Did you see a show?
How was it?
Did you have to go to the Riv?
Did they play that song?

the huge upside to seeing shows at the rave is that they serve new glarus beer
the huge downside is that its $9 a bottle

Spotted Cow was the talk of the town at Tank's wedding two weeks ago in Lake Geneva.
I'm gonna go ahead and say, overrated.

Yeah definitely overrated if it's coming at you as "the talk of the town" but when its the same price as most of the domestic/low-end craft selections at a store in WI, why not drink it?
We try to bring some home any time we're up there

opeth were good and played lots of old stuff which was nice
gojira was fucking incredible.
stayed at bars down the street during devin townsend because ew.
vic also never seems to fully sell out (or they underestimate capacity) so we got a good rail spot on the back ledge so we could see everything and have easy bar access. good times.

I went to Jazzfest for the first time last weekend and that festival is absolutely lovely. Highly recommend it for anyone interested. So many fun sets from a bunch of local bands I'd never heard & some heavy hitters. Only problem is that my liver, stomach, and mental clock all still hates me.

Caught the Jesus and Mary Chain on Tuesday night. Just got back from St. Paul last night.
Didn't catch the openers, but this was the second time seeing JAMC (first time was almost exactly 2 years ago) and it was fantastic as expected. For those of you who didn't care for the new album, it sounded great live. Songs like All Things Pass were given the Psychocandy treatment and featured fuzzed out bliss. The Chain were never great lyricists, they just wrote good pop and layered it with distortion and fuzz. It was a night of all of their hits, and when Reverence came up to close out the main set, the fire alarm went off. Curtains came down, and the JAMC stopped playing. Couldn't see them, but I'm guessing they left the stage. 15 minutes passed, they came back out, replayed Reverence and began their first encore which featured Just Like Honey. They closed with I Hate Rock N Roll.
Highlights:
Some Candy Talking Just Like Honey All Things Pass Reverence twice

Saw Father John Misty last night.
I haven't listened to Pure Comedy much but I was very impressed by the new songs live. especially the songs in the back half of the album which I maybe listened to twice before yesterday. The 10+ person backing band drowned out Josh's voice for the first couple songs until they finally turned up the mic.
Since it was a seated venue (Which, I must say, Kings Theatre is a beautiful venue) the crowd remained in their seats until the first non-Pure Comedy song where Josh motioned for everyone to get up. Interestingly, he also motioned for everyone to sit down the next time he played a string of Pure Comedy songs in the encore.
So overall, it was a great show but not my favorite by him because the Honeybear tour shows were just so much fun. I was not a fan of the tamer Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings.
Favorite Songs: So I'm Growing Old on Magic Mountain, Holy Shit, Strange Encounter Wish he'd played: Ideal Husband, Only Son of a Ladiesman

I loved it. I liked that instead of spilling out into the street there was a nice plaza area for us to stand in that wasn't inconvenient. I was surprised tho that it took us 30 minutes to find a place that sold alcohol after 10 pm. St. Paul overall was not my favorite vacation spot, but the Palace theater was bomb.

Shining was pretty tame compared to what i expected but sounded cool Revenge sounded great but had a super uninterested (and annoyingly vocal crowd) Wolvhammer were fucking amazing. got to hang with the vocalist for a while afterwards and go figure he's a massive wrestling fan

Sorority Noise were pretty good last night. We got a lot of stuff that from before the new album, which was a bummer for me. The kids seemed to love it, though. The new album tracks ripped. Mookie and I were talking and we both thought it pretty likely that they end up on the second wave of Riot Fest bands.
Also s/o only having to see one band being home by like 9:40.

Yeah, Sorority Noise was alright, I appreciated that the plowed through the whole set and barely stopped to tune or anything. And I appreciated the Manchester Orchestra song snippet they added. Oh, and if anyone out there has ever thought that Dashboard Confessional was just too hardcore, try Mat Kerekes!! (yeah, that was bad, we sat at the bar and watched basketball during his set)

So I've been to a few things in the past week. On Sunday I saw Deerhunter play a tiny venue in my small town. It was awesome. I've only seen them one other time, a festival set, and thought it was just ok. But this one was really really good and one of the better shows I've seen in a while. Setlist, while a bit short, was super tight and didn't have any low points. The band seemed to really enjoy playing there. They messed up trying to play "Game of Diamonds" which they hadn't played in a super long time and it led to a pretty great Bradford rant about politics and random things while they were trying to get it together. The encore in general was pretty great. Rainwater Cassette Exchange is genuinely a great opener. All around great. Setlist- www.setlist.fm/setlist/deerhunter/2017/the-gig-beaumont-tx-2be7a862.htmlSaw Mitski on Tuesday. We found out it was just a solo acoustic show. But that worked incredibly well honestly, I don't know a good way to put this but she had kind of a big sound for a solo act. Her voice was so good. Unfortunately it was stupid short. Like, it was a 40 minute set. A really really good 40 minutes, but bit of a letdown that it ended so fast. Saw Hamilton Leithauser last night. Man he sounded so good. Again another somewhat short set, I believe he played about 70 minutes, but I left feeling satisfied at least. His voice is so good live. I'm kind of half hoping he's doing a Pitchfork aftershow with someone cool now since I won't be there to see him on the Sunday of the fest. Walker Lukens opened and I have a feeling he might be about to get pretty big, he's got the sound for it. I enjoyed his set.

Surprised they are still touring behind Fading Frontier.

So Real Estate last night was awesome despite the Vic's sound quality and the WXRT crowd (seriously they are the worst). Frankie Cosmos sounded fantastic and played for almost an hour since she was the only opener. I got there 15 minutes before the show started and the pit was completely packed -- kind of thought people wouldn't show up til 9ish.

Night 1 of 2 for Ty Segall was great. He opened with "Break A Guitar" and from there it was non-stop moshing til he played some slow love song from the new album midway through. After the show, I picked up a Metro-made silk-screen Ty Segall poster which I haven't seen Metro do in a long time. Looking forward to Thalia Hall tonight!!!
PS I'm super sore and bruised everywhere but no regrets being in the pit *thumbs up jpg*

so saturday, Mastodon might've sounded the tightest out of any of the times i've seen them and they played a stupid long set. EoDM were fun as hell and did a great bowie cover. Russian Circles did their best stuff and sounded great.
and then i saw Every Time I Die at bottom lounge last night and it was neat cause it was an all ages show and was done promptly at 9 pm. but also they were really good and played pretty much everything i wanted to hear.

Yeah Mastodon is on point right now. I feel like Brent must have gotten sober? I was shocked that A) he played the first song with EODM (and ripped), B) was on point for the whole of their show and C) bantered with the crowd multiple times which I'm not sure I've seen.
I think their production is just too exact at this point to allow them to be sloppy at all. The lighting rig was pretty awesome the whole time.
