Have you heard a cool cover lately? Did the opening band at a show absolutely butcher a classic? What's that song you've just discovered is actually a cover? Let's talk about it.

I still say this is one of the best cases of a cover being better than the original

Get lost in this for the next 10 minutes. I've heard a lot of bad covers of this song (come on down, Greta Van Fleet!) - but this one stands shoulder to shoulder with the original.

Get lost in this for the next 10 minutes. I've heard a lot of bad covers of this song (come on down, Greta Van Fleet!) - but this one stands shoulder to shoulder with the original. this is a great cover. unfortunate that this band had such bad vibes. the singer had addiction and weight issues, and had a heart attack and died while recording the album. since curtis mayfield only wanted to sign the singer, session musicians finished off the album and the band members didn't get royalties. the drummer for the original band dropped out of school to tour, lost his exempt status by being out of school, and got drafted for vietnam when he returned from touring. when he returned from vietnam, he couldn't drum anymore and killed himself. but the album is terrific. i think one of my coworkers saw them at the aragon.

I was shocked to learn there is a Greta Van Fleet cover of that song. They should go to jail. The Jim James / R Kelly version from the 2013 Superjam was great

For a while it seemed like I was getting this cover every time I saw them. I think I've seen it at least 3 times.

One of my favorites. I think it's better than the original. this is great. it reminds me of a lot of dwight yoakam's covers where he just rips apart the arrangement and then puts it back together in a neat way.

i've been reading Anatomy of a Song. i didn't know this was a cover. but i loved the story behind it. songwriter calls up his old friend lee majors. but lee's not there and he talks with farrah fawcett who says she can't talk long because she's packing for the midnight plane to houston to see her parents. he gets "midnight plane to houston" stuck in his head and writes the song for an album he's reluctant to make. he's really only making it because he wants to be a songwriter and his agent says an album will be the best way to get his songs out there.
cissy houston hears the album and wants to record two songs. but she wants to rework "midnight plane" because her family had never taken a plane trip and she doesn't know anyone in houston. he lets her rewrite it. it gets in the charts. then gladys knight hears it and wants some rewrites too. and she hates improvising, so her brother feeds her the spoken word parts at the end. and it blows up.

it took my girlfriend through the chorus to pick up on this one once when it was on. "why does this sound so familiar... ?"

i did a radio show for an npr affiliate right after college. i played this one afternoon and the program director ran into the studio asking "who's doing this cover?" he loved it.

Liz backed by Material Issue. Love that the guitar line is so reminiscent of "What Girls Want" Sadly, right before Jim Ellison committed suicide.
