I was a little nervous about Neko Case tonight since reviews were middling to bad of her shows last summer. Happy to report that she was absolutely phenomenal tonight. She seemed really into it, was having a great time with her band, and they notably added some slide guitar and banjo to a few of the more recent songs that shifted them to her Americana sound vs rock sound. Still some rockier elements and her earlier material is definitely her strongest but I was pleasantly surprised by the new arrangements.
Other notes: I absolutely love how her voice can fill any space. It’s so rich and I’m such a fan. Hold On, Hold On is still one of the best songs written in the past 20 years. Her strict no phone policy is really great and makes for a much more engaging evening.

I'm gonna get a little whiny here so this probably fits better in I Don't Care, but whatever
I was supposed to get treated to The 1975 at Red Rocks courtesy of some work connections. Some wires got crossed (and I did a bad job of following up) and I ended up with a round-trip flight, hotel room, rental car, and a friend from Chicago 100% committed to the trip - all our own expenses - and my connection on the tickets fell through.
So, obviously irritated, but seeing as how it was the only missing piece at that point, we buckled down and bought tix on the secondary market to still be able to see the show.
Land in Denver. Right after I swipe my card for the rental car and we walk out to the lot, my email goes off. They cancelled the show - the only place we needed to take the car to.
I didn't even want to give that much of a shit about the cancellation, but basically at that point I'd had it. We went and got extremely day-drunk and ended up at the Pepsi Center for the Avs playoff game.
I do realize that it is extremely silly to get upset over The 1975 but I have never had to try so hard, so consistently, to have fun on a trip I basically planned.

Hey good for you for making the best of it. Day drinking and playoff hockey sounds like a pretty good day.

Missing the 1975/watching playoff hockey live is a huge win/win in my book

We had a few rounds at Wynkoop Brewery, and actually returned Wednesday to shoot some pool there in the afternoon.
Same bartender was there, and she told us we were the only out-of-towners in the bar that weren't crying at some point on Tuesday.

Adding to the chorus: Rosalia was spectacular at Coachella.
Last night I saw Hot Chip, who were tight as ever. Hopefully they keep doing Hungry Child -> Boy From School, because it was an absolute delight.

It's extremely faithful and straight-ahead. Which, like, fun. But I would have hoped for a more Hot Chip interpretation.

If you're ever tempted to test that out, you know the spot to visit.

Cherry Glazerr was better than I expected, the Aragon was worse than I remembered it, and Chvrches was dogshit.

I enjoyed Cherry Glazerr's set. And I also enjoyed Chvrches set way more than I was expecting to in 2019. I hadn't seen them for a long time and their audience has...definitely changed during that period. Thanks again to nanatod for the ticket!

swung over to Subt to catch Wretch (formally Gates of Slumber) and they were great. played some new stuff to so hopefully new lp soon.
better turnout than their last show at livewire which was like 5 people. but also they had some local high school opener which had its own fanbase who were pretty obnoxious throughout the entire night. at least they probably paid for the show but they also spent all of Wretch's set gossiping -- at the front, which i thought was odd.

Let me tell you something about Turnstile it’s fucking LIT
Left three songs into Turnover I couldn’t vibe with that soft shit after getting my face kicked off
Reptaliens opened and were really good! One of the better opening bands I knew nothing about that I’ve seen lately.

Interpol was very Interpol last night! I had not seen them play either PDA or NYC before and both were a treat. We left early and made quesadillas which was an even bigger treat!

I need to start rating bands in relation to how I would feel about getting tamales, this is a good system.

Patti Smith was AMAZING last night at Webster Hall. Easily the best concert I’ve seen in 2019 - she’s still at the top of her game and kept the audience rapt the whole night. Played from around her discography plus a number of covers (Hendrix tribute ruled, as did her take on “After The Gold Rush”). Lenny even got to do a few songs on lead vocals, including a fucking rad cover of Avengers’ “The American In Me.”
Two main highlights, first - “Gloria” live was everything. That’s going on the short list of favorite live moments ever. Whole crowd was jumping around and losing their shit - plus, like, that’s basically the best song ever. Second, MICHAEL STIPE was a surprise opener! I guess he opened the night before too, but I’d missed that news. Pretty sure I audibly squealed when he walked onstage. Was completely surreal to hear his voice in person. REM is an all-time favorite, and they broke up the year before I started going to concerts regularly. Wasn’t sure I’d ever get to see Michael live, given how generally out of the spotlight he’s been. So that was lovely - and the rest of the night followed suit.

He hits up every bar that doesn't sell food, pretty much every night (it's actually a network of several guys, but they are collectively known as "the tamale guy"). He's like Santa, but with tamales.

Can someone tell the network that my house is a bar that doesn't sell food?

I think the last time I got tamales from the tamale guy was at Green Eye sometime last fall. It's always glorious.
Cheese/green chile.

It's bugging me that I can't remember what bar I always saw him in - tamale guy is the reason I carry cash. Thank you, tamale guy.
