*small voice* I bought a full price ticket I’ve learned in my short time here to never pay full price for a Chicago Festival

by dij's logic, no show is worth it because people here go via jukely or win tickets.
also, trying to win tickets or get a pass below face value is not something that started this year because the lineup is less popular or something. people have been getting under face tickets for years.

I don't think they're spending less or anything, but their budget looks to be the same even though ticket prices have increased 50% in four years. I'm sorry that you're very upset that the fest has increased it's price to be more in line with fests of it's size. It does suck! I was curious about this, so I looked up Forecastle's price history for a comparison. Forecastle single-days cost $79.50 in 2014, and they've actually gone down to $69.50 in 2018 (compared to the $50 to $75 jump with Pitchfork). Here are the two lineup posters from 2014 (spoiler tag cuz huge): Here are the two posters from 2018 (spoiler tag again cuz huge): Forecastle is charging $69.50 for a single day of what is unquestionably a bigger festival than Pitchfork, who is charging $75 for a single day.

by dij's logic, no show is worth it because people here go via jukely or win tickets. Car Seat Headrest just sold out the Vic very easily at $25 a ticket. Broken Social Scene charged $35 for their show at the Vic and did not sell out. The BSS show was too expensive!

It's almost as if the production costs of a festival in Louisville and Chicago are different

Looks like Sunday is $69.50 and Friday/Saturday sold out of the first tier of tickets.

also interesting that forecastle has unquestionably scaled it's festival down over the years while pitchfork has scaled its festival up. go figure.

Fun Fact: Because my vacation week was originally scheduled to be July 15-21 and I'd never been to Louisville, I made a plan to go to Forecastle and Pitchfork back to back weekends. Even had tickets to both. So, I'm very familiar with this year's Forecastle lineup. However, a thing changed at work and I had to move my vacation week and could no longer go out of town that first weekend. Wound up possessing two Forecastle 3 day passes that I bought at their cheapest price ($165 after fees). Listed them on Stubhub. 3 months later I finally sold them at a $60 loss for the pair.
Forecastle is more expensive than Pitchfork, has gotten smaller since 2014 and is in a much less competitive festival area. And they're still basically in the same position as Pitchfork

please keep moving the goal posts once your points get disproven Sorry for the confusion. My points were: a.) Melkbelly is a super lazy aftershow booking b.) which is an extension of P4K becoming a lazily booked and increasingly generic festival c.) which has also become increasingly expensive. d.) One can argue it is in fact too expensive because out of 100 Chicago-based music nerds, approximaty 0 feel the need to buy a full price ticket. I paid for an early bird ticket and still plan to travel for the festival. The lineup made me debate whether or not to a little bit, but I figure that festivals are usually fun regardless of lineup, and I like a lot of the acts on it, and, not being a Chicago person, I've never seen the Chicago acts booked at the lower end of the lineup. At any rate, I hope to see a bunch of you there, or in other places throughout the weekend (because that's what makes these things fun, most of all)

I understand what dij is saying, and agree with some of his points.
However, I don't think that the fest was lazily booked this year. I think they were intentionally trying to book acts that fit a vision to have more acts featuring women and people of color. That feature they ran that compared the genders of the bands playing festivals makes me think this. Perhaps it was more difficult than they thought, so they might have taken some easy bookings to fill in the rest of the festival.
Maybe there were not enough female acts to fill the top tier, so they filled it with "alt rock" acts (FF and Tame Impala) to appeal to the XRT crowd and bring some dads (not me) in. Or maybe that was the plan all along. Not a fan of FF in 2018, but even though I do not really like Tame Impala, I don't think they are a bad or lazy booking.

Also of note, Essentially Geared Wine Co. is the wine sponsor this year, so hopefully that means we get cans of wine.

I actually kinda like that OkCupid is doing a thing for singles. If you're both at Pitchfork at least you have one thing in common, and I can imagine a first date at a music festival would be perfect.
