16 years ago on this date I saw Sleater-Kinney at the now-defunct Mississippi Nights in STL. This was when they were touring for The Woods, which is my favorite album of theirs. During the opening band, I spied Carrie and Corin over at the merch table seated, talking to people. I went over and said hello. I thought Carrie was prettier in person, I asked her for advice for an 'aspiring musician', and she advised me to take risks. S-K's set was killer. They played all of The Woods except for 'Night Light', and I was ecstatic they played 'One More Hour', as they didn't play that the last time I saw them. This was apparently their first time in STL in a long time, I read in a local zine a quote from one of them saying "we don't hate the place, we just haven't been back for a while". At the show's end, Carrie said they'd come back again sooner.

on this day in 1992, I saw evangeline, the radiators, and cece peniston at the china club. we saw gary busey while he was wondering around the club. on this day in 1995, I saw the now late kevin gilbert, who was sheryl crow’s ex boyfriend, and headliner jonatha brooke and the story, at schubas. Introducing a song about life, jonatha expressly bemoaned her parents’ reconciliation. Gilbert died the next yr from auto-asphyxiation. www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/More-Than-The-Piano-Player-Dumped-by-Sheryl-2966770.php“He was found in bed wearing a leather hood, leather skirt, and had one end of a belt looped around his neck and the other end around the bedpost. It was classic auto-erotic asphyxiation, which was an aspect of his life that no one had a clue about. His official cause of death is listed as ‘accidental suicide.’” on this day in 2004, the better half and I saw the waco brothers and urge overkill at west fest. on this day in 2009, I saw the now late leon redbone at the old town school. on this day in 2010, the better half and I saw kix brooks, bob dipiero, the band perry, david murphy, love and theft, jake owen, and headliner jewel at the chicago country music festival. www.setlist.fm/setlist/jewel/2010/millennium-park-chicago-il-23de6877.htmlon this day in 2017, I saw the trashcan sinatras at lincoln hall. www.setlist.fm/setlist/trashcan-sinatras/2017/lincoln-hall-chicago-il-63e3fa97.html

October 9, 2008
This was a memorable night, for the show, but also (mostly) for the post-show antics.
We’re headed to the Rivera Theater for a triple bill: Girl in a Coma, City and Colour, and the always resplendent Tegan and Sara. I don’t remember much about the openers. I remember the production values being amped up more than usual, with a fancy (by T&S standards) light show. The setlist was awesome; even better than the ACL set the month prior, with plenty from The Con and So Jealous, and a cover of RiRi’s “Umbrella.”
Afterwards, I headed off to L&L Tavern to meet up with ALady and TheTodd, the latter being in town for some shows I can’t recall at the moment. I think another boarder was there too, and I feel like a jerk for not being able to remember (I sorta do, but I won’t say in case I'm wrong). I do remember playing “Valerie Loves Me” on the jukebox. It’s funny what the brain choses to store. I definitely know we didn’t end the night at L&L. The end.

26 years ago on this date I saw Sponge at The Blue Note. This was, I believe, the second ever club show I had ever been to (Veruca Salt was the first, but I don't have a date for it). I knew the band from 'Molly' and 'Plowed', which were getting played on the radio and MTV. I had a great time at the show, they covered 'What I Like About You' and the Speed Racer theme. They ended with a song whose chorus was "I'm a big girl/you're a big girl/NA NA NA NA NA!" which I thought was awesome at the time. I came out thirsty, sweaty, and smelling of cigarette smoke.

Nana, that 'like' is for Make-Up/Shellac/Fugazi, not Rob Van Winkle.
30 years ago on this date I saw The Fifth Dimension at Jesse Auditorium here in town. I was into oldies music around this time in my life, and this girl who I was friends with liked that kind of music as well, so my Dad got us tickets. There were only 4 of them on stage that night as one of them was sick (Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr were present AFAIK). The show had an intermission, during which we walked over to the McDonald's on campus and had french fries. We both enjoyed the show, it started with 'Up Up and Away', and the encore was 'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In'. I recently learned that this was the only time that the group had ever done a reunion tour with the original lineup.

