When artists bring fans on stage, do they really run the risk of someone trolling them (ie not being able to play guitar or know the lyrics) or are they plants? Honest question.

Honest question. this is such a great question that i have also wondered many times. some have to be plants. but at big festivals if someone's up front and they say they can do it, i think a band is likely to believe them. although, i'm fascinated by the idea of someone spending like 8 hours on the railing to troll some band not knowing any lyrics and then being viciously booed by tens of thousands of people.

I guess absence really does make the heart grow fonder. After missing the last 2 Lollas, coming back provided some much needed constancy and joy in an otherwise tumultuous few years.
Plus...Dua Lipa!

Hey, you know what? I've come to kind of love the teens that go to this festival. I love their joy. Maybe becoming a parent has changed me, I don't know, but as far as I'm concerned the kids are all right. This is where I'm at too. The last 2.5 years have been brutal for young people so I was so happy to see so many having a great time.

I've always assumed they're just normal fans, though my experience is limited. The last time I saw U2 (in 2005), they brought someone up on stage to help with 'Yahweh', and he made mistakes.

Watching the stream it was obvious that the fan who played guitar with Green Day could play chords but could not follow along with the song and perhaps hadn’t played with a band before. They turned down the volume pretty quick. Not a criticism, just an observation.
Even someone with experience could easily go blank in the moment when you’re on stage with a band you love, bright lights shining on you, and tens of thousands of fans watching your every move.

I think Dua Lipa was just sound checking covering "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard for a bit Old info, I know...but I was on Lower Hutch when this was happening. Dua was NOT on stage. It was more of a rehearsal for her dancers. However, JHope was on stage for his sound check with full band.

Actually amazing they couldn’t think this one thru all the way I know this may come off as an unpopular opinion, but I was involved on the inside with the planning, so I will toss out a few comments. Planning on Saturday was minimal, and we got caught unprepared by the kids in line crazy early at the main gate for TxT. I can give more details when I have time to type it up, but we did that on the fly and IMO we didn't do too much damage, but should have been prepared for a much larger crowd at crazy early hours on Saturday. After we went through that, the Sunday planning ramped up big time. There always was a plan, but it went into overdrive and was heavily modified/fortified. The festival was eventually prepared to handle *40,000* early arrivals (imagine almost HALF the festival standing on Monroe Street at 8AM....that's what we were planning for), but that didn't materialize. I'd guess there were probably 3k worth of kids there 8AM-ish, so the planning was overkill, but seemed to work seamlessly. Also, MAJOR props to the "army" or whatever they're calling themselves. While I was yelled at by a couple of random unhappy kids, the mass of people was unbelievably patient and courteous. Again...more stories from inside that crowd later. Once inside the park, the JHope fans filled the area back to about the sound booth, BUT unlike other crowds, they were not densely packed. I was easily able to walk and even ride my bike through the kids that were waiting around. By the time Charli took the stage, the North was packed and all the space I saw early in the day (even with the campers) was gone. I was also able to see Green Day (until they did the stupid kid on the stage shit, which I was tired of seeing 20 years ago) and bike down to JHope (where I stayed until 9:55) and I would say the crowds were damn near 50/50, with JHope seeming more crowded only because of the smaller footprint. Anyway, more from BOH when I have a chance. AMA, and if I can answer it without getting in trouble, I'm happy to do it.

I was mostly on the South Field on Sunday but my only issues with J Hope fans during Charli was they sat everywhere. Like in the front of the bars, blocking walkways and even close to the main stage. Some of them didn't really seem to get festival etiquette. I was happy to go back South after Charli.

Did Lolla sell a significant amount of tickets after J-Hope and txt were added? Or did a lot of people buy secondary tickets? Or there just happened to be a lot of the "army" already going to the fest?
I'm just a bit fascinated by this since they were both late adds

I'm just a bit fascinated by this since they were both late adds Maybe c1916 can provide further details, but I'm sure they had a huge bump after those two were announced. Saturday pretty much always sells out just because Saturday. Sunday finally sold out around the day of. One of my volunteer spots Saturday was at the will call, I can tell you there were A LOT of scalped/fake wristbands that day. Glad that the scalpers were selling those directly in front of the will call with a huge sign saying "NO SCALPING" and a bunch of cops regularly walking by there.

First Lolla in 5 years for me was the absolute best of times. But I wouldn’t go at all if it wasn’t for you guys. Even those that weren’t there this year; all part of the continuity. You’re all a beautiful stochastic mass of love, and it’s been fantastic to hang out again. I’ll stop before I get (more) emotional.

I’ve got a question. Can you get them to book Kate Bush? I don't believe that she ever played any shows in the western hemisphere. we'll get abba, who actually toured the US back in the day, before we get her to cross the pond.

It was great seeing everybody this past weekend. Lots of fun was had and a decent amount of good music was seen. The awful Saturday and Sunday line-ups made for the perfect excuse to check out all the new 21+ lounges and check out the free swag since there wasn't much worth watching. Mrs. Fivehole and sidekick Fivehole also managed to get three rock n recycle shirts on Sunday which was nice.
I counted today and I've been to 54 days of Chicago-palooza (every day minus 2005). Pretty crazy.

I have often wondered this as well. I think in some cases they have crew who ID these folks in advance (since they're usually the ones camping there most of the day), and possibly give them a little test backstage prior to the set -- but I don't actually know that. I ran into a kid who drummed for The Killers (at Firefly) at the Wawa right after the show. He said he was holding up a sign the whole show and Brandon Flowers made eye contact and nodded at him early on in the set, before calling him up later -- but he had no idea it was going to happen beforehand. I have also seen rap shows where the guys they pull up kinda botch it and even at Green Day Billie seemed to be in the girl's ears leading her through the lyrics, so I don't think it's always super prepped.

www.chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/ct-fake-lolla-mass-shooting-charges-20220803-cldh4t3qfvfyzij6t375jk7cyu-story.htmlAn 18-year-old security guard remains behind bars after allegedly faking a mass shooting alert at Lollapalooza so she could leave work early, prosecutors say. It was shortly before 3 p.m. Friday when Janya B. Williams sent a message via her TextNow number to a witness’ cellphone which read: “Mass shooting at 4pm location Lollapalooza. We have150 targets,” according to prosecutors during Williams’ bond hearing Sunday. The witness immediately told her supervisors, setting off a chain of alerts to Chicago police and FBI Joint Counterterrorism Task Force. When the witness, who was a staffer supervising a security team, went back to her post about 4:15 p.m., Williams told the witness her sister told her she saw a post about a mass shooting threat on Facebook, prosecutors said. After the witness told Williams to send a screen shot of the Facebook threat, Williams allegedly created a bogus Facebook page under the name “Ben Scott,” wrote a post that said, “Massive shooting at Lollapalooza Grant Park 6 p.m.,” and snapped a screen shot of it, sending it to the witness’ cell, prosecutors said. That was when the witness sent that screen shot to her supervisor, but investigators soon learned the Apple iCloud account and IP address of the TextNow number, both of which belonged to Williams, prosecutors said. When Williams was found and brought to the police command center for questioning, she told police she sent the message and created the fake post “because she wanted to leave work early,” prosecutors said. Williams, of the city’s Lawndale neighborhood, was charged with making a false terrorism threat, which is a felony and on Sunday, Cook County Judge Mary Marubio ordered her held in lieu of $50,000 bail. Williams, who remained in custody as of Wednesday afternoon, is due back in court on Monday.

i don't understand anything about that. how exactly do you believe a threat gets a security guard out of work? isn't it precisely the thing that security is supposed to be involved in?
also, what happened to just walking off the job like a normal person?
