Set reviews from saturday:
Jade Bird: Very good! V charming in the not easy spot of having to open solo before two co-headliner sets and clearly had the audience engaged. I do wander if she'll have a band during her festival run later this summer as I missed her at Schubas and I don't know what the set up is.
Father John Misty: As good as I've seen FJM, sick light show and the band is tight as hell. Still not a huge fan of all of his music but works kind of perfect as an almost opener
Jisbell : Best J-Bell set in a minute. Band was on fire and the shortened set time meant him and the band were really going for it. 2 truckers and 2 here we rest songs were a v good touch as well.

The VW show was a definite show of the summer contender. there were a few stretches that were just absolutely all time.
They are so significantly better as a live band than the Rostam era an extremely funny comment

Probably a dumb question: I've never been to a Northerly Island show before, but going to see the Beck/CtE/Spoon show. Will it be chilly on 7-31?

Yea this was weird even for June. Would be fairly unprecedented for late July. But....you know....

Joe Bob Briggs and the Cinapocalypse festival in general was a hoot. really great atmosphere from the music box folks. three floyds takeover was delightful. child's play pop up bar was as silly as imagined. Joe Bob and Darcy were the nicest folks ever and his show (How the Rednecks Saved Hollywood) was hysterical.
great night

The crowd was awful at the Julien Baker show last night. HoV is not a good venue for a quiet act like her, unfortunately. People were talking very loudly during her set, we had to move and got closer to the entrance and it was much better over there. But man that was bad. She was good anyways, Wye Oak was pretty good as usual too, we got a brand new song they had never played before. Sounded like typical Wye Oak, but actually rocked a bit more towards the end.
Went to see Boulevards at the Bottle afterwards, since they were really fun opening for Rhye last year. Unfortunately that was not the case last night. It was only the singer guy, a guitarist and a drummer, and I don't think they had practiced or performed together much. Very clumsy and didn't really do much at all, came off sounding like band at a street fest unfortunately.

Long Hots were pretty great opening for David Nance Group the other night. Tons of energy and attitude. David Nance was, as always, bigger than the room and the set is never long enough.

Bad Books (Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine) at the Metro last night were fucking fantastic. Andy never really speaks much during MO shows but he was pretty chatty last night and the interaction with Kevin Devine was great. Musically they were right on point even with this being the first night of the tour. The only bad was that the music is pretty mellow so the Metro wasn't the best setting. The crowd at times got a bit out of hand yelling at them and during the very quiet parts you could hear some clearly very loud and over-served people from the lobby.

That said I truly did not get that set. Atmospherically pleasant but every song follows the exact same structure that isn't all that interesting the first time. I guess repitition works for like experimental music but its absolutely brutal for solo folk rock. Wye Oak were great though as usual.

The Dio Returns show was actually pretty cool. There were 3 original members. Two guest singers that sounded a lot like Dio. The music sounded really good.
The stage visuals/effects were great.
Now...the hologram. It was a bit disappointing because "Dio" only 'sang' 1 out of every 3 songs. It mostly looked like Dio singing the songs as a weird simple video image projected onto the back wall. He was lifesize, I guess. He moved around in his box/frame.
The opening band was Jizzy Pearl's Love/Hate. Apparently the were celebrating the 30th anniversary of one of their albums. Everybody seemed to know all of their lyrics and loved them. Never heard of them. They were just okay, but their fans were going apeshit over them. IDGI.
Overall, it was still fun and a must-see for full-fledged Dio fans.

The worst part about the Stones show was that it took me nearly 2 hours to get from essentially the Allstate Arena to the Waldron parking deck and another hour to get home to Lincoln Square after the show. Musically they were on point and I've got no complaints about the set-list although it would have been nice to hear When the Whip Comes Down instead of You Got Me Rocking but when you give the masses a vote the results are hardly surprising. The stage itself was kind of plain and other than being huge. It also seemed low to the ground. But now I'm just picking nits.

I really liked the bare staging. I do wonder if it was lower to the ground so they could incorporate that rain cover

My first Stones show was yesterday. It was great! Seriously, these guys still rock at their age and it was pretty incredible to witness. Will say, I thought the mixing was horrible. Maybe that's just how Soldier Field is? Saw GnR there a few years ago and don't remember it being horrible? Would have liked to have heard some other classics ("Ruby Tuesday, Beast of Burden, Under my Thumb, Only Rock n Roll, etc), but definitely not complaining! How do their setlists differ from show to show? Do they stick to basically the same thing or it's completely different?

What did you think was bad about the mixing? The guitars were definitely incredibly high in the mix but that was 100% on purpose

The guitars and I thought the vocals at times were a bit high too. It seemed fine the last hour or so, but that first half of the show I thought really needed some fixes. I was in 239 so maybe it sounded different depending on where you were?

yeah we snuck in way up close so that makes sense. Keef was truly playing whatever he felt like and his guitar was extremely high in the mix so it definitely made some of the earlier songs before he got in the groove all over the place but I thought that was a positive not a negative. Felt like a live show vs. a broadway musical

The AA Bondy show was a little disappointing tonight. On this tour, all of the tracks are prerecorded, and he sings over them and does a little piano/synth playing otherwise. Only about 12 songs, almost all but about 3 from the new album.
There was no opener, so he wasn't even on for an hour, and he was done.

Last night's show at Sleeping Village was excellent, a rare 3/3 lineup. Wand was really great, thankfully (for me) their main set was basically their entire new album, I think they might have had only one older song in there. They did 2 older ones for the encore after that. Sounds was really great in the venue, band was really sharp too.
The second band Dreamdecay was really great too, never heard of them before last night. Sounds like they had some problem during the tour, I assume all of their equipment got stolen, since they were performing with Wand's equipment. But they ripped, the rare drummer/lead singer thing too.
Even the local opener with the worst band name in the world, Wet Piss, were really great too.

helms alee ruled last night.
earth was good but pretty much just played the whole new album, which the crowd was pretty lukewarm on, then cut their second half of old songs short for some reason so it was an abrupt stop. also dylan retunes his guitar in between every song and it takes a good 3-4 minutes so there was a LOT of awkward silence throughout the evening