on this day in 2010, i saw belle & sebastian at the chicago theatre. i had an extra ticket that i was trying to get rid of. i ran into a friend of a friend who also had an extra they were trying to lose. and then i ran into yet another acquiantance who had like 8 extras that he never scalped. this show was "sold out" but had plenty of empty seats. i sat with the first friend in my seats, first or second balcony row. there were some really good songs and a lot of time-wasting (like stuart's dreadful makeup tutorial for "lord anthony"). afterward, i ran into a photographer friend who was supposed to take some shots of stuart for a magazine. we waited in the alley for him to come out. i said hello and asked him about the mets to gauge his fandom. my friend, who scoffs at sports, was embarrassed. but she got the pictures she needed and even took one of me with him.
on this day in 2011, i saw bryan ferry at the civic opera house. the sound for non-opera here has not impressed me, but this wasn't bad. i didn't really know what to expect, but hoped for a lot of roxy music. i heard a good amount of that and also some really interesting covers. he was a great performer.

2 years ago today I was seeing Charli XCX at the House of Blues. I was at the back of the floor pit on the main floor, and surrounded by people probably half my age. Was talking to one of them for a bit and told them that was probably the 5th or 6th time I saw Charli, and I think they were pretty surprised.
6 years ago I saw DIIV and No Joy at Thalia. Pretty sure I got this through jukely. Only thing I remember about this show is after every single song, the singer from DIIV said "Hi, we're DIIV," and he must have thought that was pretty funny.
10 years ago was a pretty great double show night, I first saw Portishead at the Aragon. I have not been a fan of them live, and that show didn't do much to change my opinion of that unfortunately. I got out of the Aragon as fast as I could and got over to Lincoln Hall, since I won free tickets for Zola Jesus. Made it in time for her set. Room was maybe 3/4 full, so there was plenty of room. I remember she got off the stage at one point and was running around through the crowd. I did not realize how short she was until that point.

on this day in 2012, i saw the soft pack and heavy hawaii at lincoln hall. this was the last time i saw soft pack and it had to be the worst. i had seen them several times under both names. a couple times they were awesome and a few times they were really not. the quality of their performance was usually very clear within a couple minutes. and this one started off with a band putting in minimal effort. some bands can get away with being coolly disinterested, but the trade-off is that they usually sound good and give glimpses of their potential. this was not that. the friends i went with had also seen them many times and we were all pretty disappointed.

on this day in 1995, i saw r.e.m. at the spectrum in philly. i'd been looking forward to this for a long time. (i think i got the tickets in january, which is by far the longest i had tickets for an upcoming show.) the seats were not great, sort of behind the stage in the middle of the upper bowl. but it was the most prolific show i'd been to up until then and the setlist was fun. now i'd probably enjoy the show more than then.
on this day in 2001, i saw the donnas at metropol in pittsburgh. this was around when tori was having wrist issues, so i knew they weren't going to play too long. they ripped through a short set and i had a great time. earlier in the day, i had met them at a record shop nearby. two of them very nice and the other two were not so nice.
on this day in 2011, i saw jacuzzi boys, hollows and mac blackout at the now defunct ultra lounge. i'd seen jacuzzi boys before and wasn't so into them live. i think i went more for hollows. but jacuzzi boys were way better than the prior show. they went wild on the reverb and it added a little something to a lot of songs.

12 years ago on this date I went to the Pageant in STL for my first metal show in a club/small theater, which was Dethklok, Mastadon, Converge and High on Fire. I remember the singer from Converge shouting, and he sounded like "BAWK! BAWK! BAWK" for all of his lyrics. Mastodon was fine, and Dethklok was fun, they had clips from Metalocalypse to accompany the performance. I sat in the balcony, and just watching the crowd during the sets was entertaining.

on this day in 2011, i saw the dum dum girls, crocodiles, and colleen green at the empty bottle. i was supposed to be on the guest list and showed up to find i was not on the list and it was sold out. for some reason, i was determined to get into this show. so i called the person who put me on the list and told them i wasn't on it. five minutes later they called back and said "try again. you're on colleen's list." i got in. i caught colleen and thanked her for acceding to who called her. then i bought some of her merch. but i was not terribly thrilled with her set that night. crocodiles were good. dum dum girls were a little better. it was a pleasant evening.

