I was at Binnnys over the break, they had a display stacked with whiskey branded after the Walking Dead. They marked it down to like $5. I know it's going to be awful, but I had to buy it. The cashier even told me it was pretty bad, so that's always a great sign.

I’m a big fan of bargain bin liquor. We used to live by a liquor store that had tons of stuff like that and I would always pick up a bottle of something to make our friends take a shot of when we were pregaming for something. There was a spiced whiskey that was maybe the worst thing I’ve ever had before.

One of my teammates gave me a bottle of Jefferson's Ocean for Christmas that I've been sipping here and there since then. One of the smoothest bourbons I've had in a long while. It's expensive but I might continue to buy it for special occasions. Does anyone know a place where one can reliably buy bottles of Blanton's in Chicago?

I have no idea if this is still the case, but the wine shop in Printer's Row on Dearborn used to have a pretty great bourbon selection, including Blanton's. I'm kind of surprised it's hard to find. Related: wine shops in Denver have turned into the best spots for finding more difficult to find bourbons/liquors.

What kind of whiskey do you get your whiskey friend to celebrate him getting engaged?

What kind of whiskey do you get your whiskey friend to celebrate him getting engaged? Woodford is always a safe bet for projecting the "I spent more than I normally would on this bottle for you but also didn't go overboard" image

What kind of whiskey do you get your whiskey friend to celebrate him getting engaged? Binny's might have more of the Walking dead one for $5

What kind of whiskey do you get your whiskey friend to celebrate him getting engaged? 4 Roses Single Barrel is the best available at it's price (below $50).

Agreed on Woodford and 4 Roses Single Barrel. I'll throw in a vote for Koval too, both because they're very good, and because they gave a generous donation to the silent auction I'm putting together for my kid's school (4 tickets for a distillery tour, and 2 tickets for a cocktail class)

Nothing against 4 Roses (agreed it's very good), but if you prefer a wheated bourbon I think Weller is the best bang for your buck. It can be tough to find though.
On the scotch end I prefer blends, Johnnie Walker all day.

Lots of my favorites mentioned already, and I'll throw another vote behind Koval. Can't go wrong with any of their stuff, really. Their gin is fantastic.
For scotch my go-to's are Glenfidditch and Laphroaig. Lagavulin, too, if I'm looking for something really nice.

I've dipped my toes in to scotch a lot more in the past year. Tried a lot of different things and I also keep coming back to laphroaig, it's what I keep on my bar these days. Very rare that I have that over bourbon though.

Those whiskey tasting events have been very helpful for trying out scotches too, since they usually have had both. Definitely recommend going that route.

I know absolutely nothing about Scotch and would love to get into it more. I only got into it because I went to a tasting event that was v cheap and ended up trying a ton of scotch, many of which are not expensive/are the kind that most bars have

There's a Denver Whiskey Club that I occasionally attend, and they had one where they actually brought in someone from a small batch distillery in Scotland to do a tasting. That was pretty much my first intro.
I keep meaning to take up @wyoming on his offer to learn more about it but we always get into arguments about the proper spelling of whiskey.

I know absolutely nothing about Scotch and would love to get into it more. For starters, Johnny Black as Pale Hose mentioned or the less aged Laphroaig or Glenfidditch varieties are great places to start. I was re-gifted a bottle of Laphroaig 18 once from a boss that didn't want it and it was awesome, but super intense and peaty and I wouldn't recommend it as an entry point.
