on this day in 2005, i saw assassins at sonotheque. this was the night before i started a new job. i was really excited for the job, but also still in a mode of "i must see this show." assassins didn't start until pretty late. i was actually responsible and left during their set to get a decent sleep. this was one of the better times i saw them that led me to think they would really get popular. unfortunately, that didn't happen.
on this day in 2011, i saw trentemoller at metro. i don't remember a whole lot from this, but my recollection of his shows is that they always set a mood even if they didn't connect musically for whatever reason.
on this day in 2013, i saw the men, fuzz, and purling hiss at logan square auditorium. i think i'd seen all of these bands at least once before. sound here wasn't great, but we still had a very enjoyable time. these bands were not exactly in my girlfriend's wheelhouse, but she still wanted to go and i think she liked it more than she expected.
on this day in 2018, i saw ELO at the O2 arena. i spent an inordinate amount of time that afternoon figuring out how to safely ride a bicycle from paddington to the O2. and i ended up cycling through a bunch of neighborhoods that i'd never seen before. i had a pretty good seat near the top of the lower bowl on the side of the stage. this show was a hit parade. jeff lynne didn't do much extraordinary, but the band sounded fantastic and the crowd around me were very good folks. this is the most i've ever spent on a single concert. i think it was worthwhile.

17 years ago on this date I saw R.E.M. at the Fox Theater in STL. This was the final time I would see the band, and from the times I've seen them, it would be ranked last. They were touring for Around the Sun, which most fans will tell you is the worst album they put out (myself included). So the setlist was larded up with songs from that record, and the band seemed like they were on autopilot a lot of the night. There were a few great moments - they opened with 'Begin the Begin', which I had never heard them play before, and 'Exhuming McCarthy' was a nice surprise in the middle of the set. In the middle of the encore, Michael Stipe asked who had a certain seat number. He said that was the seat he had when he saw Bruce Springsteen here in 1975. They closed with 'Man on the Moon'.
5 years ago on this date I saw Deerhunter at the Blue Note with ex-boarder Timbo. He had on a Wipers shirt, I had on a Swans shirt. It was a good show, with two moments sticking out. Aldous Harding opened, and after her set she complimented me on my Swans shirt by the bar. The second is before Deerhunter played 'Nothing Ever Happened' to end the night, Bradford said, "this one goes out to the guy we saw at the merch table with the Wipers shirt." I shot Timbo a wide-eyed "HEY HEY" look.

eight years ago on this date, i saw arcade fire at 299 meserole in brooklyn. it was the first show where they played reflektors stuff and it was like a black tie event (i wore a suit and chuck taylors).
ten years ago on this date, i saw zola jesus at le poisson rouge in manhattan. i don't remember a ton about the show other than that the crowd was absolutely silent the whenever nika was singing and she thanked us for being so respectful.

on this day in 2007, i saw digitalism at smartbar. this was a rare band performance in smartbar where they set up in the back corner by the old dj booth. logistically, it didn't make much sense and was a little awkward. since the band set up in the corner, everyone was bunched to get a view and the crowd didn't use the space too well. but i still had a fun time, from what i recall.
on this day in 2010, i saw henry clay people and the dig at the empty bottle. i liked the album that henry clay people were touring on, but i did not care for them live. it looked like some friends of theirs were right up front and the band was playing just to them. they were talking between songs and it seemed like they would put on the same show if it was just those 5 guys without the other hundred or so who were there. why would you cater just to the 5 people you know instead of a whole crowd of other potential fans?
on this day in 2015, i saw idlewild at the bottom lounge. they played a really good mix of songs and there were only a couple tunes i wanted to hear that i didn't. this is maybe the second-best time i saw them. good crowd too.
on this day in 2017, i saw the war on drugs at the aragon. this show was supposed to be at the riv and got moved. two of my friends absolutely will not go to the aragon and sold their tickets as soon as that switch was announced. i ended up finding a very cheap pair on stubhub a couple hours before the show. as usual, it didn't sound great in there. but i liked the setlist. this was also the night of game 5 of the NLCS. so many people were looking at their phones in disgust between songs.
on this day in 2018, i saw hot snakes and part chimp at oslo hackney. part chimp had two or three great songs. hot snakes had a predictably uninspired setlist, but they sounded great and i really enjoyed it. this was a pretty full show, but the band mentioned several times that they were playing two nights and apparently the next night had not sold well so "come tomorrow. and bring a friend or two." as a bonus, they were selling a UK-only record that i picked up.

