Thank you for carrying the baton Tweet - I had both Dirty Mind and Controversy on repeat throughout the weekend. Highlighting something you said in your Dirty Mind post, Perhaps there’s no greater proof of that than the song “Head”, the second song of side B of the rekkid. Head, as some of you may know, is slang for oral sex. I ask you, who among us is not a fan of receiving (and maybe giving!) that? Prince sure was, and its written that way. He plays all the instruments, and wants you to fuck along with him (especially on “Head’s” pulsing bass line throughout). It feels like Prince was starting to become, well, Prince on this album. First off, quoted because "Head" is probably the best track on the album. Second, because it shows Prince leaning even harder into the boundary-pushing stuff we last heard in "Bambi" (and was sort of foreshadowed in "I'm Yours"). Third, because you mentioned Prince plays all the instruments, which is close to accurate but no less remarkable..."Head" is actually only the second track, sequentially, in Prince's discography where he shares a performance credit. Doctor Fink contributes synth lines to "Dirty Mind" and "Head," per Wikipedia, but the fact that every other instrument on every Prince track thus far is only Prince blows me away. All that said, time to move on to one of my favorite Prince records, featuring the best Prince title-track... Controversy (1981)Dirty Mind is Prince's first "out of his shell" album, in my opinion, but Controversy is where he absolutely landed with his definitive confidence and swagger. No singles as prominent as "When You Were Mine" or "I Wanna Be Your Lover" but the title track is my favorite Prince song we've encountered so far. "Do Me, Baby" speaks for itself as a continuation of the uber-sexy Prince we love. With "Ronnie Talk to Russia," "Let's Work," and "Jack U Off" rounding out the record, this is the first album of his I'd call flawless. Written less than a year after the release of Dirty Mind, and released almost a year to the day, Prince once again plays almost every instrument on the album. When Krentist, LXScope, and I saw Prince in 2012, he opened the first encore with "Controversy" and I lost my absolute goddamn mind. (We snuck into better seats during the sampler set, and by "Little Red Corvette" I had made it to the floor). I frequently associate that song with that night.

That night of the Prince tour was one of my favorite shows ever. Possibly #1.

Controversy always brings up two memories:
1. In fifth or sixth grade, in my small rural Wyoming town, the students took turns bringing in music for PE. I chose Controversy and I don't think the teachers were big fans.
2. The album came with a poster of Prince standing in a shower wearing nothing but a thong. I didn't think anything of it, just knew Prince was cool and so I threw it up on my bedroom wall. My parents, to their credit, just asked if I was sure I wanted to keep it up and didn't try to convince me otherwise. I think I got some pretty intense questioning from a couple of friends about it, but don't remember if I actually ended up taking it down or not.

Spoilering the poster just in case you don't want it on your work screens, but it is quite hysterical

Yeah it was reported as undeniably being the best of the 3 shows One of the most fun nights of my life Prince shows are notoriously impossible to find footage of on YouTube, but I checked again and someone has uploaded part of Night 3 from the Welcome 2 Chicago run!! This is my first time seeing any of this setup / performances since the night they happened. I took no video at the show. He opened with Controversy (approx 3min in) and it rules. This is flooding back a lot of memories of Night 2 for me. Undoubtedly in my top 3 shows of all time. Probably #2.

The only Prince show I saw was this one at Paisley. A few boarders from the past board and I waited outside in the like 40 degree weather for a few hours to get in. Was only $50 cash at the door. Backing band was the new power generation and phones were banned. saw a few poor souls get kicked out right away for looking at the time on their phones.
he played Partyman

i saw him in 97 and 04.
97 was jam of the year tour where he'd announce a tour date, tix on sale the next day, and concert 4-5 days after that. then he'd do an aftershow at a club for like $10 (which i didn't go to for some reason?) and play another hour of songs he didn't play during the regular concert.
04 was musicology tour.

He did that at City Winery here and I actually had a ticket in the cart and thought, nah.

My parents went to the Musicology tour and my dad swore off concerts because of how loud it was.
Prince at City Winery was also a dope show. You missed out. That one, I believe, was announced same day. He was in town for George Lucas’ wedding.

I think it was like $100 and it was going to run late and I was kinda tired.
It's a regret.

We all forgive you.
The show didn’t end up starting until 1 or 2 in the morning. It was a lot of standing outside beforehand.

I saw this tour as well, but the show I went to (in Kansas City) was announced almost a month in advance. I guess a lot of the tickets were will call, b/c I remember waiting in a long line outside the venue waiting to get mine. I thought I had missed most of the show by the time I made it in (9:15), but it hadn't started yet. The lights went down 15 minutes later.

This project seems to have come together around the time Controversy was written and recorded, so I thought now was a good time to include some info. Vanity 6 appears a few times throughout the next coupla years of Prince's career, up until about Purple Rain (but more on that later). Anyone familiar with this group? I am just discovering them. Also v cool that Prince was pronouncing "vagina" that way long before Borat.

Alright, last consecutive post, I promise - seems like more Prince content has made its way to YouTube in the last 5 years than I was aware of. Here's a full concert from the Controversy Tour in '82, very much worth having on in the background if that's the least you can do.
This venue is approximately the size of the Chicago Theatre.
Tomorrow we're gonna party like it's 1999.

I had some tedious work to do this afternoon and decided to put on the Batman soundtrack for the first time in several years.
Fun fact, I reviewed the record for the Daily Illini. Was in the summer, which means hardly anyone actually read the review, probably, but I remember listening to it in the staff room while writing the review and everyone was jamming to it. I don't know what I gave the album, but it was a positive review.
Listening to it today, was partially nostalgia, but I still genuinely enjoy a few of the tracks. Electric Chair is a ton of fun and has the great lyric: If a man is guilty for what goes on in his mind, Then give me the electric chair for all my future crimes".
Lemon Crush is delightful Prince horniness. I heard Batdance on Sirius a while ago and blasted that shit LOUD. Goofy soundbites, the takeoff on the TV show theme, and funky guitar lines. Makes me smile.
tl; dr - I am old and reviewed the Batman soundtrack when it came out. Liked it then, like it now.

Good stuff. That soundtrack definitely has the same goofy sonic aesthetic that the Burton movie has - and I mean that in the most complimentary way.
Felt like the last of classic 80s Prince. Graffiti Bridge is an all timer but has a different vibe