on this day in 2003, i saw beulah and john vanderslice at the rotunda in philly. i'm sure i've told this story before on the board. this was touted as beulah's last tour and i'd never seen them, so i was really amped. this was also the night of game 7 of the NLCS (the day after the bartman game). doors were supposed to open at 7:30, but they didn't open until 8:45. i spent much of that gap and then between bands watching the game at the bar next door. john vanderslice was entertaining.
beulah sounded good. they were playing a lot of what i wanted to hear - a good mix across their albums, except the first one. the crowd was into it. but the singer's just not a great frontman. he performed well. but his banter was lacking hints of charisma. on one hand, i get it; the reason this is the last tour is you don't want to do it anymore. but you only have to pretend for an hour. (a couple years later i watched the tour documentary and realized he's just a curmudgeon.) i think it got better as the set progressed. then at the end, the building's fire alarms went off. the band played through it and no one left because we wanted to wring out every song possible. but at the end of that song, they said thank you and started packing up. apparently, the promoter pulled the fire alarm because it was past curfew. now, if the promoter had opened the doors at 7:30 like they'd advertised, beulah would've certainly had time to play the couple more songs they'd planned.

11 years ago on this date I was at the Treasure Island Festival in San Francisco, where I saw LCD Soundsystem, Deadmau5, Kruder and Dorfmeister, !!!, Die Antwoord and Holy Fuck. Pretty unique locale for a festival - it's on a literal island in SF Bay. Weather was sunny and cool all day. Die Antwoord hadn't put out their album yet, I thought they were fun and kind of bizarre. Deadmau5 was visually cool, but musically meh. LCD was great as always, this was after they said it was their last tour so I was grateful I got to see them one last time.
8 years ago on this date I saw Neutral Milk Hotel at the Blue Note. I didn't know what kind of a draw they would have here, so when the box office at the venue opened at noon I went down there on my lunch break. The lady there said that the show was already sold out. I was shocked but wasn't upset, I wouldn't have driven to KC or STL to see them. So after that, I head down to Shakespeare's Pizza to get some lunch. As I'm eating, I check my Facebook and the Blue Note says "NMH tickets still available online!" I try my luck, and I got one. I sat in the balcony, I thought the band sounded really good, although they played 'Ghost' in a different key and it didn't seem to have the drive that the album version did.

11 years ago on this date at the Treasure Island Festival in San Francisco I saw Belle and Sebastian, The National, She and Him, Surfer Blood, and Superchunk. It was cloudy and it rained a bit earlier in the day, but it thankfully ceased. I was excited for Superchunk, and they ripped. She and Him were good, but I didn't think Zooey's voice was strong enough for a festival audience, it's better suited for small places. I had never seen M. Ward before - he was cool. They covered 'Roll Over Beethoven' at the end, with him doing the vocals. Surfer Blood were OK, The National were excellent. Belle and Sebastian were very good, I felt like I was witnessing something rare as I didn't think they played live often. Stuart tossed children's toys to the audience.

on this day in 1993, i saw duran duran and the cranberries at lehigh university. this was a really fun show. they were probably the most high profile band i'd seen until then and they played to a crowd better than many acts i'd previously seen. my parents drove a friend and me over there and then went to a nice restaurant. my dad was very clear we had to be out of there at 11. they were just starting "wild boys" when we walked out. years later i found the whole show on youtube and realized i didn't miss much.
on this day in 2002, i saw the mooney suzuki at the 31st street pub. i'd seen them a few times and they were always pretty good, but this wasn't their best show. they didn't play long and, after seeing them before, it seemed they were just phoning it in.
on this day in 2008, i saw hercules & love affair at metro. this was like a midnight show and i was exhausted by the end of it. but they were very fun to watch and hear. my feet were sore from dancing the next morning.
on this day in 2014, i saw obn iiis, meatbodies, and hunters at the empty bottle. this show ripped. i have no recollection of hunters, but meatbodies were very good and obn iiis were a raucous time.
on this day in 2015, i saw neon indian at thalia hall. this was the same night as game 1 of the NLCS. i went to a bar in wrigleyville to watch it with a bunch of other mets fans. (i think it was a jets bar.) we were roundly booed by cubs fans for basically any display of emotion. then i biked to thalia hall and ran into one of my friends who was with a woman way out of his league. neon indian was enjoyable, but i thought the sound was pretty subpar.
on this day in 2018, i saw boy azooga, the howl & the hum, and the parrots at scala. the parrots were nothing to write home about. the howl & the hum blew me away. big riffs, synthy, great vocals, super poppy. boy azooga played a little faster and heavier than i expected, but i had no qualms with that. this was great.
