I work with this guy at the IRS who is about your age. He was could not read a tax document that he was processing and asked me for help. I asked why he couldn't read it and he said it was because it was written in cursive. I thought it my be just bad handwriting. I looked at it and had no problem reading it. I know that cursive writing isn't taught very much any more in elementary school. My question is: Do people your age not know cursive writing?

I’m younger than tweet and I learned cursive. Was only allowed to write in it through middle school. Curious to hear tweet’s answer

How do you feel about this new Sufjan track? Feels a little weird to lead off with this as a single, especially since Bob Dylan already set the bar for American themed 10+ minutes long single releases this year. Good news though is it feels like Sufjan's going back to Age of Adz like sounds. I read this album is like a companion piece to Carrie and Lowell? I'm about it overall- should be a treat to get the album in full in September

How do you feel about this old Sufjan track? I don't think I've listened to it before honestly but leading off with an Al Michaels sample is hotter than most hip hop tracks ever recorded. I, Tonya's been in my Hulu queue since I got Hulu- maybe I'll finally watch it this weekend or something. Not the best Sufjan song for my money but I'm pretty sure the dude could make a song about grass growing and I'd still put it on repeat for a few hours if it spoke to me in the right way.

When are you dropping that podcast as promised? So right now the plan is to have what I am referring to for now as "an entrepreneurial activity" operational on or around Labor Day. The actual serious outlining of what's going on and getting the structure in place has been happening since Memorial Day weekend. There are a handful of people I've contacted about it (at least 2 on the board) as more of a feeler-type conversation, but last night was the first night where I was able to sit down with some people and start to figure out how to make it a reality (hence, why I got drunk and made this thread). I don't want to say too much more about it beyond that; I'm a firm believer that speaking things into existence before they actually happen kills shit. But the wheels are rotating for real. To the actual question on the podcast though: one of the things we've been exploring is how to release original content with the limited resources (financial and otherwise) I have at the moment. Podcasting has been one of those options talked about, but I know jack shit about podcasting and have always found the majority of them hard to focus on. But apparently it's pretty easy to create. I would guess there would be a podcast-type thing coming along the way, but it's not where my focus is right now with this activity at the moment. But hey, who knows.

Last October I was driving in the middle of no-mans land between Omaha and Lincoln Nebraska. I say no-mans land because the only fast food place advertised on the highway signs were Subway. Having not been in a Subway since Jared was arrested, but also being relatively hungover and the continental hotel breakfast not doing it for me, I knew what I had to do. Despite not having been in a Subway in a long time, I remembered my routine without a second thought. "Turkey and Black-forest ham on white. Pepperjack. Toasted. Lettuce, tomato, extra onions, extra black olives. May-...."I stopped myself. I remembered what a hot button topic this is in America today. What does my choice about Mayo- a staple of sandwiches growing up for me as a child- say about me in the year of our Yeezus 2020? Moreover, what kind of boring ass person just uses straight mayo these days? In college I discovered what a Sirracha sauce was and how you can combine that with Mayo and make it work. There's all sorts of wacky shit out there. Hell, why not really go for it and get Ranch instead? A funny thing happened in the one and a half seconds I had this thought while the sandwich guy looked at me, a calm but annoyed look on his face. I realized for the first time in my 20+ years of life that Subway also has mustard at the end of the condiment bucket. Growing up I thought of mustard as that thing you put on hotdogs or the packet you smash on the shirt of some kid you were told was bullying your brother during recess. As I got older I had used mustard on many a sandwich- but never a subway sandwich. But another second had gone by; time was not on my side. "Mayo and Mustard, please. That's it" I paid with my company card (along with a bag of baked Lays potato chips and a 20oz bottle of Coca-Cola, before you ask) and walked back to my car. There was still a good half hour of driving, and I would make it to the end of this no-mans land eventually. But sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures, and that was the day I confirmed a truth I'd long suspected was one, but could never verify until that day. And that's that Mayo is fine.

How much do you hate The National on a scale of 10-10? For as much as I love The National I really think it would do them good to take 2-3 years off. I've always held that they're the definition of a take it or leave it kind of band. I was listening to "About Today" a few nights ago and just constantly thought to myself "damn this is heavy" which is not the kind of relationship I have with their music. I think Big Red Machine backing Michael Stipe would be something to see on next year's fest circuit- typing that out, I've decided I'd want that over another National set. So I think I'm sitting at a 1.0 here

Will you be dropping the $200+ to watch a Cubs game from the rooftops? The fan in me really, really wants to say yes because given how batshit this season/year has been it would probably be cathartic as fuck to watch the core lineup tee off on some triple a team like the Tigers or the Royals or whoever (Are the Pirates shitty? I usually assume they're shitty but I'm trying to not assume anything about anything anymore). But you've probably read by now I've got some shit going on, and also there's a literal pandemic going on at the moment, so I have to pass. That being said, the games will most certainly be on in the background (TV muted so Pat and Ron can call the game) and anytime you get to watch a ballgame with your friends is priceless

I know that cursive writing isn't taught very much any more in elementary school. My question is: Do people your age not know cursive writing? There are two things I was taught around 4th grade that I distinctly remember sensing were bullshit immediately upon hearing them: 1. You have to know how to do basic math because you'll never be able to carry a calculator around in your pocket, and 2. You have to know how to write in cursive because that's how adults write. Both of those things were bullshit because I had a computer at home that had a calculator built in and sent the written word around the globe instantly. Clearly that was gonna be the future and clearly I was the smuggest little shit in 4th grade. So writing in cursive I did for homework assignments until the start of high school when no one gave a shit about that anymore and now I can only write in cursive my signature and my Mom's signature (you know, for 8th grade field trips to Six Flags purposes). Not being able to read cursive seems pretty alarming though. I guess if you have sloppy handwriting combined with the jumbling of letters that cursive optically leads itself to I can see it happening, but really I just think that kid is dumb and needs to get it together. Reading cursive i s basically just typing in another font. And as anyone whose ever followed my posting career knows, reading comprehension is hard but important to do.

What's the best way to introduce a neophyte to Phish? I think it depends on what their response to "jam bands" are as a whole. Like if they're big into jam bands they should like Phish as is. But in this equation we'll assume (aw shit, here I go assuming again!) they don't have any real familiarity with what a jam band is. In that case, your best introduction would be a live experience of some sort. I'd probably make a playlist of your favorite 6-12 live Phish cuts and have the neophyte in question hit shuffle play. See what sticks and what doesn't. My first exposure to Phish was literally going to one of the Wrigley Field shows in like 2016. I'd just never listened to them before but my friends are big into them, and I said that if there was ever a show we could hit up together I'd go. This is absolutely not the way I'd do it but assuming the person has jam band exposure and/or likes going to concerts, I suppose (dang it I'm assuming again!) that could be a fun thing to do once we're allowed to go to non Survivor contestant related concerts again. I'm not following them around the country ever but I'd certainly see another Phish show if the timing was right