Holy crap, The Dig. Now there's a name from the past I haven't thought about in ages.
Still can't believe I've missed more than one chance to see Idlewild here. No idea what I was doing in 2015 that made me miss that one.
3 years ago today I saw A Place to Bury Strangers with Kraus at the Bottle. APTBS at the Bottle is always an absolute favorite of mine, and this was no exception. Kraus were a very good opener too, very good loud shoegaze, I think they might have only been a duo too? Can't remember.
4 years ago was Algiers at the Bottle. I remember being really blown away by the singer, I did not expect him to be so great live. I think that was the first time I saw them live.

I saw Ian Noe play Sleeping Village on this day in 2019. He was very tall (not taller than clouddead) and the show was very good.

on this day in 1992, I was at a political rally at daley plaza where after speeches from jim belushi, ron brown, tipper gore, hillary clinton, al gore, and bill clinton, michael bolton sang. on this day in 1993, I saw jimmy cliff at the park west. on this day in 2000, I saw the stefon harris quartet and the mingus big band at orchestra hall. on this day in 2001, I saw roast and headliner the cult at the rave eagles club in milwaukee. on this day in 2002, I saw o.a.r. at tower in schaumburg. www.setlist.fm/setlist/oar/2002/tower-records-schaumburg-il-6bd5b282.htmlon this day in 2007, I saw lady lucille, partyline (alison wolfe of bratmobile), high places, bunny rabbit, and headliner glass candy at the av-aerie. on this day in 2012, the better half and I saw the re-united clannad at the park west. on this day in 2018, I saw native harrow, and great lakes swimmers at schubas.

on this day in 2012, i saw chad valley at schubas. i can't separate the two times i saw him at schubas, but both shows were fine.
on this day in 2016, i saw rhett miller at old town school of folk music. he was touring with someone else who i wasn't interested in seeing. so i showed up late, but rhett opened this show and was well into his set by the time i arrived. so i only saw maybe 20-25 minutes of him. i haven't listened to a new old 97s album in at least 15 years and there was a lot that i didn't recognize. either he front-loaded the set with the old songs or he just wasn't playing many. the old ones i did hear were fun, though. he was good overall, but not the best i've seen him. of course, this bill also played the next night and then apparently rhett headlined.

on this day in 1994, I saw black train jack at a tower on clark in-store. Here’s an article about who they were: trouserpress.com/reviews/black-train-jack/Their lead vocalist died of covid at the end of March this year. on this day in 1995, I saw jd crowe and the new south, laurie lewis and grant street, and the del mccoury band at the old town school. on this day in 2004, the better half and I saw digable cat (with a client of mine on keys) at cubby bear.

on this day in 2006, i saw airiel and office at metro. according to my notes, this was a free show with a few local bands who generally sounded nothing like each other. airiel was shoegaze. office was indie-rock. i don't recall the others. airiel had a moment, but i don't think they aged well. office still gets played regularly in my house. this was fun. i wish metro did more local shows these days.
on this day in 2010, i saw my morning jacket at terminal 5. they played It Still Moves in order and then an encore of some covers and an EP song or two. i went with a couple friends and had a blast, except that the guy standing directly behind me recorded a chunk of the show with his phone's flashlight on. i would be shocked if the top of my head wasn't blocking quite a bit of the frame. i've looked on youtube several times and never found the video, so hopefully his punishment's that the video was useless.
on this day in 2011, i saw obits at subterranean. they ripped through almost every song on their recent album and then played one song from the debut album to close the set. this was enjoyable.
on this day in 2012, i saw new order at the aragon. this was the first time i saw them. the sound was not great and the surrounding crowd left a lot to be desired, but i loved hearing the hits live.

