coup against Manfred and Theo becomes the new commissioner.

Not surprised about Theo, but I'm curious as to what changed in the last month or so? He met with ownership and agreed to complete his deal, and now all of a sudden changed his mind? I wonder if the Rickets demanded that payroll be slashed further or something where he didn't feel he could make the team competitive?

That seems to be the working theory

They explicitly announced he would return next year like a month ago. Something changed.

I do not support this besmirching of Bruce Levine. His twitter typos have given me so much joy throughout the years.

i never really take the stuff the cubs say in those end of season press conferences seriously. they pretty much always say they "expect" things to happen or stay the same which always gives them an out. there have been reports over the past few weeks that epstein still wasn't sure if he'd stay or not.

the mets can only take so many positive news stories in a row.

What a dumbass, but that's probably welcome news for the Mets. They were already planning on spending aggressively under new ownership and now they just got another $24M freed up.

the mets can only take so many positive news stories in a row. Honestly might be a blessing in disguise if they decide to use that money on a massive 1-year deal for Trevor Bauer (assuming Bauer is serious about a one-year deal)

Yeah that was panned as an overpay even at the time. The days of handing out 10 year + contracts to players on the wrong side of 30 is probably over. They're always such an albatross at by the end.

Is at least a little circumspect to see an outgoing president open up the income tax credit faucet to a major fundraiser now. But I don't think the landmark designation is without merit, so.
