1999 (1982)I said Controversy was Prince’s first flawless album, but even the first chords of 1999 announce themselves as the most exciting part of his catalog thus far. Written directly after Controversy was released (including while Prince was on tour), 1999 was released - again - almost exactly one year after Controversy….making it the fifth album Prince released in as many years. At the time of 1999’s release, Prince was 24 years old. For the first time in his career, Prince performs with an array of other musicians on the album, expanding his sound tremendously. And, with it, extending many of the songs on 1999 into jams allowing for improvisation and experimentation within the groove...and they all work! If Prince released a 45-minute cut of “D.M.S.R.” , it’d probably be the one I’d choose to listen to. “Let’s Pretend We’re Married” bops on and on, and just when it might get tiring, the band comes back in with the ooh-eee-sha-sha-koo-koo-yeahs! “Lady Cab Driver” ends with a great 3-minute jam segueing perfectly into “All The Critics Love U In New York.” Let’s not ignore the brilliant songs here that don’t get enough recognition - there’s so much ass-shakin’ going on during 1999 that it can be easy to forget about beautiful moments like “Free” or even the goofy “International Lover,” each excellent additions to Prince’s bag of ballads. Vanity 6 and The Time opened for Prince on the 1999 Tour, which played 3 consecutive nights at the Auditorium Theatre in 1982 and finished off at the UIC Pavilion the following year. These acts helped define the Minneapolis Sound that Prince was pioneering and had brought into the mainstream with the release of 1999. I am including the Spotify link to the Super Deluxe reissue of 1999 that came out last year, which comes with the original album, a collection of single edits and B-sides, two discs worth of “Vault” tracks cut from the album, and a full concert from the 1999 Tour. If you didn’t come to party, don’t bother knockin’ on my door.Side note: I’m currently reading I Want My MTV, about the channel’s history. There is so much talk dedicated to what big deal it was to get “Billie Jean” on TV, but (from what I remember) very little, if any, talk about the video for 1999 which premiered months before. Both are significant because MTV execs hesitated to consistently air black music videos. Rolling Stone went so far as to say that “by the time Michael Jackson came out with his much-ballyhooed “Billie Jean” video, Prince was already MTV’s signature artist.” Why would MTV give a shit about Michael Jackson being black if Prince’s videos were already exploding? Racism sucks I guess. Side note #2: I just remembered this is the album Ally Sheedy has with her in The Breakfast Club (I think I remember reading in a deleted scene, she steals it back from a teacher who confiscated it). Why on earth would you be carrying around an LP in high school in the 80s? Am I missing something here?

I would not have put this in my top 3 Prince albums before this project but I listened to the album 2x yesterday, plus the Detroit show on Spotify, and its just fucking incredible. Possibly better than Purple Rain.
Now that we're 5 albums in, I'll start ranking I guess.
1. 1999 2. Controversy 3. Prince 4. Dirty Mind 5. For You

I am excited to listen to 1999 because I always thought it was the weakest of the "big" albums

I honestly think listening to the discography in order is what makes this album sound truly incredible.
But it is truly incredible.

So I was only in elementary school in the 80s and not HS, but there realistically could be a lot of reasons. If she was really into the album she'd probably want to read the liner notes or lyrics on the school bus since that's the type of thing people would do before Genius or any of the lyrics websites existed. But even more so - if she bought it on wax and not cassette, she probably didn't have any way to dub it or transfer. Vinyl to cassette dubbing wasn't a widely used technology back then. So if she wanted to listen to it at a friends house afterwards she'd need to bring the whole thing with her. (In the movie Allison has no friends so maybe she was going to listen to it at work after detention.) In fact I think they did wind up finding a record player in the library so it likely turned out that her gambit was well-reasoned.

I am glad to see this is on Spotify now. It's so damn good and CD copies were (and probably still are) very expensive.

1. Dirty Mind 2. Controversy 3. Prince 4. 1999 5. For You
I did some reflecting and went with this so far. I really struggled between 1999 and Prince but I think the guitar solo on Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad? pushed it up to 3.

My plans are cancelled tonight. Are we ready for PR or did we wanna talk about the 80-84 Time albums?

did we wanna talk about the 80-84 Time albums? I don't remember why, but Morris Day and what was left of the Time once played a daytime show on Pioneer Court outside Tribune Tower.

I thought during PR would be a good time to cover The Time since they're featured so much in the movie We all have to learn the "chili sauce" move during the Bird dance. KTD, I nominate you to write something up for Purple Rain to get us all in the mood to listen.

The puppet scene in Purple Rain is easily one of my favorite things ever. It’s like...cornbread, mashed potatoes made with sour cream, and the puppet scene in Purple Rain.

Someone better at technology can link the damn album tho. idk what to say abt this album other than that it's pretty siq. It's only 42 minutes long but every minute is perfect. Purple Rain is the best power ballad of all time. The only song of its type in the same universe is November Rain. Uhh When Doves Cry is probably the most popular song on this album. That's insane! Imagine making dance music and just taking the damn bass line out!!! And then it's a huge hit. This guy's out of his mind good. The song manages to work because Prince lets the arrangement breather and doesn't need the heavy bassline to get a groove up and running. What else is there to say. I adore the transition between I Would Die 4 U and Baby I'm a Star. it comes at moment where it seems like the album couldn't possibly have any more forward momentum and then it does somehow. Wild stuff! He had a lot of good guitar playing on other albums but I think this album is the one that most convincingly advances the argument that he's the best to ever pick up an ax. Every tool you could want a guitarist to have, he does. UHH what else? Oh, the sex. Darling Nikki is pretty horny. That's good. Stay horny Prince. Ok folks put your thoughts below