9 years ago on this date I saw Portishead at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. I was visiting friends in the Bay Area, and one of their friends who I had bonded with over music last time wanted to know if I wanted her extra ticket. Sure! I was a bit shocked at having to pay $20 for parking in the garage, but I guess those were CA prices. My friend has a disability, so our seats were in the ADA section, where we had a clear, unobstructed view of the stage. The band sounded fantastic, and the visuals were mostly clips of old B&W movies. Beth Gibbons seemed to ignore the audience throughout the show until the end of the last song - 'We Carry On' - when she started dancing, and jumped off the stage to shake hands with people in the front row. Maybe she was glad it was over? We had a late dinner afterwards, it was a great night.

20 years ago on this date I saw R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Alanis Morissette, Mana, Femi Kuti, and a few others at Key Arena in Seattle. There was a UN organization called Groundwork, and they were sponsoring a series of shows they were doing at Seattle venues throughout the week. The Key Arena show was the big finale. I don't remember where I heard about it - maybe Rolling Stone? - but R.E.M. and Pearl Jam were two of my favorite bands at the time, so I thought I'd go see them together (had never been to Seattle either). Gwyneth Paltrow introduced most of the bands. Femi Kuti and Mana were pretty good. Alanis played some new songs, and skipped all the hits from Jagged Little Pill. After her set, Artis the Spoonman came out to do some spoken word. Then, Eddie Vedder came out to introduce a special guest, it was Pakistani vocalist Nida Fateh Ali Khan, the son of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (who PJ had recorded a song with). His music was very cool, I had never heard anything like it before. Pearl Jam was next and played a strong 10-song set, nothing from their first two albums but 'Given to Fly', 'Betterman' and 'Do the Evolution' were all present. R.E.M. played a good set as well, they opened with 'Losing My Religion', and closed with 'It's the End of the World' with Vedder coming out to help on the vocals (I couldn't hear him that well though). I remember I brought a disposable camera to take pictures, they all came out looking like crap, and security told me to stop. It was a great night.
14 years ago on this date I saw Ween at The Pageant in STL. This was a very good show, I was very glad they played 'Ocean Man' because that song is way better live than on record. I don't think it was sold out either, which is weird because they've somehow gotten more popular since then, and sold out the place quickly when they played it just a few years ago.

on this day in 2010, i saw my morning jacket at terminal 5. they played Z and an encore with several covers, including "careless whisper" when jim james threw bananas into the crowd. this was a very enjoyable show. we stood in almost the exact same place we had the night before.
on this day in 2013, i saw thee oh sees, obn iiis, and the blind shake at the empty bottle. this show smoked. every band sounded terrific. the crowd was super into it. this may be the best time i've seen at least two of these bands.

on this day in 1999, i saw the scofflaws and a couple other ska bands at the cooler. this was a neat little club that's now a patagonia. there was a hip hop show upstairs and this show in the basement. the bands were all fine. the two things i remember most clearly from this night are: 1) they were showing Dune on the TVs at the bar; 2) upon leaving, they wouldn't let us all pile in one cab. so my friends all got in one and then left me and one girl's boyfriend to find another and we had to wait a pretty long while to spot another.
on this day in 2010, i saw jamie lidell, big freedia, titus andronicus, and wild nothing at public assembly in the afternoon. this was a free show as part of cmj. wild nothing and titus were pretty good. i had seen lidell a couple weeks earlier and really liked the show, so i encouraged my friends to stick around after titus. i go to a lot of shows with these friends and we have seen some not great acts, but i can't think of one that they disliked more than big freedia. and then lidell was really entertaining, but it was almost the exact same set i saw before. in the evening, i went to cakeshop to see barreracudas and gentleman jesse. i did not realize it was actually a storefront that sold cakes with a venue in the basement. both bands were really good.
